Does anyone know why the battery life is supposedly shorter in the DSi?
Probably the larger screens and the main processor is more powerful.

does anyone know if you can play music during games? (probably not, I bet) or if you can play music  with the DS closed?

Spinzilla, I haven't heard anyone mention playing their own tunes during games. The audio feature has some themed visualizers and does play music while closed. I think it stops playing if there are no headphones, which effectively cuts the DSi to being a instarocker machine, but I am not sure at the moment.

Are there any details about the SD card slot and file types that can be used aside from AAC?

AAC is the only audio type supported since it's open source. JPEGs are supported for pictures and you can sync them up to Wii's photo channel as well but I don't think you can import jpeg pictures from your PC since it wont recognize them (probably due to resolution issues).

I'm sort of hoping that the SD slot will be a secret saving grace that could allow people to personalize their systems in various ways. Would Nintendo attempt to restrict homebrew with firmware updates? This also brings my unease about the DSi- will people try to approach it as a smart device and by doing so insult the integrity of the system's main function which is to play games and may not be able to handle complicated software.

The Nintendo World Store in New York is going to have a DSi release party and are taking reservations now. I'm hoping for exclusive goodies :)

Nintendo will definitely try to restrict homebrew with firmware updates, but if the Wii is any indication they will be unsuccessful. Once the homebrew is there and I get a better picture of what we're getting with DSiWare I'll definitely be buying my 5th DS.

This is correct.  It enters sleep mode if there aren't headphone plugged in.

Does the DS Lite use the same battery as the original DS? Can you use the same AC adapter to charge up either one?

I think they use the same battery, but you can't use the same AC adapter because the jack is different.  I don't know if there are any differences other than that.

AAC is the only audio type supported since it's open source.

Ogg vorbis is open source, too, Nintendo, you jerks!

They use a different battery, the shape of the battery is different and I think the capacity is a little larger probably to accommodate the larger power demand. Also the power adapter is fatter but the charge time is cut by half an hour.

Indeed.  I was just looking at them at the Nintendo online store.  It occurs to me that someone might be able to tell something about the DSi battery by looking at the Japanese online store, if there is one.

Well there are some sites that took pictures of the DSi torn apart (they unscrewed the screws and showed the insides). Also the advantage of Lithium ion batteries for manufactures is that they could shape the how they want it to, perhaps part of the shape difference is to allow a bigger stylus to be stored in the unit.

So all we know so far is the Moving Memo Pad in terms of DSiware coming to the US.  Hopefully we get some art styles launch week.
