True True. Dragon Quest isn't really that popular in the West for some reason. I will probably get this to familarize myself with the series before Dragon Quest X.

I was really excited for it but its been too long and I just can't seem to get pumped.  I'll definitely get it but they really dropped the ball.  There have been hacked roms with complete (nonenglish) translations out for months and months already, its not like this couldn't have been finished ages ago.

I've got this pre-ordered, but I'm not as excited for it as I once was.  The extended wait and the lack of wi-fi support disappointed me.  I doubt there will be any occasion for me to go questing with anyone else locally.

I know most anime conventions have a console gaming room and many of them set up certain times for certain game meet ups. So it's feasible that after the game comes out a convention may have a DQIX meet area to tag up.

Nintendo Week did an entire episode on this game. They will have another next week. They went over the basics on the episode.

Maxi, if you have access to a PS2, I'd highly recommend checking out Dragon Quest VIII.

Not going to the event, but I do have my copy preordered off Amazon.com along with DQ VIII for PS2.  Very excited about playing this as it also gives me a reason to fire my DS up after the disappointing Spirit Tracks Zelda. :)

I wish I could go to the event, but I can't.

I do have the review copy right now, though. This game is very good and addictive. The embargo for reviews went up today, but I only got the game a few days ago and I haven't been able to get through enough of it to review it.

Something i've always wondered, do the companies usually give you a reason for an embargo or do they just give you a date?

The interview was really eye opening and had no idea that there was so many things that the developers focus on.
I knew that Dragon Quest is a big thing in Japan but I didn't know it had such a social aspect to it. Tag mode clearly opened that up even more.I really want to go to Japan now just to see the phenomenon.

Sorry for being a little OT, but here's a brief word of advice about Dragon Quest VIII:  For each character, choose to allocate your skill points into just one weapon area.  I found out that the game is far too stingy with it's points to get the highest skills in more than one area during a normal playthrough of the game.

EDIT: After hearing Neal's positive impressions of DQ IX on the latest NWR Newscast, I'm getting far more excited about getting this from Amazon this week.  Between my credits I obtained for my Monster Hunter and SMG2 preorders, I'm getting this game for $5!  :)

I wish I could have checked out the NY event. I watched half of the Iwata Asks and pretty much absorbed any info that's out there. I'm finishing up DQIV so I should be ready for IX!

It's just a date and/or time. Generally it's so they can kind of control when information hits. It could be for a good reason (maybe to control hype for the game so its highest when it comes out shortly after reviews come out), or because the game's really disappointing and had good buzz in previews. From having a little undisclosed time behind the PR facade, I know the PR reps usually are aware of, or should be aware of, the quality of their games.

EDIT: Also, the review's almost done. Should be up tomorrow if all goes well.

I'm really surprised at how much they have streamlined the game. I'm wondering if its because of the move to the portable field that required the change of pace. Everything just seems to happen a lot faster unlike previous titles in DQ (which were slow starters, just to check a dresser or open a door felt slow as sh*t). Here, you just run around town doing what you please at a decent clip. I've also seemed to have notice that there is a lot less grinding required this time around (at least in the time I've put into it) which I'm sure will make many people happy. I'm a rpg grinder by nature though so it doesn't affect me either way.

One thing that I'll like to say about this game is that I feel as if its taking the series and some traditional rpg conventions and advancing them slightly yet at the same time taking some gameplay back to the old NES days. It has been over 10 years since I can remember actually naming my whole party. I know that is a small feature which gets overlooked but it is something I have missed since the introduction to more detailed stories and voice acting in games. I love the fact that I can name my 4 characters as my close friends. It makes me feel like a kid again and gets my imagination racing which helps build character into the lifeless avatars. Walking into towns with my 3 friends in tow make me feel as if we're some sort of mercenary group who go around righting every wrong we come across, little by little making a name for ourselves.

On another note, I'm also surprised at how much of the world seems open to you at first. I've only reached the second town outside the Observatory but after running around a bit, I've seen a few more areas I can go and discover. I'm just thinking of grinding a bit to get my 3 comrads up to snuff since I've just recruited them.

Loving this game though, really surprised at how deep this game seems, specially for a handheld rpg.

Enjoy, you can't go wrong with either lol.  One question I have though, do I have to go back to that Quester's Inn everytime I want to go online?  I don't want to have to keep using an item to teloport back to that city everytime I want to go tagging.
