My Idea of a Good Zelda Game
« on: April 15, 2003, 11:34:21 AM »
Well you all know by now how I feel about wind waker so here is the kind of zelda game I want, or would have liked.

Main Idea: The game is an advancement and evolution of Oot (since that game was near perfect in my opinion). Instead of trying to create a whole new zelda game we’re going to take what’s there and improve upon it, make it funner more innovative.
Graphics: Like Oot, of course they would be better because of gc’s  better graphics capabilities, but the same style. Same character design for link except he would be more detailed.
Plot: I’m thinking something tragic, I’m not into the happy, cheery, colorful, hippie zelda that some people seem to want. I want dark, grim, bad ass zelda. The game takes place some odd years after mm. There is a mysterious plague in hyrule that kills off almost everyone and monsters are back, all over the place terrorizing the remaining survivors. Link comes on the scene after recovering from a coma he’s been in because he was whacked on the head in a mugging. So he must  travel ghost town to ghost town investigating trying to figure out what’s going with the plague and what not.
Gameplay: I thought mm’s was a sub-par game mainly because it was too short (4 dungeons) and the whole time I was playing it I found myself wanting to be adult link. Yes, being adult link in Oot was gaming heaven, it touched on something that is truly awesome. So instead of going back to being little kid link we are going to start out as adult link, or at least a bad ass teenage link. The main flaws I found with Oot and Mm is that there wasn’t enough combat and the combat there was was too easy. Now this game would have the same engine and same play control (if it ain’t broke why fix it) but there would be a few more sword moves and you would be able to shoot laser beam thingies out of your sword when you are at full health. There would be a gigantic overworld, some lakes that you would have to sail across on a raft, and you could fish pretty much anywhere. There would be a lot more enemies to fight so if you wanted to go somewhere you would often have to fight your way through. Some enemies would have increased AI and they would chase you around the overworld so you would have to find a cave to hide in or something if you weren’t strong enough to take em. Also the baddies would be harder in general like those wolf guys, instead of just pawing at you they would try to jump on you and bite your head off. Rupees would be harder to come by and there would be a ton of different weapons that you could acquire from buying them or in dungeons. There would especially be more swords to get because I’m a sword freak and there would be various armor you could get, some would be bad ass with spikes on the shoulders and stuff. Also more spells would be available and you  could freeze people and pick them up and throw them off a cliff like in Alttp. The dungeons would mostly be underground but some would be in huge castles, there would be around 10 full dungeons. Some castles would be heavily guarded the guys set up shooting arrows at you and crap.  I’d make the dungeons more combat oriented, there would be puzzles too, but it would be more old school. Unlike the last several zelda games you would need all the upgrades you can get because the game is harder and you can’t just waltz through it carrying 20 potions. You could get a horse to ride around but you could also fight from your horse with sword, and take on other guys on horses. Music wouldn’t be a big part of the game, you would have a flute that could trigger some things but some secrets in the game would be less obvious like instead of having giants cracks everywhere you can bomb it would be more trial and error. There would be some funny things in the game too like being able to train a donkey and pig to ride on instead of your horse, and you could get a rusty old harmonica to play. Well let’s cut to the chase cause this is getting long. At the end of the game you eventually take on Gannon and he has that huge bad ass sword that he had in ssbm. You fight him man to man, no transforming, no bs. He is incredibly tough so not everyone will be able to beat the game. And instead of rescuing princess zelda at the end you finally just get married. That’s about it.
Extras: There is a multiplayer mode where you can fight as different characters one on one like gannon, link, evil link, hylian knights, and other baddies from the game. If you beat the game you can unlock gannon and play through the game as gannon. There is a secret mission you can unlock where you play as evil link and storm a castle full of good guys and eventually fight the king of hyrule. Anyway, that’s my idea of a good zelda game. If you would take wind waker over a game like this then we are truly from a different planet.

Hi, welcome to 90% of the fantasy games out there.

Your idea of the "Ghost Town", how is that different than Hyrule with adult link in OOT?

Not impressed.

If Miyamoto was dead, he'd be rolling in his grave, whatever that means.

I like some of your ideas, such as a more challenging and longer adventure, and a more advanced battle system.  But ghost towns?  Part of the fun of Zelda is being able to go to so many different places, just being able to explore and talk to people and see many different places - heading over to the Zoras for a while to do some diving and then running over to Death Mountain for a bit to see if you can stop that crazy rolling goron, then returning to Kakariko to hang out for a bit in the shooting range.  This feeling would be totally lost if these were all ghost towns.  The entire game would have a dread feeling to it and their would be no relaxation from the huge battles.  Besides, if the entire world was made up of decaying and death, then the tragedies would mean nothing.  I remember, in OoT, the cut-scene at Kakariko really struck me, the fire and the lightning on the normally peaceful little town, the demon breaking free of the well and flying off to do some unknown terror... if that had been a commonplace thing, I just wouldn't care.  It would have no impact.  It would just be yet another demon to kill.  It would become Diablo.

Also, I would hate an emphasis on action over puzzles.  To me, the action in Zelda games has always been more or less a diversion to the puzzles (except for the first few games, that is).  The fighting system in Zelda is fun, but it's limited for an RPG.  Sure, you can add more sword moves and spells and stuff, but it still comes down to timing your shield and slashes.  The real fun lies within the joy of exploration, the thought that around a corner might lie a whole new area you have not even seen yet, the desperate need to get that new Hookshot or Hover boots to play with.

I'm not saying there's no place for darkness in video games.  I'm just saying that that place isn't Zelda, at least not on the level you describe.  Overhearing a conversation in MM gives me more joy than beating a level 55 Greater Demon of Fire in some mindless RPG ever would.

I like some of your ideas.  I dislike some.

~10 dungeons:  agree

Music not big part of game: disagree, music is extremely important to me

action over puzzle: disagree; I'd have about the same of both

ganon difficult to beat: agree

Link and Zelda get married: disagree; way too corny

ghost towns everywhere: disagree, but I would like maybe a few ghost towns

plague killing almost everyone: disagree.. maybe many people, but not almost everyone

baddies harder to beat: agree

flute used to trigger things: agree

horse mounted fighting: agree

rupees less common and weapons to buy: agree.  I remember saving up 900 rupees in LA to buy a bow, and saving up 900 rupees takes a while.. imagine if you had a big selection of weapons, depending on how far you are in a game, that are very expensive.  it would feel nice once you finally saved up enough.. in Wind Waker until I finally got the 5000 rupee upgrade, there were too many times when I would be carrying full rupees and getting a bunch of rupees I couldn't carry; they were too easy to come by.

extras you mentioned: meh.. they sound silly, but maybe, just maybe, they would turn out good

graphics: it would depend.. "realistic" graphics might look weird in Zelda if they weren't done well.  I liked the cel-shading in WW, but if it was a very serious game.. maybe cel-shading wouldn't work well.  Perhaps if we could have cel-shading, but with slightly less chibi character designs.

Well I didn't spend too much time thinking up the plot (like 2 seconds) so there would probably be some places that were unaffected and weren't ghost towns. The whole game wouldn't be doom and gloom, but it would have a dark feel to it overall.

Tell you what.  Go make your own game.  Just don't assaciate the name Zelda with it at all, as what you are describing is NOT a Zelda game.

yes, what you are saying is a good game, but it is not Zelda.  Puzzles are first and foremost one of the major zelda themes.  without them, the game would be just hack and slash.  Also music is very very important.  I dont think you should be able to buy weapons because... you get those in the dungeons, they are your rewards for working hard.  Imagine in OoT if you bought the Boomerang.  It would have been akward.  Dont quite agree with shooting stuff either, well the master sword at full power yes, but enemies shooting at you, no.  I say this because zelda is sorta a calm game, and if you were being shot at you would have to be ruinning around like crazy instead of relaxing.  Ganon, shouldnt be so hard not everyone can beat him, it is a kids game to dont forget, but he could be a bit harder.  The thing with giant cracks is CLASSIC ZELDA.  Dont you remember getting all exicted at the first time you blew those cracked walls to bits and discovered hidden rooms, i wouldn't take that away.  Zelda is a game you are SUPPOSED to beat without to much trouble.  It is an adventure that is fun and mystical.  Your game is too dark.  Zelda has always been bright and happy.  Your game is good, but isn't the good ol' adventure we are used to.

I basically agree with Grey Ninja, though perhaps not so harsh.
As for Wind Waker not being serious. . . I'm only about halfway through the game, I think, but it seems pretty darn serious.  Oh, and the coma thing. . . that's silly.  After defeating the ultimate evil a mugger does you in. . . I think not.  Besides, according to Wind Waker (you seem to be ignoring wind waker, but I'll mention it anyway) Link never goes back to Hyrule, and bad stuff happens.

You must be outside of your mind looking at yourself!  If you think that that is the perfect Zelda game your sadly mistaken.  It may be inside your little world but to true gamers its not.  Whats up with that "migging" and "ghost towns", come on lets be realistic here okay.
