I don't have many friends who are into the Beatles [...]

You need a better class of friends.

A class that listens to mediocre popular music which was only ever influential because it emerged right at the birth of mass media, which all but completely murdered worthwhile media of any form?

Y'know, the Beatles "pop" music doesn't extend very far into their career. Why don't you check out Revolver or the White Album some day, you may be surprised.

You mean when they realized that people were becoming ever so slightly disinterested and that they could keep being massively popular if they became chameleons and adapted themselves to whatever music was popular in any given era? Being different than they were doesn't make them not popular. All they ever did was produce music for the masses, just like popular music today and every day since the advent of mass media.

More like whatever music they created in any given era became popular.  Just sayin'.

I'll definitely be picking this up, though just the game.  My existing Guitar Hero gear will suffice.  This is the ONLY band that in my mind deserves their own game.  Aerosmith, Metallica, and Van Halen are all big acts but there are like a hundred other acts that are on par with them in popularity.  So you can always say "well shouldn't so-and-so get their own game?" and we get, well, what we have, a flooded marketplace.  But there is no one as big as The Beatles.  If they were the only ones that had their own game if anyone said "what about so-and-so" you could say "they're not The Beatles" and that's the end of it.

I used to think the Beatles were overrated when I was in high school but that was before I actually, you know, listened to them.  They have so much variety and evolved so much in such a short time.  You listen to Please Please Me and Across the Universe and it's like "this is the same band?"  And these songs are only about seven years apart.  Most bands release about three albums that sound virtually identical in that time.  There are bands that have been around and relevent for 30 years that have not covered that much breadth and these guys did it in less than 10.

One thing that is not often talked about but should be is that The Beatles were self-sufficient and changed popular music as a result.  When I think of a pop act I think of some pretty slut who sings whatever half-assed bullshit her record company shoves in her face.  That is the perfect example of a manufactured phony act.  When The Beatles made it, it was not common for the artist to write their own material.  You were a performer that sang songs written by professional songwriters.  There were exceptions like Buddy Holly but that was the norm for mainstream acts.  The Beatles changed that.  Not only did they write their own material but that become the norm for rock n roll.  Everyone does it now.  It's expected.  There is obviously tons of record company bullshit still but a signed artist doesn't go into the studio with a whole album's worth of original material and get told "'fraid not" and is forced to record 10 covers to go with the two of his own songs he was allocated.  There is so much more creative control than what their was then and The Beatles are the reason for it.

When I read this part, the only other band I can think of (that isn't the Cure ;)) is Bloc Party. I'm not saying they're as good as or anywhere near the same level  as The Beatles, BUT.. I gotta give em credit, only 3 studio albums under their belt and they've grown quite a bit and i still listen to their first album and most recent and think "wow, i can't believe these are the same four guys.."

Have you checked them out Ian? Besides those videos i linked to you awhile back?

Most bands release about three albums that sound virtually identical in that time.  There are bands that have been around and relevent for 30 years that have not covered that much breadth and these guys did it in less than 10.

First band i thought of was AC/DC :P Still love 'em, though not as much as another similar band; The Ramones

The key is that they changed so much but where still the same amazing band. Still put out the hits in different styles. Bands sometimes change but aren't any good once they do.

This is the ONLY band that in my mind deserves their own game.  Aerosmith, Metallica, and Van Halen are all big acts but there are like a hundred other acts that are on par with them in popularity.

And Activision will continue to pump out Guitar Hero games until all one hundred acts have their own game.  Is that really so hard to believe?

For what it's worth, I think a Rage Against The Machine Guitar Hero would be freaking sweet.

I dunno about that, bud i'd def. buy The Cure Rock Band day one ;)

I'm sure by thend a keyboard controller will be standard in band games, so it'd fill out alot of the Cure's sound nicely :)

I just hope the series stays profitable long enough to allow enough time for my band to get signed, release some albums, build a big fanbase and then get our own game.  So let's say... ten years?  Apparently Aerosmith has made more money from Guitar Hero than album sales and they've been releasing albums for over 30 years!  Cha-ching! ;)

Ditto.  There are a couple of bands that would interest my purchase.  Unfortunately for Activision that bands they have picked so far are all acts that, while I overall enjoy them and own at least one album of each one, they all:

A. Have not made music I have considently liked thoughout their whole career.  Each band has some point where I ceased to like any material by them from that point on.  That whole "band changes sound and now they suck" scenario we were talking about.  Aerosmith is performing in Vancouver soon and if this was before 1996 or so I would check them out.  But because they have a good ten years of more modern hits that I cannot stand I don't want to see them in case they focus too much on the newer weaker material.

B. Are severely overplayed on my local radio stations.  One thing that keeps The Cure's biggest hits fresh to me no matter how many times I hear them is I only really hear them when I choose to listen to them.  A Cure song on the radio for me is like a rare treat.  Van Halen on the radio is a "let's see what else is on" as I've heard Jump, Panama and Running With the Devil so many times the songs do nothing for me at all anymore (but something more obscure like Atomic Punk will).

You've got your facts slightly wrong.  Aerosmith made more money from Guitar Hero: Areosmith than from their last album.  A little more believable now, right?

Ah, I see.  Well that's probably not much of an accomplishment then.  But it's actually more encouraging as the fear of record companies screwing you on royalties is something I've always feared and this sounded like a perfect example of that.  Like even big bands like Aerosmith get jerked around so much that a side-project like a videogame would make them more money.

It's scary when you use the word "side-project" when in relation to bands and video games.. Artists that I like always seem to have some sort of spin-off band these days, but imagine if they started making video games, not neccessarily in the rockband/guitar hero format, just to get their music out there... weird.

Last (and only) time i played my copy of Mushroom Men, I fought off giant rats in some sort of mineshaft. It looked like it might be fun but i got sidetracked catching up on other games i had at the time, and now i'm sidetracked playing some newer games (Rune Factory Frontie FTW!) but.. i didn't notice anything special about the music. I take it there's some info i'm missing here?

You're missing Les motherf***ing Claypool, apparently. He made an album out of all the work he did on the Mushroom Men soundtrack called Of Fungi or Foe. Also, aside from Les Claypool, the way the music in Mushroom Men is presented is absolutely amazing. Ambient noises and sound effects blend perfectly in time with the music, making the songs which were created for the environment to also be a PART of the environment.

The music and by proxy the atmosphere were the only real reasons to play that game. I can't believe you didn't notice it. o_0

I'll have to check out the album and play Mushroom Men again. I bought it back when Circuit City was liquidating everything but I only played it for about an hour or so and haven't touched it since. That was this past winter i believe. Obviously of all things to remember from such a short time with the game, the music wasn't one of them.

I think I'm coming at it from a different angle because while I was interested in the concept of playing a living mushroom, my real motivation for playing the game was Les Claypool doing the music. I love Les Claypool.
