damn computers suck! damn root virus! it put some shady files on my flash drive and i couldn't boot up linux! exil evil!!!!!
luckily i figured out which files they were and am running linux again. I miss my days taking d courses, we used nothing but macs, with the best of programs. They only screwed up when we pushed them too hard, which is reasonable, im barely doing crap on this pc and its pissing me off on every end, at least it works decently in linux, but i can't access my hard drive..booo

I don't know whether to laugh, rage, or cry. Less than a day after Bestbuy installs the 3rd motherboard, the GPU melts on their system test. Now I have to wait for a forth motherboard to arrive.

Damn it, I'd rather have a piece of crap than a nVidia GPU/graphics card; at lease crap is flushable....

Or just get a non-HP, that doesn't have the defective chipset in it. Make them upgrade you to the...Gateway FX P7805u, if they have any in stock.

HP's dvxxxx series is screwed up. I had some kind of dv9000 and it fried on me last year, something related to the power consumption. HP had built the model wrong, and so the warranty was extended, and I received what was essentially a replacement. This year, just a week ago, the same issue happened, but this was with the hardware "fixed," and the warranty didn't cover it. In the end, the two computers only lasted almost four years, but didn't quite make it.

My roommate got a later dv version, likely the same one you have, stevey, back in, let's say... 2007, and his video/graphics card (by nVidia,) melted on him, as well. He said the computer was out of warranty, and nVidia said that HP was supposed to cover all defective hardware, while HP said it wasn't a problem with their hardware, so it was nVidia's fault. In the end he got it repaired, and his family uses it. He wound up getting a pretty good deal on newegg for an acer aspire, and I did the same thing when mine broke, as well. I'm happy with it for everything except Vista, which is probably the worst OS you can imagine, almost as if MS wanted to see how many ways they could annoy a user.

Yeah, it's a dv9640us. It's on the high end (what I had though meant high quality and long lasting) of the dvXXXX pavilion laptops, thus HP thinks I'm full of money and will pay full repair cost or buy a new one

I have an asus eee pc, on a linux variant called easy peasy. Works fine for me.

Any GPU that ends in 400 or 600 is crap anyway. An 8800 is better than a 9400 or 9600. Get my laptop, I'm constantly trying to get people to buy it. It was $900 on Tiger Direct the other day. You can get it on bestbuy.com I believe - check the reviews - over 250 of them, IIRC, with a 4.7 rating (out of 5). Gateway FX p7805u. It's got an nVidia card, but not the faulty one that HP seems to keep using - a 1GB 9800M GTS, never had a single issue with it.

Ask if you can just take the hard drive out. If they're sending you a refurb, have them send you one that's been tested and whatnot, but the HDD removed, if possible. I swapped out my laptop at Best Buy for the demo unit (better screen), and they simply swapped HDDs for me.

Hey guess what - the ATI GPU in my work's laptop blew up the other day! I bought a replacement today, with an nVidia 8200 chipset. It's for work, so I'm not expecting mind-blowing graphics, but it does get a 4.3 in gaming graphics, which is pretty good for a $529 laptop.

Seriously, get my laptop. It's nVidia, but it is not affected by the problems that the lower end chips had. If you can find it here at Tiger Direct, then grab one. It sells for $750 (when in stock), which is $340 than Best Buy has it for now. Read the reviews (93 of them on tigerdirect.com, nearly 300 on bestbuy.com), it's an amazing deal, even at the $1150 asking price. If you get it for $750 you could even buy a T9800 Core 2 Duo for about $300 and put it in there, giving you an amazing 3.06 dual core CPU with 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, and 1GB GeForce 9800 for about $1100. BUY IT.
