So, um, why do the "hardcore" people ignore the games from the fall conference?

Fixed.

That is a good question. I'd love to find out more about those NEW IPs like Dynamic Slash and the one set in space..

I'm glad to see that E3's a little bigger this year.  Kid Icarus better be there in some form!  I also hope to see Wii Motion + put to full use.

I think that will depend on what is going on with Factor 5 (Yeah I know people will say IGN was bsing but really I see no reason not to believe it).

Anyone see that supposed Kid Icarus design by Factor Five? Horrible. If Kid Icarus will be shown, I hope it looks nothing like that crap.

Yeah I don't know how I feel about Factor 5 doing Kid Icarus.  Yeah Nintendo gave Metroid to a western dev and it turned out great BUT Metroid always had a more western look anyway.  So Retro's western graphics design fits Metroid really well.  And even if you don't like that R&D1 still made a new Japanese Metroid and a remake as well, so even the most picky Metroid fan had something to like.

Kid Icarus looks more Japanese to me.  Maybe that sounds crazy but a more western design wouldn't fit it as well.  It has Eggplant Wizards for pete's sake!  That's Japanese character design 101 right there!  Meanwhile Metroid is using alien designs inspired by the American flim Alien.  And unlike with Metroid I don't think some 2D Kid Icarus is showing up on the DS as a sort of "safety net".  (Wouldn't that be cool by the way?  2D Kid Icarus with non-8-bit visuals?)

Now that's all graphics which isn't quite as important as gameplay (though I think it's still important to establish mood and atmosphere).  But Factor 5 is hit-or-miss and their last game was really bad.  Retro and Rare made good with existing Nintendo IPs so maybe Nintendo just knows how to do it.  I think I would feel safer though if a Japanese dev was working on it.  Hell anytime an IP is handed off to another developer there's risk of disaster.

Wait and see I guess.

Well Ian, to be fair Kid Icarus really has no real design template. Whatever they do will be completely different from the two old platformers they did. It is one of those games that will basically be a new IP because there isn't much established.

Wow I had no idea about the concept art and supposed plot.  I heard the rumors that Factor5 might have been involved but I had no clue it was confirmed.  All I knew were the early rumors IGN was spreading.  While I am slightly biased to liking the SSB Pit...I wouldn't mind an adult Pit...just as long as he doesn't look like the "I AM PIT!!! HEAR ME ROARZ!!!!" concept art.

I guess we'll see what happens in time.

Icarus comes from Greek Mythology, right? Well, you just don't get any more Western than that... so I have to disagree with Ian about it being a more Japanese game. As for the Eggplant Wizards, its true Eggplants do come from the orient, so maybe they represent the Persians... and the wizards would be the Magi or something.

Maybe Nintendo needs to get the people who made the 300 movie involved in this. :P

Mario is Italian which is also Western but isn't Mario a very Japanese style series?

Well, obviously Yoshi is Japanese (or at least has a Japanese name) but what else besides that is Japanese about the franchise? Smashing blocks and going through pipes isn't a Japanese thing, but it isn't really a western thing either. The Mushroom kingdom is neither east nor west, but its own unique parallel world type thing.

As for Mario, it was explained in (I think it was the cartoon or something) that he was an Italian from Brooklyn, so he is a Westerner that just happened to get sucked into this parallel universe one day.

Plus, I think the words "Goomba" and "Koopa" are Italian-sounding words, but I could be wrong. The mushroom stuff could be any nationality really, but Mushrooms are used frequently in Italian cuisine so who can say?

It just has that look, you know?  Usually you can spot a Japanese designed game and a Western designed game from a screenshot.  It's like how Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell have similar subject matter but both have subtle differences in the graphics design that makes it very obvious that MGS is Japanese and Splinter Cell is Western.  That's what I mean.  I think Kid Icarus looks Japanese despite it's Greek mythology subject matter.

Japanese games usually have a slight anime look to them.  Even in games with realistic visuals there's just this subtle anime influence to it.

(colorful) Mushrooms have a place in Japanese culture as well, but you ignore this possiblity.

And colorful mushrooms aren't a prevalent theme I see in Italian cooking, probably because they're BAD FOR YOU.
