I'm stunned.

I got back from the event a short time ago and was expecting 5-10 people to show up. We got 30 people in a store that's maybe 150 square feet, and I was able to get the "Cold Caller" title out of it.

Also, someone brought a Japanese cart that had a lot of amazing maps that may never come out here that are rated in the high 80s and the low 90s + all of the old DQ end boss dungeons.

It was awesome.

I went to one of few events yesterday and connected with a little less than 20 players. I got a bunch of maps, the highest level I got is in the 60s, I scored a poster too. It was nice, people stuck around to run through a few dungeons.
Shaymin, your event sounds like the crown experience.
The map Nintendo gave out is just a boss and he made short work of me :/

None of my local GameStops had one of the events, but my Best Buy is doing one next week. I'll try and make it, but I'm not expecting a huge turnout. I'm really hooked on this game; I'm still pretty early on, buti can definitely see myself sinking a ton of time into it.

Kmart has a deal going on 8/1-8/6 where you buy DQXI they toss in LoZ Phatom Train free.  So that's like $17.50 a piece.

Phantom Train? I don't know if you mean Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks (which had trains in it). Either way, I hate the controls of the DS Zeldas. If you don't mind the controls, that is a great deal.

I just got DQIX yesterday and I am LOVING it. Already at the "black knight" part (he kicked my ass--gonna have to grind a bit). Best Buy is doing some kind of promotion next week. Hopefully I'll be able to hook up with other players. This game is just insanely awesome.

I want to get this game, but I have to save up the little money I do have to get a replacement Wii (I am trying to get a job).

I learned today that what I've heard about this series over the years is true. I was getting bored by how easy the combat was getting, and then ran into a boss that annihilated me twice in a row, forcing me to grind for an hour to be able to beat him.

If he kicked your ass you might not have gotten your party yet.  A bunch of people seemed to have skipped that part but one of the girls in the Quester's Rest lets you create a party.

Yeah. I read the instruction manual and found out how to craft new party members (kinda lame). I made a useless Mage, leveled her up a bit, and she was still killed almost instantly. Luckily, my hero character was at Lv. 12, so she was able to beat down the Black Knight after that.

Its unfortunate that its easy to skip.

I didn't skip that part but I did the Alltrades Abbey quest out of order so I got creamed by the Lleviathan and changed classes a little late.

Halbred did you just make a mage or did you make all three party members?  It sounds like you only made one for some reason.

Can you make more than one at a time?

You can make up to three additional characters. There are also some characters already made if you don't want to bother with the creation process.

I think that you can make as many characters as you like, but you cannot only have up to 3 of them accompany you at time.

I was at the Gamestop event this past weekend, and got 4 people canvassed as guests.  I didn't download the special map, though, because I didn't stay for the event at all.  I thought that just being in the vicinity of the event would allow me to download the map automatically, just like it does the guests.  Sadly, I was wrong....  :'(

You can make another 3 people to go with you giving you a party of 4 all at the same time.  The random ones created for me looked terrible so I created all of mine.

I'll put a few more things down that are very easy to confuse.

This might help people when they decide to change jobs.
When you change a job your character goes back to level 1.  The only thing that carries over are the skills you earned in the weapon and character classes.  This means that you can earn metal slash and whipping boy as a soldier and then if you become a gladiator you keep the skills but go to level 1.  You can change  back to the original class anytime you want and it will still be at the level it was when you left.
Don't worry if you change your mind and put the skillpoints in the wrong weapon or class.  If anyone wants easy skillpoints later in the game just change to a class you never want to use and the later enemies will make them jump up in level in a few battles.  When they earn skillpoints you don't have to spend them on that classes abilities, you can change back to the the class you like and use the skill points for its abilities.

Don't worry about having some characters be weaker when they change classes.  Give them the newest armor and they will catch up very quickly just by fighting the enemies.  No grinding needed since the newest armor should keep them alive long enough so they can fend for themselves, except for the Sage because you don't get that class until the last dungeon.

There are two quests that took me forever because I didn't understand everything so this should stop you from getting stuck.  No spoilers.  One quest makes you kill frightened scarewolves.  To do this you need to scare them with war cry and then kill them before they get a turn.  The thief quests where you steel things takes forever.  You need to pick steal until you finally get it.  All the monsters with that name have the items, they just take about a billion turns to get.

I can't find those dam scarewolves to save my life.  I know the area they roam but when I go there, I never see them spawn.  I got lucky once and ended up fighting one as a support enemy of an enemy I ran into in the field.  There's another quest that has me stumped which is the one where you have to help the old man inside stormway castle locate some old book or something.  I've checked the castle from top to bottom and can't find a thing.  I want to check the bookshelf he is standing in front of but the bastard won't move lol.  There a few of these quests that have me stumped but I'm trying not to resort to gamefaqs.

I had trouble finding where the scarewolves are because when you are at Dourbridge the part of the map that brings you to the tiny scarewolf area in the south is covered by your party's names.

That Stornway quest.  Someone should tell you to search the royal treasure room.  The paper you are looking for is on the bottom of the treasure chest you opened in the back of the royal treasure room in Stornway.

Thanks for the info Sixth, I'm at the boss right before you but I took some time out to grind a bit.  I finally got my priest to learn multiheal which will be a big help but I'm debating if I should get my martial artists into a new vocation becuase outside of his agility, he hasn't been much help to me.

As for Zing, that spell could be a pain in the ass sometimes.  There isn't anything worse than casting Zing 3 times and none be successful.  That's a battle killer right there.

Zing is a hit or miss spell, though more miss than hit.  If you have a Sage, you can the spell Kazing, which guarantees a revival.  I believe that kazing is learned when the Sage reaches level 45.

As for the martial artist, I recommend getting 100% on both the Claw and Focus skills.  Add in 100% of the shield skill from another vocation and your martial artist will become a beast!  My martial artist at 100 tension and attacking with Hardclaw yields almost 2,000 damage.

So, worth knowing: Grotto bosses have rare drops with a 2% chance of dropping.  Due to the way the RNG works, using the quick save and heal, it's possible to manipulate your chances to always get their 2% drop item, provided you don't use a Coup de Grace attack and they don't summon an ally.

Considering some of these items are worth getting four times, it's worth knowing.  This is the link to the applet that does the math for you.

It's pretty simple.
First, make sure you can use the heal spell on your party six or seven times without maxing anyone's health, by lowering your HP.
Next, quick save inside the same room as the Grotto boss.
Then, turn off your DS.
After that, check your heal caster's Magic Mending and input it into the first box.  Click the button by the box.
The number that appears is the lower value in the range your healer can heal for with one heal spell.
After that, heal party members about five times total, recording each heal's value into each of the lower boxes.
After you reach about five or six, click the bottom box.
You should see a few red numbers with a Java and CGI link next to them.  You want there to be just one red number.  If there's more, go back, heal again, and enter the new numbers.  If there's just one, click it.

After that, things are relatively easy.  A table should appear with red, white, and blue squares. You'll be considered "on" the square that's equal to the number of times you've healed already.  You have to "progress" to the square right before a red one.  To do that, you have to keep healing, even if you have max HP.  The good news?  Healing at max HP doesn't cost MP.  Count the number of squares to the first red one and use multiheal to move four squares forward and heal to move one.

Once you do that, fight the boss.  Fight normally, but don't use your Coup de Grace.  When you win, as long as it didn't summon an enemy, you should have the 2% item.

This process is a lot simpler than it sounds, I promise!

I usually try to avoid exploits like that.

Outside of this I think the thief is important for anyone going into a grotto because their coup de gras gives you an automatic item drop.  I got a weapon from Shogun because of it.

As for Zing, that spell could be a pain in the ass sometimes.

Its only a pain the ass until you don't have it.

Nah, their Coup de Grace fails most of the time on grotto bosses.  And, sure you can avoid using the exploit, but just wait until you see how much damage some of the legacy bosses can do at their lowest level.  Running through the same dungeon about a hundred times to find a couple of rare drops from an old grotto boss does not sound entirely too appealing to me.  Especially considering how you'd have to do it about a hundred times for nearly every grotto boss.

I'll worry about that when I get there.  If the bosses are so strong it will probably mean a ton of grinding just to get my characters up to speed.  If there aren't dungeons that bring my characters up naturally or close to it I probably won't beat all the bosses.  If I get one of those diamond metal slime grotto's I hear about I might change my mind because it would make leveling up cake.

I just beat the last boss and I'm surprised how much of the map I haven't even been to yet.  The last two DS DQ games gave you a flying machine before the end and this one didn't, there is still so much to do and I think the quest I am on will help me get there.
