If you go by the generations, "THE" consoles to own were the NES, SNES (some may argue this and that would be foolish), the PS1, the PS2. Those were the consoles of choose, the market leaders. If you had to choose a console, that was what you were supposed to choice.
I absolutely could NOT disagree with this more.
You normally do. :P
Since when have I ever agreed with that statement?

Just because a system sells the most doesn't mean it has the best games for everyone.
I believe that if one can get only one system then they should do some research and see which one offers the most games which appeal to them. In my case, despite the huge library of games for the PlayStation, there are far more games on the Nintendo 64 which I like. Same for PS2 vs. GameCube.

In the case of SNES vs. Genesis, if I went by your logic of sales = best, then it would depend on which region you live in. In Europe and Australia, the Genesis (known there as the Mega Drive) sold far better than the Super NES did, which would make it "THE" system to own.

The PS3 went from being easily the least appealing console to me to the most in the last few years.  Originally it seemed all the good games were also available on the Xbox 360 but now I would say that it has the exclusives that interest me more.  What was holding me back was the price.  It was just too much money.  Now it's affordable, so I'll get it.

The Wii is not cutting it for me, plain and simple.  There are games on the horizon I'm looking forward to but they're too infrequent.  The third party support is crap and is not going to change.  Nintendo's first party releases are now split between the new market and the old so from my perspective their output is decreased.  And realistically I just don't seem to be a priority to them.  They don't care if I'm satisfied or not.  They're making money hand over fist so they're not going to change anything.  I feel like they're taking my support for granted.  But I'll still have my Wii and will buy the titles that do interest me.  Next gen is up in the air though.  Right now I'd say they've lost me for next gen if they maintain the status quo.

The question for me now is what PS3 game will I get first?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I was on edge of becoming a lapsed gamer until Wii came along to be honest. By the end of the GC era life got in the way of gaming and the few times I went back, it felt like the magic wasn't there anymore. It wasnt like being a kid and rushing home after school on friday night knowing you were gonna sit in front of the NES and beat the **** outta SMB3.. ya know?

All of a sudden the promise of Wii had me excited once more, the magic was back. Sure some of that promise hasn't been delivered, YET, but i'm still hopeful. Even the DS got me excited, though as i mentioned I've never been much of a portable gamer. The games i do have for that system I love, and just hearing about unique games on the platform make me happy as a gamer, because imagination is still alive and well in developers.

Basically, the Wii is helping fight the war against stagnant gaming and despite its flaws i'm thankfull for it as non-elitist gamer. Yes, I said THANKFULL. Before 2006 people started acting like a video game wasn't worth **** if it wasn't a GTA clone, that was the first wave of attack. Then FPS games littered with bald space marines came in for the second wave, followed by the onslaught of hi-res graphics... I felt like I was watching gaming die.. my favorite hobby, and also a passion, was whithering away like a wilted flower.. almost lifeless... slowly turning brown.

and as Pro would say, the tides of the blue ocean washed away the old crops, making the land fertile again for the seeds of change to be sewn.

That basically describes me as well: I was prepared to never own another console since I had grown so bored with gaming.
