Why would I buy a laptop when I can get one for free?

How does that stand up in direct comparison to the one that kept melting on you?

Those are some pretty decent specs. I would say 17.3" at 1600x900 isn't very good, but it's better than what you already had. Trading up a (weak ass) C2D 5250 for a C2Q 9000 is quite an upgrade on it's own. The only thing you *may* have an issue with is the old system problem had 32-bit Vista, and this one has 64-bit. You might find some compatibility issues every now and then, only if you're using old ass software, or something written to run in a 16-bit environment. Congratulations.

Bah, they're refunding the original repair ($291) but still holding out on a replacement...

So after everything I got a $200 discount, the $291 back, and have 14 day to return for an absolute refund if I want or find a better laptop....
I can still save some more if I sell the old one on ebay

Couple of problems with that ignoring the fact that it has a nvidia card. It's not at my store or any other one with in 20 miles and I have a 8 paper paper I need to write due on Monday. Even if I did order it online there is no way that I can con the store into giving me a the 7811(1200p) instead of the 7805(900p) like you did apparently because they don't have that either. Lastly, after the discount my laptop cost just $10 more than the gateway anyway.

The biggest problem I having with the laptop is windows 64bit fucking up **** (mostly shell-integration) that worked in 32bit. (anyone know how to fix thumbnails for codec not included in windows done with cccp)

Occasionally they're good for finding videos with random names and it looks bad that some do have them and some don't...
