Can't think of games to get for christmas...
« on: December 16, 2008, 12:15:37 PM »
I don't know if I'm lapsing as a gamer or if the current releases are to blame but I just can't think of anything I'd want for Christmas... That's not limited to the Wii, I can't find anything on any system I own. Not because I have everything already (I'm mostly buying bargain bin games nowadays so I don't have many recent high profile games) but just because it doesn't look interesting to me. I've become too disinterested to bother with acts like changing the disc in a console to start a game other than the one that's in already. Obviously not finishing most games (DS games get finished the most because I play them on the daily commute) simply by losing interest too quickly and later forgetting the game even exists. It's not that I don't like playing, it's that I don't want to start because the act of starting somehow seems not worth it. There's also sometimes the nagging feeling that while I'm playing I'm wasting my time that I should have used more productively but when I don't I'm just wasting the time with sitting idly and hating every possible action (especially the productive ones) anyway.

Er, drifted off topic there...

Oog. I know that malaise. It's annoying enough when it happens to your gaming habits, but when it starts trickling out to other things, I think it's a sign that you either need a mental vacation, or that you need to find an angle on something that interests and excites you so that you can do something and actually enjoy yourself. I don't know, that's the best I can come up with, I've wrestled with this myself and still don't have a set answer.

I've had this happen with other interest as well, the most devestating being playing music. I may not play my guitar much anymore but i find other ways to get it outta my system, even if its walking by a keyboard at a best buy and playing randomly for a few mins, or even just banging on things at work with a pen to create a beat. It sucks but it happens, and like Kai said sometimes you just need a mental break.

I've had my lapse in gaming habits, as well as friends, but just find something else to do for some time 'til you reset your batterys and before you know it youl'l have that itchy gaming finger back.

My advice is to go for some fun pick-up-and-play games like Jungle Beat. I've never been one for tedious, "epic" games (outside of Zelda and Metroid) and I didn't like that the industry was headed in that direction. I find I have to invest more time than I can spare, and what I get in return isn't usually worth it. I guess that's where I differ from most "hardcore" gamers, and why I have so little interest in non-Nintendo consoles. Give me F-Zero GX and I'm in bliss. Give me a Final Fantasy game and I'd puke.

But anyway, maybe that will help. Unfortunately I'm not aware of many good current games that fit the bill. Anyone?

Well, beating a couple levels of MegaMan 2 helped me out two nights ago.

Great Kairon!
KDR I think you should go with some games that are fun to get into the groove again. You mentioned you didn't want to change disks. So just DL some VC/WW games.

And the great thing about most VC games especially is that they save your place when you return to the Wii Menu. So not only do you have to change discs, but there really is NO commitment whatsoever to many of the games. Why, I had actually beatean two levels of MM2 before I picked it up again a couple days ago, and it seriously threw me right back into the action, and since it saves, I had no qualms about jumping out when I changed my mind.

I recommend getting a Wii Points card or an XBOX Live points card. Both systems have a lot of great downloadable game, the XBOX having some of them at 4 bucks (400 points). That way you'll have something to play.

400 Microsoft Points is $5 dude. A dollar in MS' system is 80 points.

I'm the same way, though I find that the PS1 Final Fantasy games are very digestable when done in short spurts; with Zelda, I don't mind putting in more time.

Personally, even when I'm in a malaise I always enjoy the old fighting games (Street Fighter, etc.), and I'll give props to Wii Sports as well (especially with its adjustable difficulty AI). As for what to buy...yeah, I'd go the Wii Points/Live route, too.

Toki Tori, I say. It's great pick-up and play and then drop gameplay, and it's refreshing to tackle even just one level in that game.

That's what I was doing these past few months. I don't see much of interest on XBLA, usually when a game looks interesting playing the demo will cure that (even worse if it's like A Kingdom For Keflings that keeps nagging you to buy the full version every two actions and then ends half way into the tutorial, who the hell thought that's a good way to demo a game?). I guess there's a reason a study found that indie games sell better when there's no demo available. The only XBLA games I have are Braid (beaten) and SotN (in the second castle, too boring to finish, every platform is JUST out of reach of a normal jump, requiring frequent use of the high jump and bat), haven't seen anything else of interest. People keep saying Castle Crashers is worth it but I was never very interested in beat 'em ups. Most games on the service seem to be Geometry Wars derivatives which I'm not very interested in either.

World of Goo still hasn't gotten its WiiWare release here and I was one of the first people on this board to play Toki Tori.

Maybe Wario Land would be worth it...

Wasn't World of Goo a retail release in europe?

It was going to be but 2dboy decided to make it a Wiiware release instead. The major reason was because people complained about the price of the retail game.So they scrapped the retail release.
