The remake of an indie platformer has been confirmed for WiiWare.

Nigoro has officially announced that they are co-developing WiiWare title La-Mulana with Nicalis.  Nicalis is also assuming publishing duties. NWR recently reported that the two companies had joined forces to co-develop and publish future titles.

In La-Mulana you play as Dr. Lemeza Kosugi, an archeologist who explores the remains of an ancient civilization. The game is a 2D platformer that is reminiscent of the 2D Castlevania and Metroid games.

The WiiWare version is a remake of the 2005 PC title that will feature updated graphics and gameplay. Downloadable content is planned which will allow you to download a Boss Rush and new special stages.

La-Mulana is planned to be released in North America in winter 2009.

Los Angeles, CA (July 27, 2009) – Nigoro, a division of Asterizm Co., today announced an all-new remade LA-MULANA, co-developed and published by Nicalis, Inc., to appear on WiiWare in late 2009. The original Windows version was inspired by the action-adventure games of the 1980s a visual style indicative of that era. In contrast, the all-new remake of LA-MULANA features stunning new graphics and gameplay.

Sealed since long ago the ruins of LA-MULANA are yours to explore. Assume the role of famed archeologist, Dr. Lemeza Kosugi and uncover the remains of an ancient civilization, the origin of man and all life as we know it. Developed in conjunction with Nicalis, Inc. the re-imagined LA-MULANA features a robust all-new game engine built specifically for LA-MULANA with vibrant hand-drawn artwork, original audio and special effects not seen in the original—which used a limited 16-color palette.

Additionally, the new console version of LA-MULANA will expand the mysteries of the ruins with downloadable content support including new gameplay modes (such as Boss Rush), special stages and more. From Japan to China, Europe and North America, Nigoro has gained a wide audience. Fans all over world have experienced games designed by Nigoro, “We want to develop more games for consoles and bring back that ‘excitement of classic games.Â’ ItÂ’s the concept for our games in the future, so thank you and bon appĂ©tit for the support!,” said Shoji Nakamura of Nigoro.

Nicalis is on a roll with Cave Story, Nights Game, and now La-Mulana. I wonder if they have the gall to port Rose & Camellia since it's like Punch-Out except it's with women slapping each other.

They sure seem to focus on free games a lot, might work well if they tried to get something like Bunny Must Die since that never saw a mainstream release.

Maybe... Tanabe did mention in an interview that the original idea was to have Peach as the secret character in Punch Out.
