New Pictures of my black belt test, lots of high kicking!
« on: June 26, 2009, 02:18:20 PM »
Boy oh boy am I depressed... I had one more class before my black belt test this sunday, and I re-pulled my hamstring, doing something called a butterfly twist. Normally I am super happy go lucky and nothing can bring me down, but man guys, it just feels like the whole world is coming down when I can't move.

I was injured for some time, and just this monday, I was kicking almost full power with my left leg, sweeping, skipping, spliting left & right, and jumping any way I wanted. I got to excited and pushed it too far.

I know it doesn't seem like such a big deal, but for me this was going to be a dream come true. The last 4 years I spent through thick and thin, conditioning and getting stronger. Having better form then Kilik in soul calibur(only due to animation flaws hahaha) and now i'm just going to sit on the side during our big black belt celebration this weekend.  People keep saying be positive, be positive, but its way to hard! My head coach doesn't even realize how bad it is, I don't even want to face him today.

Have any of you had really bad injuries? If so what were they, and how did you deal with them? This isn't the first time I hurt my self pretty badly. One thing I have always been good about was healing. Dislocating my knee, destroying my heels, and ankles. There were times I thought my body should be in pieces(well not really) and after so long I always got back up to speed.

But this is honestly the 4th time I rehurt my leg in the last year. I have no doubt that I can heal again, but I want it faster, and make sure it heals properly.

Does anyone know anything about the the MendMeShop?

http://shop.mendmeshop.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=32

I'm thinking of getting this product to speed up the healing process. Would anyone have any recommendations?

I have had a few injurys.

When I was younger I had lots of injuries. Namely to my knees and head.

Now a days I don't really get injured.

I dealt with my head injurys by getting stitches in my head.

Knee injuries I stay in bed with my legs elevated.Ice helps.

That is the first time I heard about that product Caterkiller.

I'm not a total expert but if you want it to heal properly than it takes time.

Hope you recover nicely.

Ouch dude! I don't even know what to say but that i'm sure we're all sorry for you having to miss out on the black belt festivities. You'll heal in time, and be back on top I'm sure, and you could've ended up with much worse injuries so really.. you kinda HAVE to stay positive! haha

I've only had one major injury in my life, and it really wasn't that bad i just use the word major because i ended up with both forearms in casts. I was skateboarding in a local park, went down a huge hill and gained way more speed than i could handle. On top of that, the path i was on was pretty narrow and this mom and her two young kids were coming up the other end, so i tried to stay as far right as possible in order to avoid knocking them over... well the further to the right i went the more dirt and pebbles their were on the concrete so of course, i lost control and fell on my ass. I actually rolled once or twice before planting my hand out and stopping myself..

Ended up with a few scratches and cuts on my (exposed) shoulder, arms and hands, and fractured the same bone in both my wrists. Somehow i didnt go to the hospital for like a week or two after it happened (my family had me convinced i was fine but i knew something was wrong when i couldnt turn a door knob..), and then i got the news i'd have to have my wrists put it casts for 2 months. It wasn't THAT bad.. i got used to it pretty quickly, though i got tired of having to explain to curious high school peers what the hell happened to me.

I was very paranoid that my wrists wouldn't heal right and i'd never be able to play guitar again... but i think i'm safe so far. Haven't had any problems with my wrists this many years after the accident, so i should be good right? RIGHT!?

Sorry to hear about that, Caterkiller.  It sucks but you can still achieve your goal, just not at this particular time.  I've had goals take longer to achieve than I wanted to but when I achieved them it just didn't matter anymore.  I was just so thrilled with the end result.  So when you get your black belt you won't be bothered by this anymore.

As for my personal injuries.  I strained my ankle playing volleyball in high school.  In crutches for about a week, didn't play volleyball for two weeks.  It bugs me every once in a while.

In high school I was wrestling with my brother on the trampoline and he dropped me right on my head which hurt like hell.  Since then I've had neck problems which were aggrivated by a car accident.  Every doctor I go to says it's just because I work at a computer all day.  I'm quite skeptical of that since I know I had neck problems before I started my job and the head drop thing occured right before the problem started.  But every doctor brushes that off.

I have a pinched nerve in my lower back which causes numbness in my leg.  I don't know how I got it.  There's no obvious injury or anything.  i was on vacation in Southern California and the morning after I was at Universal Studios my leg was numb.  Perhaps I hurt myself on one of the rides but there is no obvious incident where I can say "yep, that caused it."

I have plenty of injuries. My most recent being a pinched synoptic <sp?> nerve.

1st major one was back in middle school (6th grade) when I got my finger coaught on the basketball chain. Ripped the skin back so that I could see the bone. It was the patch of skin on the inside of the hand inb etween the the crease for the tip of the finger and the crease for the main knuckle on your middle finger. required 12 stitches & I still have a nice scar to show off on that one. I left a blood trail all the way to the school office but surprisingly, it didn't hurt until the doctor poured Hydrogen Peroxide on it.

Next was a dislocated elbow & broken growth plate in my wrist, both on the left arm, while dunking a basketball on a rainy day (6th or 7th grade).
I grabbed the rim (10ft regulation) and somehow slipped off and landed 10 ft away from the hoop using my hand to break my fall. I didn't notice anything was wrong at first until my friend asked what happened to my elbow. that when I tried to move it and couldn't then was ushered off to the nurses office at school.  That injury didn't hurt either until the school nurse tried to forcefully straighten my arm after i didn't move it on her request(it was dislocated so I obviously couldn't move it... I almost punched her in the face).

The next injury was a few weeks later during gym class. I had a cast on my left arm past my elbow and the P.E. teacher wouldn't let me sit out on Earth Ball Volley Ball. Everyone is using two hands and barely getting it over the net and I'm expected to use one hand to do the same thing. I ended up majorly spraining my right wrist because of that, and now I have wrist that can be weak from time to time. (wish I had sued her back then)

Next one was 8th grade during a CYO basket game were I rolled my ankle inward after landing wrong on a rebound and the guy next to me landed on my foot forcing my ankle all the way to the floor. think of an L shape and thats how my ankle was. I couldn't walk on it for a few weeks.

Then the only other one I can remember is about 8-9 weeks ago when I threw my back out. That was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. It was like the school nurse was twisting my dislocated elbow around while banging on my broken wrist with a hammer and making sure the pain localized in the lower part of my back while electrocuting me to make all the muscles in my body spasm only magnifying the pain further, completely disabling me from moving.

Doing some quick searches I don't see any red flags pop out right away. No 'buyer beware' notes or articles warning about it being dangerous. I did come across this list of warnings about how not to use it so be sure to have a look at it before using it. Also, of course, checking with a doctor first is a must I believe.

Caterkiller, have you checked in with a proper doctor to see how long it would take to heal yourself?

How often are these black belt tests given?

I know my martial arts master has a general test for the colored belts once a month. But black belt tests are planned out in advance and depending on the requirements may need a lot of planning and organization. I know in my art you have like three skills tests (which are a little more flexible) and then a final demo (that is not as flexible because it is more of a performance which you invite guests to).

Injuries are more of a frustration because of how long it may take to get another test. A fellow student had to wait several months to get another shot at one of the black belt tests.

Also, my master had to wait close to a year for his second Dan test because of an eye injury that ruined his annual window to fly to his test with the Grand Master.

Thanks for the encouragement, and the ultra sound info guys. Because I also work there, I know my teacher can privately test me when im up to speed. So I wont have to wait another 6 months to a year for the next group to get theirs. Though it will probably take that long to be able comfortably do all of my forms.

My teacher just told me last night, just omit the things I can't do, because i've earned it and so on. But because of the nature of the sport, the super low stances, I don't think I can do squat at the moment.

And IanSane your right, once I actually make it there to the goal, this whole wait wont matter at all. I will see how I am feeling tomorrow, if I can do 90 percent of what I have to I will go for it. If not, I will just wait.

Wow, I know how to show you guys pictures now! I AM A MAN!

I went through my test and except for kicking with my left leg I did everything! And everyone said they couldn't even tell I was injured.

I told myself I wouldn't cry when I recieved my belt, but then my teacher gave this little speach about me, and I couldn't help it.

I'm 23 now, I started when I was 18. Time really flew by. Allot of the kids were doing it for way longer than me. And some of the older guys were getting their second or 4th degree's. It was supposedly a record number of testers this time around.

The little happy boy in all black in the middle, he was the kid who kicked Chris Tucker in Rush Hour 3, in the martial arts school scene. Actually almost everyone of us in the picture was in that scene. But He got to do the coolest part!

And the older girl in purple to the right of me is Q'orianka Kilcher, she was pocahauntis(sp?) in that movie "the new world" with Colin Ferral(sp?) Her wushu is pretty good.

Me splitting, in white.

The kids that tested are cute. I loved working with the 'little dragons' as they were called at my school.
A friend was teaching a new little boy how to 'ki hap' and scared the kid half to death because she is very intense. It was funny, but by the end of the session he had connected what it meant and was yelling at the top of his lungs.

I remember that scene from the movie. Are you in it as well? I'll have to go back and look for you.
