Help? Problems reading discs when booting up my Wii.
« on: April 14, 2009, 09:45:58 PM »
I've been having issues with the Wii's disc drive. When I turn the console on with a game already inserted the console isn't recognizing there's a game in there. The game channel shows nothing is inserted. When I click the channel the GC/Wii discs spin, although I'm not sure if they do that when a game isn't inserted.

If I eject the disc and reinsert it nothing happens still. I've tried inserting other games to see if it was a bad disc, but it seems like the same issue occurs with any of the games.

The disc drive doesn't seem to spin up, so it's almost like the Wii isn't trying to read the disc. This issue seemed to crop up right after I installed the SD card update.

My workaround right now is to either unplug the Wii and turn it back on or turn the console on and off a few times. It's getting pretty annoying.

I've had my Wii for about 8 months now, no pets and I don't smoke. I doubt there's a lot of dust in there. Would this be a symptom of a dusty Wii? Anyone else have this issue? Should I call Nintendo or try the disc cleaner first?

Sometimes this happens to me. I just reset the Wii and it recognizes the disc.

I'd go to Nintendo's tech support site about that. There are a number of people having this issue and they are working on a fix for it.

http://techforums.nintendo.com/nins/board/message?board.id=wii_tech&thread.id=24000

They recommend calling their support number: 1-800-255-3700 -- 6 AM to 7 PM, Pacific, seven days a week.

Just called Nintendo, they said they want me to ship the console to be repaired. It's still under warrenty until July so it'll be a free repair for me. Hopefully it isn't too long of a wait, the Wii has been my main gaming console for a while now (my Xbox 360 has been collecting dust).

I'll be using my DSi to fill my gaming needs while I wait.

I wonder if the laser lens needs a cleaning. That's the one thing I liked about the GameCube's design, that the lens could be cleaned easily without some hassle like sending your system off for "repair".

Aren't there special 'discs' you can insert into your Wii that can clean in there? Or am I jumbling this up with the old cartridge cleaning kits?

I think something like that has come out in Japan, not America though (I could be mistaken).

Well they should release a cleaning kit because it is a big concern of mine. A vacuum can only do so much.

The kit was released some time ago - I saw it in a GameStop about a month ago at least.

Ha ha, I'll bet it was $15 at GameStop.

Awesome sauce, I'll have to get one of those. But not from GameStop! :P

I don't think my issue is because of dust. The disc drive isn't spinning up when the console turns on.

Actually I unplugged everything to flip the console over to look at the serial number. I just replugged the console in to write down what WiiWare/VC games I purchased and things seem to be working fine now. When I turn the console on the drive makes a DIRNT noise and it spins up and reads the game.

Now I'm having doubts about whether or not to send it off. Althought it's probably good to do it just to be safe..

If not now then at least do it before your warranty expires.

Is the system placed horizontal or vertical? There was once when my system made some serious clunk noises whilst it was placed vertically (even though it still loaded up and everything), and ever since then I've had it horizontal. After all, there's no need to defy the laws of physics.

I had mine vertical for the first 5 months I owned the console, but ended up switching it to horizontal due to space issues. I've had it that way for a few months.

I ended up having my problem again, so I just mailed it out through FedEx. Hopefully the turnaround time is fast.

That's a pretty good turnaround time. I'm in Florida and they're having me ship it to New York so I'm guessing I'll see my console sometime late next week or early 2 weeks from now.

Did they keep all your saved data on the console? Nintendo made a note that they would try as I have WiiShop purchases on it.

All my saves were in tact.
they did suggest that i back everything up onto an SD card though just incase
& as long as your Wii is tied to your My Nintendo account, you shouldn't have to worry about anything from the WiiShop channel.

The saves of games with an online mode can't be copied, and this is one example of why that's a bad thing.

Wow that's a really good turn around time. Did you send it out to replace the drive? How far from where you live did you send it to?

The problem with my Wii was that it couldn't read Wii disks but could read GC disks. I'm think it was sent up to Washington.I live in Southern California. Also I managed to get a overnight label for return so once they got done repairing it I got it back the next day.

But they have a repair center in LA thats why you got your back so quick. You could of dropped it off in person and picked it up when it was done. Probably all in the same day if you wanted to. When I was on the phone with the guy at Nintendo he said if I lived close enough I could drop it off and probably get it back even faster.

I'm curious whether you really got your Wii back or if they just copied the memory into a new one.
