Your Top 5 most wanted for the GB/GBA DSi service.
« on: March 24, 2009, 05:20:23 PM »
since the service has pretty much been confirmed:

Quote
Nintendo called Kombo up today and requested that it be known that some of the above information is not officially announced for North America and as a result, may not be completely accurate.

Specifically, they told us that you will not be able to play GB and GBA games directly from your SD memory card. Also, downloadable GB and GBA games have not officially been announced for North America (only Japan, so far).

Nintendo is holding their GDC 2009 key note speech tomorrow. Expect to be informed of the complete capabilities of DSi tomorrow. As always, Kombo will keep you updated.

what 5 games do you most want on the service?

1. Pokemon Silver
2. Metroid 2
3. Advance Wars
4. Pokemon Blue
5. Metroid Fussion (my copy is teh broken)

Special mention: Golden Sun, never played it but heard really good things about it.

Shantae would be nice to play so we could see how good it really is.

I'd rather they remade the Gold and Silver similar to what they did with FireRed and Leaf Green (or even better all new games that allowed you to catch the monsters from G/S/C). I want the games to be compatible with the current sets and as we have seen in the past, VC titles don't get overhauls like this.

Special mention: Golden Sun, never played it but heard really good things about it.

It's not all that special so don't worry, your not missing much. The only reason you've heard good things is because it was a launch title and early pickings on the GBA were pretty slim.

My number one most wanted game would be Mario Tennis for the GBC. I'd also like to see Donkey Kong '94, the Zelda Oracle games, and the Game & Watch Gallery series.

Oh hell that game... It ended like 1/3rd into the story.

Though I know it will never happen, I want to see FaceBall 2000 because other people need to experience the awesomity of that game. Interestingly, it had 16-player multiplayer long before the advent of the online gaming system...

Metroid 2 is the worst game in the series by far. I actually don't think I would mind a remake of that game even if all it did was colourize the game, add a map, and require less missiles to beat the final enemy.

I always wanted Faceball solely for the 16-player aspect. I'm thinking a new version as a DSi app could have severely awesome potential if you could include both local Wi-Fi and online features.

I just got Metroid 2 off of eBay and played it for a small bit, but I'm holding off on really playeing it until it wins RetroActive so I can play along.

FaceBall.  Heh.

Metroid 2 is a pretty awesome game.

Of course, my list would look something like this:
1.) The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
2.) The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
3.) The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
4.) The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
5.) The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX

Here's my two questions regarding this - Will we get multi-player support?  If so, I'd love to see Four Swords re-released (actually a DSiWare version would be better).

Also... why isn't anyone talking about Game Gear games? :)

Virtual Boy Wario Land.

No, it's not for GB/GBA, it's the only "portable" game I don't have that I'd care to buy through this service (and it'll save me $70+ on ebay). Otherwise, I'll stick with new downloadable games... Of course, if Nintendo were to get Sega to jump on board with Game Gear games, specifically the ones that Sega never brought to North America which were like, what, all of the good/interesting ones (namely Phantasy Star Gaiden), I'd be at least... okay, not that much more interested, but a little more interested.

Too slow. :P

Ever since people were talking about a downloadable service for the DS including GB/GBC/GBA titles, I always thought it was a little odd no one suggested any other portable systems...

I think it's because we are taking it step by step. Since the DSi was announced we hope that they include a VC service for old Nintendo games. Once that is confirmed then we move on to clamoring for non-Nintendo systems. People demanding other systems will grow as we increase our understanding of what this service is going to entail.

Besides, aren't the Master System and the Game Gear considered one and the same on the VC? Like the Master system Sonic game is actually the same as the Game Gear one? That's the impression I got from people on other sites when the first Sonic on Master System came out.

The only one that's worth a second look is Game Gear since GBC/GBA slaughtered the Wonderswan and Neo Geo Pocket and neither of which had that many terribly interesting games. The only games that I recall having any interest in on WS were the Final Fantasy remakes which are on everything now. FF I and II have been remade twice since then (well, I guess the GBA versions were WS ports). I am somewhat interested in Sonic Pocket Adventure.

Honestly, this service doesn't intrigued me too much. Before GBA, a vast majority of the more memorable portable games were made by Nintendo and I already have the ones I want. If I ever felt an itch of nostalgia, I can break out the old SP and go nuts. Anyone who missed Link's Awakening should buy that day one. It was well ahead of its time and I'm still amazed that Nintendo somehow made that game on the original brick Gameboy.

Yeah, I loved Link's Awakening. That is by far my favorite Zelda game. I love the Ballad of the Windfish.

Indeed I did play the DX version, and would recommend it over the original primarily because it's in color, not for the extra dungeon really :P

For the uninitiated, the extra dungeon is a rather underwhelming affair that occurs only after the main adventure has already been completed.  You are rewarded with a choice between two pretty nifty items a blue tunic that halves the damage you take or a red tunic that double the damage you give but since the game is already over they're really just for funsies.

It's been years of course, and I don't really remember the extra dungeon all that well...I *think* it was just a few rooms of color based gimmicks, but I'm not positive...I played the main game many times, but only that dungeon once haha.

It's been a while since I played Link's Awakening, but I'm pretty sure you can access the Doungeon of Colour long before you beat the game. If I remember right, here's how you can open it: After you get the running shoes, you can go to the library and dash into a bookcase to cause the book on the top to fall. It will tell you the order in which you need to move the headstones in the graveyard to access the dungeon.

All this Link's Awakening talk makes me want to play it again. I think it is on the RetroActive list so I hope it comes up soon.
>That's a hint to bump it up the list if you read this, Jonny! ;)

One thing that I notice a lot of 'Zelda retrospective/timelines' miss is that Link's Awakening is a direct sequel to Link to the Past. It is explained as such in the games manual which I still have somewhere. Though removing that I have heard a good thought that it takes place while Link is sleeping during his time trapped in the Temple of Time in Ocarina.

I really can't think of many other GB/C/A games that I would like to see on the service that I don't already own.

Maybe the Donkey Kong Lands since I never got the second or third ones.
The Wario Lands I completely missed.

Sorta what he said-

You can enter the dungeon as long as:
A.)You have the power bracelet (needed to move the tombstones).
B.)You are alone (Game gives you a message and refuses entry if you're with BowWow, Marin or the Ghost).
C.)You're playing on a GameBoy Color/Advance/Player.

Basically, after you complete level 2, as you get the power bracelet in Level 2, but you're attached to BowWow until you complete the level.

I see...in that case, the items are a little more useful!  Of course, I still wouldn't have used the items during the course of the game since they would have given me an unfair advantage :)

OH YEAH.  I was reminded of this by the 2008 Talkback thread, of all places...MARIO KART SUPER CIRCUIT.

Of course, with MKDS out with true 3D courses and wireless/online muliplayer I can see why people would hesitate to buy this, but in my opinion no other Mario Kart has been able to surpass this installment.  The courses are brilliant despite being completely flat, the controls are spot on, and the item balancing the most fair of any iteration of the series.  Plus it has coins.

COINS

Also the music is fantastic.

I think you can open the extra dungeon after beating either the second or third dungeon in the game.

You get an awesome choice of either defense or offense after beating the dungeon, which is a very gimmicky dungeon based on color, but still fun.

My only problem is the extra dungeon done ahead of time can make the game too easy...specially if you take the defensive item which basically gives you twice the hearts...

What is nice is you can re-enter the dungeon and switch items at any time, which allows you to play with both.  A very cool bonus.
