Metroid Played in Chronological Order
« on: December 19, 2008, 12:06:00 AM »
I've recently been reviewing Metroid in my head and I want to play the series in the order of the story line. I've always been a fan of Metroid, but never until now have I ever been to owning the whole series!
I own the NES Metroid andSuper Metroid on VC and I'm playing through Prime 3. The other day I got Fusion and Zero Mission from a friend so all that leaves is Metroid II which I have an ok chance of finding around town and Prime Hunters is every. All I would really have to do is wait for the first two Prime games to be released for the Wii or just play the Gamecube versions if they don't come any time this year.

So I have some questions about this whole thing:

Are all the Metroid games interconnected by a story line?
Since Zero Mission is a remake of the NES game is it alright to skip the original and play ZM and move onto the next game?
I didn't like Prime Hunters would I really have to play it?
Should I stop playing Prime 3 now and pick it up when I reach its point in the story?
Has any one done this before?

Yes, they are.  The Metroid Prime 2 Demo Disc even features a time line (obviously omitting  games released after Metroid Prime 2).

No.  You have to play the original NES version, the Game Boy re-make (Zero Mission), the GBA Download version (Via Fusion/Prime link), the GBA NES Classics version and the Virtual Console download.  Same goes for other games re-released (Super Metroid on SNES/Virtual Console, Prime 1/2 on 'Cube/Wii).
Yes.  Metroid Prime: Hunters and Metroid Prime: Pinball must be played.  Also, you have to track down a Virtual Boy and a copy of Galactic Pinball.
Probably - it might take you a long time as it is.
Perhaps, if they half-assed it and only played one version of the main games.  But you're going to do it right, right?

Well, I don't have a NES anymore and since it's on the the Virtual Console I would rather just do that- I just don't see the point in replaying the same game so many times- or are they all drastically different somehow?? I also don't own a GameCube so I was going to play them on the Wii. Does the Fusion hook up added anything extra to the plot? I played a Virtual Boy once- though I can find one in New York  I don't see myself owning one.
I want to play the Metroid games in the order to follow the plot as it happens, not how they were released. I found a chronological run down on Wikipedia so I'll follow that. I'll start with the NES Metroid on Virtual Console and move on to Zero Mission. I'll have to get a copy of Prime, but I'm not sure how long the first two games will take me. I realize this could take me most of next year, but I think it'll be fun!

I was just teasing about having to play each version... ;)

I think you'd be fine just playing Zero Mission, though if you want to see how the gameplay differs (and not just how the story progresses), the original Metroid is quite a bit different and might be worth a run through.  Don't worry about the Prime/Fusion hook up.  Nothing major there (I believe it unlocks the downloadable original Metroid and let's you use the Fusion suit in Prime).  I honestly don't think you need to play either of the Pinball games.  As for Hunters, it's up to you (of course!)

I will definitely will play through the NES version mostly because I have a soft spot for it and it's forever burned into the psyche of my past. Zero Mission, from what I have played so far is so nice that replaying the original will be a bigger challenge. Hunters was a big let down for me, but I could see myself trying it again because I bought it twice- but I am actually good at pinball so a Metroid Pinball would be fun if I'm not sick of the whole environment soon. I hope I'm snowed in so I can start in the morning!

Did Nintendo ever say if both Prime rereleases would in 09? If possible I can play the NES then Zero Mission and hopefully by then some word will come about it. It would suck to buy the GameCube version to find out the Wii ports are a month away.
Yeah, Nickmitch the story order is Metroid,  Zero Mission, Prime, Prime:Hunters, Prime 2: Echoes, Prime 3: Corruption, Metroid II: The Return of Samus, Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion.
Is there a particular reason the games were released telling this story out of order?

Technically, only the Prime series were released out of order.  Zero Mission was a remake, so you can't fault it for that.  So, until the Prime series came along, the story was in perfect order.  The Prime series is just a side story showing what goes on with Samus in between I and II.

Dont forget about Samus' cameo in F1 Race on Gameboy. It's highly insightful piece that reveals a lot about Samus as a warrior and also as a woman. I don't want to spoil it.

I believe this to be true- it's so blatantly apparent with Mario games, but Metroid, it's more contained so I'm hoping the story won't fall apart too fast.

I just beat Zero Mission and since I don't have a copy of Metroid Prime I'm going to replay it and try to get everything I missed.
