Time for a thread, no?
http://kotaku.com/5276497/liveblogging-shigeru-miyamotos-developer-round-tablehttp://wii.ign.com/articles/989/989996p1.htmlProcessing is an issue that devs have been dealing with since the 8 bit age. They add.
7:25 p.m.: Q: How do you feel about Nintendo's E3 show last year and is this year's presence a response to that?
A: Last year, Miyamoto really didn't uphold his part of the instrument playing on stage, he jokes. "If I pick up an instrument, I tend to lose focus," he says. That's actually pretty funny.
Miyamoto says that every project they do pushes the wiis limits. That's what they do.
(Wii HD incoming?)
7:22 p.m.: Unfortunately, no online mode in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, by the way. Miyamoto just confirmed. Wii is already being overpowered by what's happening on screen in New Super Mario Bros Wii. So no power left for online.
7:05 p.m.: "There are people who think of Zelda more as an RPG with simpler controls, so trying to figure out how to make everybody happy is something that's going to concern me," says Miyamoto.
7:05 p.m.: "Think of Zelda while you're trying some of the archery and sword play in Wii Sports Resort," Miyamoto say.
7:04 p.m.: "We'd like to make it compatible with Wii MotionPlus. It's quite possible it will be playable only with Wii MotionPlus."
7:03 p.m.: Shows new illustration for the next Zelda for Wii. Nothing to show yet, but it shows an adult link. More grown up than ever before.
8:08
He looked perhaps like a young man or older teen. Standing against his back was the woman in blue. She had a cap of blue. It was very generic. I assume she was zelda.
8:07
The painting for the new zelda had link standing with his back to us his head turned so we could see his face.
8:05
But he wants to make sure everyone can enjoy the game
8:05
He would love to bring in he sword play and archery
8:04
It depends on how well motion plus does 8:04
It shows link and a female in blue in a robe. It's a painting. He wants to annonce it next year. And I should be motion plus compatible. Maybe only wii motion plus
8:03
He did bring the main illustration foe next zelda title
8:02
I wanted to annonce a zelda game for wii
OH god yes!
7:03 p.m.: Shows new illustration for the next Zelda for Wii. Nothing to show yet, but it shows an adult link. More grown up than ever before.
6:57 p.m.: He reiterated that Spirit Tracks has a lot of train travel in it.
7:52
If all goes well we might buy ourselves a little island in the south pacific and create our own woohoo island 7:52
I was enamored with this idea of having this one location that is central to a lot of events
7:52
maybe wed put a hotel on this island and you would solve a murder mystery
7:52
Maybe I would do other games on woohoo island
7:51
Of course everyone knows Mario one thing id like to do is have woohoo island and do the same thing, have a license for a license
7:51
I've wanted to take a location and treat it like a character for a long time
7:50
The resort takes place on Woohoo island, It's the same island for Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus
6:53 p.m.: He uses an example of a hotel mystery game that's situated on the island. And as you're trying to solve the mystery, you recognize the island from other games.
6:52 p.m.: "So I think all of the games I'll be working on in the future will be on the island," he jokes.
(Did anyone else notice hyrule castle on the Island O_o)
6:51 p.m.: "I think some of you noticed this island here. This is the same island that appeared in Wii Fit. And it's also appearing in Wii Fit Plus. Something I've been thinking about for a long time is to take a location and treat it like a character," says Miyamoto.
blah blah blah
7:32
Really really far along, since we are releasing super mario bros. wii this year we decided to hold off on this until next year
7:31
This game contains about the same amount of content as the original
7:30
And the use of the drill
7:30
One of the new things is the inclusion of Yoshi
7:30
Once we got started we couldn't use, the team got so excited that they started making new stuff. 90 percent of what we used is brand new, maybe 95 percent or 99 percent 7:30
We started out talking about all of the things we weren't able to use, what the heck lets make super mario galaxy 1.5
7:29
(Miyamoto spoke to Totilo and I about this earlier today, we have a post up all about how the game came to be)
7:29
When we finished super mario galaxy we realized there were a ton of ideas we hadn't been able to use. We just weren't able to fit them all in.
7:28
Oh to Super Mario Galaxy 2
7:27
This is a game that allows people who are new to games to play with people who have been gaming for awhile
6:28 p.m.: "This is a really fun game to work on and develop, but it's also a really great game to play."
6:27 p.m.: Whenever he loses his ability, he uses a debug cheat to trigger it again. Too funny.
6:26 p.m.: Mario slides humorously through the level and hurls snow balls that freeze enemies in mid-air, creating platforms for the plumber to jump atop.
6:25 p.m.: Miyamoto plays one of his favorite stages, a snow level,
and here Mario dons a penguin suit. Nintendo's master designer dies in the game right off. "That's why we're not allowing any photographer." Pretty funny.
6:24 p.m.: The title features roughly 80-something levels.
7:27
They shoot sort of like a fire ball
7:26
He freezes enemies by throwing ice balls
7:26
Man, Miyamoto is pretty good at this
7:26
sound effects
7:26
Wow, he's doing a whole assortment of special effects
7:25
Then you can use them as a step
7:25
Oh the suit allows you to freeae things, like the flower
7:25
I think he forget he's doing a presntation
7:25
And now he's going "yooooooo"
7:25
How adorable, he's making little "ooop" noises as he jumps over enemies
7:24
That's why they're not allowing any photography
7:24
Whoops
7:24
Oh man, Miyamoto just died
7:24
The suit lets mario waddle around and scoot on his belly.
7:24
We're looking at level six, where you can get the penguin suit
7:24
(I believe ten are playable on the floor)
7:24
Roughly 80 some odd courses
7:23
We have a couple of multiplayer styles. You can play stages you cleared, or play it as you would a single player game
7:22
Yoshi was able to take one of the Hammer Bros. hammers and spit it out as a weapon as well
7:22
I played this earlier today, it's a ton of fun
7:22
Right now we're showing you with three, but this works perfectly with four players as well
7:21
While the game play may seem familiar, there are some interesting tricks incorporated into the title
7:20
As the players move the camera authomatically pans out or zooms in
7:20
Sometimes you're trying to help each other sometimes you're trying to throw each other into a chasm
6:22 p.m.: Wii's added processing power enables Nintendo to create this kind of multiplayer game because the console can handle all four players plus additional on-screen characters, etc.
6:21 p.m.: The camera in New Super Mario Bros. auto pans in or zooms out depending on what is happening between players at any given moment.
6:20 p.m.: (On NSMB Wii) The balance between competitive and cooperative multiplayer gameplay harkens back to the original Mario Bros.
6:19 p.m.: Miyamoto has been working on the Mario franchise for many years and he has always wanted to recreate the single-player gameplay that you get from the game for multiple players. With just about every Mario project he's worked on, he starts out with some kind of multiplayer functionality, but it usually doesn't come to fruition.
6:18 p.m.: Bill Trinen and two other members of NOA Treehouse take the stage and begin playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii while Miyamoto talks about it.
6:17 p.m.: He's going to start today by talking in more detail about New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports Resort and then Zelda. And when that's done, he'll answer some questions from the audience.
6:16 p.m.: He likes working on programs like these and he will, after E3, go back to Japan and do more of that kind of work, he says.
6:16 p.m.: "I kind of had this idea that it'd be great if you could carry your Nintendo DS with you as you made your way around town to your daily activities." Basically, as you go through the city, you'd get details about the various areas you're in, including shopping centers, etc. This is an idea he's been interested in for a while and has started to employ some of it in Japan already.
6:15 p.m.: "Actually, there's another project that's been taking a lot of time my time lately, but it's a very enjoyable project." he says. He adds that quite a few of us own a DS, but maybe don't carry it around with us on a daily basis.
6:14 p.m.: "And I'm involved in a lot of the games that we're showing here at the show. And our staff is a little smaller than usual thanks in part to the fear of Swine Flu. It's okay if I get sick, but some of the other guys, no," he says.
6:13 p.m.: "Actually, I've just been so busy for quite a while now. In actuality, from my hotel I'm sending e-mails to programmers back in Japan during my time here," he says.
6:13 p.m.: Miyamoto says he's going to begin talking and does. "I'm very lucky this year. I wasn't up on the stage during the briefing today so I'm in a very relaxed mood," he jokes.
6:12 p.m.: He introduces Shigeru Miyamoto, who takes the stage. Bill Trinen from NOA sits right in front of us and I give him a sexy massage on his shoulder. He winks at me. It's completely on.
6:11 p.m.: The room is quieter. But no Miyamoto. Now it's awkwardly quiet. Tim O'Leary from the Treehouse at Nintendo of America is tonight's host and translator. He reiterates no photography or video. He also says it in Japanese just in case.
6:10 p.m.: I do not yet see any puppeteering peripheral, but am not ruling it out.
6:09 p.m.: No video or photography allowed, by the way, so if you're reading this, not happening. You're going to have to rely on my detailed, vivid descriptions.
6:08 p.m.: Matt and Craig here. Craig is fiddling with his iPhone. This thing was supposed to start already, but it took longer checking in or setting up or doing something and the end result is this delay. People are still piling in. Shigeru Miyamoto has not yet made his appearance. And we saw New Super Mario Bros. Wii idling on one of the TVs up front, which suggests he's probably going to be talking about that one for a bit. We also spotted a DS, though. Maybe there's some kind of link between the games? Wishful thinking.
5:25 p.m.: Matty Boy and Craig have left IGN's war room and headed to the roundtable room, to prepare for the coming meeting of the minds. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get a little hyped here -- remember that Pikmin 3 got confirmed at the equivalent event last year, and Smash Bros. Brawl was revealed under similar circumstances a few years back too.
