20 years ago.Wow. I was 8 years old.I remember getting my Gameboy.Tetris was bundled with the system.I played that alot.A few other games I remember having was Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 2.I beat the game.I was happy.Dr.Mario was one of my favorite games.I could get up to the 16th stage from the begining.TMNT:Fall of the Foot clan was fun.I knew all of the secrets in the game. Super Mario Land I made it to the end and beat Tanaka.Link's Awaking is probably my favorite Zelda handheld game.I liked all of the mario referances.Figuring how to get through the Wind Fishes Egg was a nice way to use tools in the game that you wouldn't expect. The final battle was nice.
After that it is fuzzy till Pokemon. I remember having spent lots of time with Pokemon Blue.My friend had Red.I was a pretty big fan of Pokemon. If I recall it wasn't talked about till I showed it off to people.I created a nice circle of friends that enjoyed the game.I enjoyed battling and trading with them.

Actually, April 21 is the 20th anniversary (it released in Japan on April 21, 1989).

I turned 3 the month after it launched in the US. My first Game Boy was the Game Boy Pocket, I later bought a Game Boy Classic as a collectors item basically. I only owned a handful of original GB games:
The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Juggernauts
Pokemon Red/Pokemon Blue/Pokemon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition
Tetris

I had a Gameboy pocket.Really nice system. I had a "Play it loud" Gameboy.I had the clear one. The one that you could see the insides of it. Thank you for reminding me I did have Pokemon Yellow as well as G,S,C.Fun games.

This honestly makes me feel really old.  The NES is old but I don't distinctly remember when it came into existence.  I honestly just went to my first day of kindergarten and a whole shitload of kids had an NES and I didn't.  So I didn't really think of when it debuted or what life was like before it.  It was just this thing that other kids had that I didn't.  No surprise since my Mom had done a good job of sheltering me from anything, you know, FUN.  In retrospect my Mom did a fantastic job of making sure I was a uncool the second I entered elementary school.  Thanks Mom, but I digress.

The Gameboy however was the first Nintendo system I distinctly remember knowing about before release.  There was buzz in the classroom about it.  Ads on TV.  Coverage of it in Nintendo Power.  It seemed significant because we all previously just knew videogames as "playing Nintendo" and now Nintendo was expanding beyond the NES.  Yeah I knew about Sega but at the time they seemed like an inferior Nintendo knock-off.  Nintendo was the standard and it was like there would be only one Nintendo.  So this Gameboy with different games in a different format seemed strange.

Because I can remember when it came out though it makes me feel very old to note that 20 years have gone by.  I can remember when my cousin got a Gameboy in Christmas 1989.  Now he's married and is expecting his first kid.  And he's younger than me.  ****. :)

But I never had a Gameboy as you could probably guess from the description of my mother in the first paragraph.

Well Ian as I was telling Stratos when he turned older. It doesn't matter how old you are as long as you are having fun.
You never had the original Gameboy? Have you had other versions of it such as GBP,GBC or GBA?

We can be grumpy old men together :)

I remember opening my Brick with it's pack in Tetris on my bed when I was little. I got Mario Land and Mario Land 2 for Christmas one year I remember. I also had both Yoshi and Yoshi Cookie as well. F-1 Race, Donkey King Land, Pokemon Blue and Star Wars. I remember being frustrated because you needed two games to play multiplayer. Back in the day you didn't have no fancy single-card play, and you had to walk up hill both ways in the rain and snow to play with a friend! No snazzy Wi-Fi connection then either.

A few years later my parents also got a Brick for my little sister because we took a lot of long car trips to visit grandparents. But my parents would never buy her the same games as me because they thought we could just trade them. So the only crossover title we had was Tetris and Pokemon (different versions of course). I remember she had a Barbi game called GameGirl (LOL) and one of the Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle games. I remember once in highschool I found an actual GameBoy game chip in the tennis court. I predicted it was a pokemon game that was hated on. I pulled apart her Crazy Castle game (with her permission of course, she had given me most of her games at that point anyway) and I replaced it with the mangled ROM chip. I had to wedge the battery back in the case as well but when I booted it up it was a copy of Pokemon Silver. Still works too. Not a bad find to complement by copy of Gold.

We talking about the Pocket and Color too or just The Brick?

I still have both of our Bricks but neither of them work.

I didn't get to fully play Link's Awakening (my favorite Zelda game) until the DX edition.

I remember borrowing Super Mario Land 2 from a neighbor.I found a discarded Original Game Boy.I remember playing through all of the levels.A little fun fact.In Nintendo Power the game was on its Power Charts for 90 months. That is the record.

Stratos this is about the 20th anniversary of the original but I suppose we can talk about the entire GB line.
The GB line left a great legacy.

I remember the Power Charts. Wasn't Link's Awakening also near the top of that as well? I remember the 007 game and Pokemon also dominated as well.

I think Link's Awakining had 72 months.
Pokemon had 60 months. In a more recent time SSBM had 40 months.

I remember voting every month and getting excited when my picks moved up the charts. I also remember voting on under dog games to hopefully tell Nintendo I liked them and wanted more like them. Games I thought were overrated on the charts I would not vote at all or put lower on my ranking.

Brick, Color, Regular GBA and an SP. I missed out on the Pocket because by the time I could have gotten it I heard the Color was around the corner so I held out.

Sadly my Color was stolen but I still have all the others. I would really like to get a Micro.

Yeah, I loaned my Color to a friend back in high school since I was sitting pretty with a GBA but he took it to school and someone stole it from his backpack. Bummer there. I'm especially hoarding the GBA and SP because I might eventually gather enough to play 4 player Crystal Chronicles and Four Swords.

At most I've gotten three people playing together but not for long. Two is usually the best I can do.

Too lazy to type them out right now so here's a link to them.

I thought I had more but that appears to be it. I borrowed a lot more during that era as well.

Yeah I got all caught up when I got GBA.  Though I actually had experienced some classic Gameboy games during high school using a certain practice of questionable legality. ;)  I ended up buying all the ones I put serious playtime into anyway so it all worked out.

Link's Awakening is my favourite game of all time but I didn't end up playing it until at least five years after it came out.  Funny how these things work out.

I do not have a favorable opinion of Golden Sun. I think the game is ridiculously overrated by fanboys.

You and me both. I love the Ballad of the Windfish. Did you hear the version of it that was created for Brawl but wasn't included in the final game? It is wonderful. I play it all the time.

They have a lot of good stuff on there.

There is a whole collection of "Brawl Lost Tracks" that were not in the final game.
