In what I think many will see as a despicable move to make money, Sony patents the war phrase "Shock and Awe."
Unless you have been living under a rock lately, you have heard the term "Shock and Awe". The phrase was coined by US naval pilot Harlan Ullman, and had been adopted by Washington and the news media to describe the second night of bombings in Baghdad in the ongoing war to liberate Iraq.
It was learned today that Sony had trademarked the phrase on March 21st, literally one day after the bombing in Baghdad. It was also learned that Sony plans on releasing a game called "Shock and Awe" for the PS2 on the heels of the war that has killed over 5,000 people thus far. The game, which must have been in development and will now get the "Shock and Awe" name, is said to be playable online globally via a broadband connection.
A spokesman for Sony PlayStation in the UK admitted the company might not stock the game in Britain and Europe owing to political sensitivities.
"Sometimes registering trademarks does not necessarily mean the product will be launched. But if it was deemed unsuitable then we might not ship it here," he said.
"If indeed it is related to the Iraqi war rather than just using that phrase then, yes, it might well be something we would be very sensitive to," the spokesman added
Sony is now one of many companies trying to make a buck off the current war in Iraq. The rush to make a quick buck off something that causes death, grief, and destruction, is and should be criticized and looked down upon.
