Telltale says iPhone is more powerful than the Wii.
« on: July 29, 2009, 10:52:41 PM »
Thats just bullshit. I think someone is trying to defend a bad port.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/100/1009002p1.html

Wii has a 770mhz CPU and a 220mhz GPU, an iPhone has a 412mhz CPU. 3GS has a 600mhz CPU but no one is going to mess with that power when most people have the original or 3G thats clocked at 400mhz.

More powerful than a DS or PSP yes, Wii no.

You know, I like Telltale and respect what they've done bringing back the Adventure genre from the abyss...but honestly, they aren't an incredibly competent development studio from a programming standpoint (even on PC).  I don't see how anyone can take this seriously.  The Wii is dramatically and tragically underpowered, but it's at least better than the frickin' iPhone.

Who was it who said that we should take the word of a developer over what other people say in regards to the power of the Wii? it may have been a staff member.

I'm sorry but I just can't take what Telltalegames says seriously on this.  The engine they're using for Monkey Island is the same engine they've been using since Sam & Max: Season 1 back in 2006, and that wasn't even considered a particularly taxing graphical engine back then (and it had framerate problems back then, too).  Are we really supposed to believe that the Wii just can't handle a mediocre 3-year old Adventure game engine?  If a more ambitious and established developer like Square-Enix or whatnot had said this, then I could accept that at some level it could be true.  But with Telltalegames I think it had more to do with them probably trying to directly port their engine over without optimizing it to work on Wii.

I've been reading through the original thread on Telltalegame's site that spawned this thread, and apparently the sticking point with Telltale is the Wii's memory capacity: "88 MB RAM w/ a 3 MB texture memory and frame-buffer" compared to 128 MB RAM on the iPhone.  The Wii trumps it in every other technical regard, but apparently of those 88 MB RAM on the Wii a large portion of that is used by the OS and so the developers can't use it.  They were also complaining about WiiWare's pitiful 40 MB storage cap.  Alright, fair enough but I find it funny that Mario Galaxy (a much more technically impressive game than anything Telltale's ever put out...and probably ever will put out) can run at a flawless or nearly-flawless framerate, and yet Monkey Island apparently can't?

Is there even an iPhone game that approaches Mario Galaxy or Twilight Princess or Hell RE4 or RE: Darkside Chronicles or any other of the good looking Wii games?

Is it some kind of new company policy to see how badly you can troll Wii owners so the sales of your games tanks because you pissed off the userbase?

Nice to know Capcom doesn't seem to mind down-porting RE4 to the damn iPhone.  Artistic integrity my ass.

I want to bump the RE5 thread just to post this quote in there.. but I won't.

Guess artistic integrity expires once there's prettier graphics to be had?

Wii's CPU is 729Mhz and the GPU is 243Mhz. It's a PowerPC CPU which *I believe* is more capable than an ARM CPU like the iPhone has. The iPhone's CPU is 600Mhz, but it does support shaders (wii does not), and has 256MB RAM. You'll probably never see a Metroid Prime 3-quality game on the iPhone, but it is a quite capable machine. Having said that, I hate the iPhone.

After playing a bit of Monkey Island episode 1, I can tell Talltale is full of ****. Nintendo's ARTSTYLE games run better then the opening scenes from said episode. The game is so buggy.

How about we just do some "proof in the pudding" work?

There exists an RE4 on both the GameCube (and Wii) and the iPhone.  RE4 is still very impressive to this day and even does specular mapping, something UBIsoft said the Wii couldn't do (but somehow the GC can?).  RE4 iPhone looks like a joke.

Based on my eyeball and the majority of Wii and iPhone games, The Wii stomps the hell out of the iPhone.  So this Telltale guy is either and idiot or a troll, and I really wish it were a generation where the latter wasn't possible.

Well if you read the comments in context and also how Broodwars summarized it, he was referring to the RAM in both systems.

I do think it was an underwhelming amount of ram for a current generation system to have, even if it wasn't pushing HD graphics. With the price of RAM being cheaper than ever at the time the Wii came out, it didn't really make sense for Nintendo to not spend an extra $1.75 on bumping the RAM upto measly 125mb total so there is room to push the systems capabilities instead of fight against it's shortcomings.

But beyond that, even with the much smaller amount of RAM, the Wii is still far more capable graphically than the iPhone, and the next DS should be on slightly above par when compared to the GC so thats what the iPhone will be compared  against in the next 24months.

You've got to scale back a earlier than the system launch and deal with the RAM prices that existed prior to the system's mass production, at the time the supplier orders/contracts were being finalized. (and not to mention trying to anticipate MASS RECESSION AND GLOBAL FINANCIAL MELTDOWN? that helps tech prices fall)

And Wii isn't shoved with everyday PC RAM to begin with.

Mass Recession and Global Financial meltdown wasn't even on the tip of anybodies tongue back in 2005/2006.
The housing market was doing fine and housing prices were still on the rise. RAM was cheap then, and with the size order Nintendo was putting in (minimum of 5million over the first year), I'm sure they were getting rock bottom prices. It wouldn't have cost much more per system to bump the ram up 40MB, even if it wasn't 1T-SRAM they used to make up the difference.
