Section 8
« on: October 08, 2009, 02:49:43 PM »
I've got this game for my birthday and it's great fun though very chaotic. You can spawn anywhere (but flak kills you if you aren't properly equipped and drop too close to it), move anywhere quickly once your speedbooster is on, buy stuff anywhere, have a mission pop up anywhere, etc. The PC version is really the way to go though, the game may have a lock on that keeps your weapon pointed at the enemy but it's only good for a few seconds and takes a long time to recharge, it's enough to let any noob have some effect in a battle but not so much that it does all the fighting for you. I played the demo on the 360 and dual analogs just don't really do the job, it's much easier to play on the PC.

I only played in random matches so far though so I'm still looking for people to play in a proper team with. It's quite apparent that the game is intended to be all about teams, single people have almost no chance at completing the missions (events that appear and can be done for victory points) but in a group many of the tasks become easier than you'd think. There's still fun to be had just running around and doing whatever you feel like, you still contribute to the team and if it's just by adding victory points by killing stuff or feat points that trigger those missions. Or maybe just tearing down the defenses of an enemy position and inviting your whole team in for a party. An interesting side effect of the slower pace and lock on and whatnot is that lag is much less of an issue than in twitch FPSes.

Has an analog stick ever done justice to the controls in a shooter? Too bad I can't seem to find a demo for the PC. That's a pretty pathetic oversight.

There isn't a PC demo, apparently there was an open beta in the past that acted as a "demo" for people but I didn't see any of that. The system requirements are fairly low though.

Section 8 is more mediocre than Halo, and is on the lower end of both the "awesome" and "fun" spectrum. All the guns are peashooters and everybody has too much goddamn health. The netcode is sh!t which is pretty much proven by the fact that they felt it was necessary to add a lock-on feature, which is practically the only way to actually hit anybody. It seems like it wanted to combine Tribes and Halo, and just managed to screw both of them up royally0

Too bad I can't seem to find a demo for the PC. That's a pretty pathetic oversight.

I don't think it's an oversight. Pretty much everybody that played the beta on PC thought it was crap.

Meh, in regular combat you don't need lock-on, only if the dude you're shooting at suddenly decides he wants to jump over you. Well, on the PC that is, on the console you may actually need the lock-on even in straight battles because analog aim is ****. I don't know what your problem with the netcode is but I can easily snipe even at >100ms ping.

I think overall the lower damage and lock-on are there to deemphasize twitch skills and make it more about tactics, people who complain about the damage tend to complain about not being able to pull any hero tricks either (e.g. getting the jump on a squad and wiping them all out). Overall I think it's almost more like an RTS where everybody is a unit than an FPS, the actual combat is more about the range you engage on and the equipment you bring than your actual ability to line up the gun. Maybe I just don't mind it as much because the two previous shooty games I played were about heavy mechs (Gundam and Armored Core, respectively) and it took significantly more damage to destroy one of those than a player in Section 8.

One bit of confusion that tends to arise is when people don't know that guns penetrate shields if you are close enough (distance depends on the weapon). If you have to slowly work your way through the enemy shields first it seems much weaker than it can be if you engage at the proper range.

Bumping this because the game is apparently out on PSN. I guess most people have already decided that they hate it but maybe they're willing to give it a chance...

I think it's also available on Xbox 360 Games on Demand. If there's a demo I'll give it a shot.

I was going to check this out as a demo, but it wasn't available on PSN. $30 sight unseen? nope.

There's no demo anymore because the game is garbage, which they realized quickly after release.
