Gamecube Revisited
« on: April 23, 2009, 07:36:21 PM »
I've recently been hanging out at this girls house alot and all she has at her house was a SNES & a GC.
she only had three games and only one of them would even work consistently (the other 2 were badly scratched by relatives), so I brought over my GC collection (~50+ games) so that we could play them. She has 2 daughters, only one is old enough to know how to play

Not sure how many of you know this, but I would normally buy alot of games(mostly on sale) to just collect the good/interesting one but not actually play them. I would loan most of them to my other friend who had kids(he was a stay-at-home dad) so that the kids would stay out of his hair a little bit everyday.

Anyway, back to the point. I've only really played through a handful of the games I own, so now I've been going back to the ones I put down for various reasons many many, years ago. Some I have enjoyed beating, while others reminded me why I put them down in the 1st place.

I've recently just beaten:
X-Men Legends (started in middle)
X-Men Legends II (from beginning)
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (from beginning)
Super Mario Sunshine (near the end)
Mario Kart Double Dash (in the middle)
Ultimate Spiderman (from beginning)
Soul Calibur II (from beginning)
Super Monkey Ball (from beginning)
Super Monkey Ball 2 (from beginning)

While I enjoyed most of those games, there are two games on there that I never want to pick up again.
Mario Kart DD & SMS. I was extremely annoyed with both of those games, and before beating either of them, I have played superior version that make those games less enjoyable to play afterwards.

I even got her to get into a few games:
Beyond Good & Evil (she beat it)
NFL Blitz 2003
Animal Crossing (her & her oldest daughter can't get enough of it)

Next up on my list of games to finish;
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes  <--- currently playing (from beginning)
TLoZ: Wind Waker <--- currently playing (near the end)
Battalion Wars <--- currently playing (from beginning)
Geist
Metal Arms: Gltich in the System
Viewtiful Joe 1 (& 2 if I can finish the 1st)
Pikmin
F-Zero GX
Paper Mario TTYD
XIII

Knowing that some of you have played & beat most of these already, what do you all think of these games? do you still play any of them? any games I should be on the lookout for in the bargain bins?
Here is a list of most of the games I own IGN Collection List
sorry I don't know how to filter in just the GC games

I find it weird that most of my gaming time is 99% spent on the GC when I have a perfectly capable Wii sitting at home (going to go buy MadWorld tomorrow).
Does anybody still play their GC games? if yes, then which ones?

Why couldn't I have this much fun with my GC (Panasonic Q actually) when it was still new?

edit: forgot to add Battalion Wars to currently playing list

I can understand MK:DD. I loved it at the time, but after playing Mario Kart DS I couldn't go back and play it because the controls seemed so bad. I couldn't disagree more on Super Mario Sunshine though, it's still a great game.

I just beat the New Play Control! version of Pikmin (I hadn't played the GameCube version sine 2003) and it's still a great game. I prefer Pikmin 2, but the first os a great game and a under-rated RTS style game. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was one of my favorite GCN games and re-played it several times. I missed the world in Paper Mario, but in every other way the sequel improved on it (like giving your partner HP instead of being knocked out after 1 hit, and the Glitz Pit was terrific and I ended up going back to it after beating the game and spending hours there). F-Zero GX was pretty fun, but brutally difficult. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was the first Zelda game I beat and there is a reason it is one of the best selling Zelda games. I rented but never beat Viewtiful Joe, I loved it but got stuck later in the game.

I never finished Wind Waker because of the out to sea triforce hunt. booooring. That is where I stopped back then and now where I have to pick up from and finish.

SMS annoyed me. I'm not saying it wasn't fun(at times), but the camera constantly pissed me off & FLUDD should have been an accessory to help Mario in addition to his skills. Not replace some of his skillz. It wasn't a bad game, it just annoyed me alot to play it. If I had realized I quit only 4 stars away from the end, I might have kept playing way back in the day. I think I finished the game with only 84 stars & I have no intentions of going back in to find the rest.

MK: DD is definitely the worst Mario kart to date. They should have just upgraded MK64, but they took away something that just changed the game for me. The hop to power slide being one of those things. The rest I can't quite put a finger on, but that game was just missing something that made MK64 & MKDS so special.

Viewtiful Joe. that game if hard. I think I'm at level 4, but I quit playing it so long ago because I couldn't get past the room with the chandelier. I tried to play it again from that point, but I've forgotten the basics of the game, so I need to start over, then continue where I left off after I get the controls under...umm... control.

Metroid Prime 2 - I just never even played this one, and I'm not sure why cause I really liked the first one. I'm not very far into it yet, but it will be beaten so that I can continue on to #3 for Wii (also considering getting the sequel to XML on Wii - Marvel Alliance?)

Double Dash's partner system allowed for quite a bit of strategy when using and/or planning to use weapons. That, as well as the character-specific weapons, are something that is greatly missed in other installments.

DD is the worst in the series.

That's impossible, Super Circuit is from the bowels of hell. It actually has worse controls then the SNES game, which is amazing. And I liked Sunshine a lot more after I finally beat it five years after I bought it, but it was still way too "samey" level-to-level. Galaxy was the real true sequel to SM64.

Overall though, I have a real fondness for the Gamecube, and I have more games for it than anything else. Zelda Four Swords FTW!

DD may not be worse then Super Circuit but it's the worst of the console games for sure.

I'm never going to put my GameCube away as it has my favourite game on any system ever: Super Smash Brothers Melee.

I still play other games too though, and I also buy a few games every now and then because there is a lot which I missed out on. Lately I've been playing the Mario games because the system has so many and they are all decent/good.

Mario Kart Double Dash!! is the only other Mario Kart game I can actually stand. I'd have to say that Super Mario Kart is the worst in the series, not because it is a bad game but just because it has aged like a pile of dirty laundry.

I'd suggest playing Battalion Wars next, that game is all kinds of awesome.

Super Circuit? Is that the GB Mario Kart?
Never played it. But I do agree that Super Mario Kart has not aged that well, and seems very ancient compared to my favorite MK64 (MKDS & WKWii are both good too though).

What is really sad, is that I spent alot of money to get the Panasonic Q and barely played any GC games on it. 80% of the time that thing was on, it was playing a DVD movie.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is not X-Men Legends 3 anymore than Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universer is Mortal Kombat 7.
The both look the same, they both play the same, so I'm condsidering it a sequel.
instead of just the X-Men/Brotherhood, it now involves the whole Marvel universe.
What reason do you have for not considering it a sequel?

Mario Kart 64 is by far the worst of all the Mario Karts. Long and uninventive tracks remove any sort of enjoyment out of the game. Skyscraper in battle mode is the only fun to be had.

Double Dash is probably my second favourite of the Mario Karts after MKWii. I liked the double characters and exclusive items and the game has some of the best and memorable tracks in the entire series.

SMS felt tedious to me and I played it before 64 (which I find too messy because of the level design) and Galaxy. I don't mind the move reduction in SMS though, there's no need for those tons of different jumps.

Block Fort is fucken trash and a perfect example of everything that is wrong with Mario Kart 64; it's too big, feels too slow, takes too long and is too empty.

You two are trippin. Block Fort for is THE best battle map from Mario Kart.
Its wide open with plenty of places to run to & nowhere to really hide.
You don't even have to slow down to set traps, and nail some one with a green shell (I always played with the NO red shell rule) from the top floor.
I only wish you could play Block fort with more than 4 players.

Block Fort would be good with MKWii's 12 players, but I think there is a similar track isn't there?

There is no fun in only seeing other competitors once in every match. It takes about a minute to travel from one side to the other not to mention to different stories. The only time I ever lose balloons is when I get fed from boredom and fire green shells into the wall at myself.

The truth is Mario Kart 64 was only made as a chance to show off the 64's new power with it's large, open 3D tracks, but they failed to fill it with anything substantial.

MK64 is an awesome game and well complimented the split screen madness of Goldeneye. DD is a dumbed down version and is the red-headed step child. The only thing cool about it is the LAN play that Nintendo seems to have forgotten.

Sounds like whoever you were playing with sucked at MK64. I would play 2 player and we would constantly be chasing each other on the top levels, mid levels and on the ground floor. We would set traps with shells & bananas and try to steer the other player towards them. I easily spent half of my multiplayer time with that game in Block Fort. It is the best battle map they have created so far, & I could only imagine how fun it would be with 6-12 players at the same time.

Either way, I'm to go play MP2 Echoes. I pretty sure I've never played this game before, but some of it so far seems so familiar. Are parts of the level designs in MP2 the same as MP?
