I'm surprised you didn't mention Rare and Nintendo splitting ways. Jumping into Microsoft's arms no less. That was kind of a big deal...

Your right, that was pretty soon after Adventures came out.

I loved the Test of Fear. For one it had raptors, the coolest things ever, and it was a very unique occurrence. I actually wish the game had more of that type of event. It was pretty crazy.
Combine the Test of Fear and the Sanity meter from Eternal Darkness. That would be sweet.

I thought Adventures was a good game. It just had an anti-climactic ending. Dinosaur Planet should probably stayed a separate property from the Star Fox series.

Yeah, the Rare-Nintendo split up kind of seems like an oversight on our part. But the debates over Wind Waker don't really have a place in the 2002 write-up, IMO.

Why doesn't Wind Waker - Celda talk have a place there? Wasn't it at E3 2002 that the cel-look was revealed? Or are you saving it for the year the game released?

I think the fact that nobody mentioned the fact that the Rare defection isn't in there during editing speaks volumes about how the deal is perceived nowadays.  Rare has dropped off the face of the map.

I actually remembered the Rare fiasco when I mentioned Starfox Adventures.

The Rare thing was surprising to say the least. I remember back in the day fans were so upset that Gamestop received used Rare games, and all of a sudden it was cool to hate Rare.

Rare had issues, just like any company. But just because they moved to MS it doesn't change the fact that many of their games were great, and hating them because they moved on is being childish.

Hell, I still enjoy their efforts today!

I didn't even really care much back then because I seen the signs that they were losing their touch. It didn't shock me Nintendo was willing to let them go.

More or less. We alluded to the controversy when talking about SpaceWorld 2000 ("This would have deep ramifications for the series, which—much to the chagrin of some gamers—went on to adopt a very different visual style.") and the 2003 GotY ("While the polarizing effect of its 'toon shading' arguably led to the visual style of Twilight Princess...").

I think the Rare issue came because they haven't been relevant for many years. Their last game while a second party for Nintendo was Star Fox Adventures, a game hated by both reviewers and fans. They continued making games that either got poor reviews, poor sales, or both. I think the only game from them in the last 8 years I have liked was "Conker: Live and Reloaded" (which was basically just a better looking version of "Conker's Bad Fur Day").

I can't decide if I want to get the N64 Conker or wait until I buy an old Xbox and get that version.

I liked Star Fox Adventures. It had a lot of good moments and decent potential. The only thing that I really didn't like was how the end boss was completely unoriginal. That was an anti-climactic let down.

Go with the Nintendo 64 version because it's, well, the original and best. Believe it.
Strangely enough, the XBox version has more censorship than the N64 version. You'd think the censorship is something they would have removed in the XBox version, or at least not add to. The multiplayer mode was also axed in favour of a new type of multiplayer (with online play I believe) so also look into that when you go to make a decision.

The XBox version sold worse than the N64 version. This just goes to show something, though I'm not sure what...

StarFox Adventures was I game I thought I liked when I was first playing it.  But it has the worst aftertaste in gaming history.  Every time I look back on it, the worse my impression of it gets, and my fury incrementally increases.

The game's only lasting positive legacy was the introduction of THE PRINCESS KRYSTAL (Hawtness Planet) into the Nintendo family.  She was the first step that showed Nintendo games were meant for everyone, and not just Pokemans kiddies.

That sultry saxophone part when Fox sees Krystal was awful.

Yeah that scene would improve greatly if characters other than Krystal weren't present at all.

I thought it was so bad it was quite funny. What I liked so much about it is that it showed Fox with a lot of human emotion. Its very rare to see a Nintendo character express love, and Fox might be the only character that has done it.
