Retro Gaming Challenge?!
« on: February 05, 2009, 11:42:21 AM »
Hey Guys,

Anybody getting Retro Gaming Challenge? I am kind of excited about it. I had no idea the game was even coming out here! XSEED is slowly becoming one of my favorite publishers.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/gameArt.cfm?artid=16435

Does anyone have an official list of the games?

Oh I'm all over this bad boy.  Namco Bandai just released a sequel in Japan, so let's hope that XSEED localizes that one too.

I don't like that you have to unlock many of the games but I'm still getting it.

I've read a little about that show.  Is it really connected to this game, or are people just pointing out the similarities?

Amazon is shipping my stuff from weird places lately.  Usually, free shipping from the Dallas warehouse takes just a few days, sometimes as soon as two, to get to me after it actually ships, with some exceptions.  But when I really want something soon, they ship it from someplace in Indiana!  Another package is coming from Delaware.  Delaware?!  Delaware.

If I don't play this game this weekend, I'm blaming Indiana and everyone in it.

I guess that depends on where the stock is.

I can't remember the last time I ordered a non-rare video game or movie from Amazon that didn't ship from Dallas.  Books, hardware, and pretty much everything else tends to come from who knows where.  Considering Retro Game Challenge is the only thing I ordered Amazon hasn't pimped on the site or in emails, I'd guess it's the game responsible.  The question, then, is why didn't the Dallas shipping center have the stock for this order?  Was it because the game is selling faster than anticipated, Amazon didn't bother to stock much because the buyer thought he worked at GameStop thanks to blunt head trauma, or somewhere in between?

My money's on "glitch in the Matrix," personally.

Yay, finally got my copy!  It's a good sign that the first game is a Galaga clone -- I've always been unusually good at Galaga, can play for ten or fifteen minutes on one quarter.

So if anyone is curious about Game Center CX, the Japanese show that this game is based upon, there are a lot of subtitled episodes on YouTube.  Here is the hilarious first episode, in two parts:

Watching this makes me really want an American version of the show, where some masochistic host plays through Western crap-fests like E.T., Donkey Kong 64, etc.

zomg Star Prince is awesome!

I'm really enjoying this game (RGC) so far.  The writing is cute and funny, other than the letters to the magazine.  It's odd and funny seeing famous game journalists' photos in the magazine.

All the games seem to be fairly easy so far, although Haggle Man got more difficult in the last challenge.  One thing I find annoying is that you have to complete all four challenges of each game before the next game is unlocked, so it all feels very linear, and you're forced to play through every game, even if there's one you hate.  It seems like the next game should arrive after you beat 3/4 of the previous one's challenges, and then maybe there could be some token reward for the optional task of completing all the challenges.  I bet something like this has been implemented in the sequel.

Jonny to make things easier you can use codes in most of the games to get the challenges (I did that with the lame racing game). There is a code for that game that eliminates all the racers and allows you to be invincible making it SUPER EASY.

I know, but the challenges are all pretty easy anyway.  The only difficult one I've seen is the fourth challenge on Guadia Quest.  I'm now on Haggle Man 3, and holy crap it's awesome.  Ninja Gaiden + RPG elements = WIN.

Is no one else playing this wonderful game?  :-(

I finally beat the last game yesterday, so that completes the final challenge (finish every game).  Robot Ninja Haggleman 3 is definitely the most advanced and most interesting game in the bunch.  It's like Ninja Gaiden mixed with... Metroid?  Starts off really easy but gets extremely difficult towards the end.

I do though right now I'm finding the 4th challenge in Guardia Quest to be extremely tedious. These old school RPGs are horrible when it comes to mindless grinding.

I didn't get as much time with it as I'd have liked, but I did finally start the game.  So far I'm impressed that the retro games actually have some interesting ideas, like the doors and hidden stuff in Haggle Man.  They went above and beyond, and I can't wait to see what's in the rest of the games.

It feels like kind of a waste to not have any more challenges after the next game becomes available.  There should at least be extra-hard optional challenges.  I mean, the Galaga clone has 64 levels and two kinds of level warps, but the challenges only ask you to get past level 5.  Where's the challenge to reach level 64 by any means necessary?
