The quintessential RPG for the Japanese market is coming to the Wii.

If there was any lingering doubt that the Wii would be the home console of choice in Japan, this pretty much ends it. It's just been broken through Famitsu and other Japanese language outlets covering Square Enix's Dragon Quest press event that Dragon Quest X is in development and will land on the Nintendo Wii (Reuters confirms the news in English).

Dragon Quest IX already caused a splash when it became the first mainline Dragon Quest game to come to a handheld system (the Nintendo DS) instead of a home console. However, this move made sense given the extent of the Nintendo DS userbase in Japan. Regardless, Dragon Quest X will return to home consoles with the Nintendo Wii, which is outselling its console competitors in the Japanese market but has a long way to go before it can match the DS install base. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata himself was at the Square Enix press conference, and thanked Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii for announcing what amounts to a coup for Nintendo.

Square Enix did not mention a release window for Dragon Quest X, nor did they provide any details beyond the game's existence.

Square Enix did set a release date for Dragon Quest IX in the country: March 28, 2009 at a price of 5980 yen.

The thing is, I can easily see this game intended for a 2010 release. This is way off in the distance ain't it?

Wow great news!I haven't played any DQ games. I know that DQIV,DQIX are on the DS. Is V and VI also on the DS? What about I,II,III?

I strongly dislike the Dragon Quest franchise (I recently played DQ VIII, and it played exactly like an NES game with no evolution whatsoever), but this is huge for the console. Even an RPG from a franchise I don't like is a strong movement towards more RPGs I DO like I the Wii.

Man, I'd kill for DQ I, II, and III. Those were the classic NES RPGs of my childhood.

Kairon I seem to recall DQ 1&2 and DQ3 on the GBC. Other than that I don't think there was anything more recent.I don't know they may be saving those for VC.Just a thought.

Man, I never got a GBC, and I highly suspect that Square is not liable to put their living franchise games (RIP Mana series) on the VC. I'm hoping for DS remakes, since that seems to be Square's modus operandi.

Yep that will work. The GBA and SP plays all GB,GBC,GBA games in existance.

On that note you might want to check ebay for those games.I just checked a minute ago and there is a bid for all three. and it has a low bid currently.Act fast!

Highly doubt it. This is supposed to be a game in the main line of the series, not a spinoff.

Also, despite the promise I see in DQ:S and the fun I had with it... I hope this is vastly different. &P

A much-needed announcement. Aside from the decent Tales of Symphonia 2, Wii is sorely lacking in RPGs. The Paper Mario series is no longer in the RPG genre, really, and Fire Emblem is heavily slanted on the strategy side of RPG. Seriously, I expected some sort Mario & Luigi, Golden Sun, or Baten Kaitos-type game announcement from Nintendo by now.

Wow this is absolutely earth shattering. It's been a while since I went to bed and woke up to such crazy news. I can only imagine that this truly cements the Wii in Japan (not that it wasn't already).

Will this announcement result in a Wii development boom for Japanese companies? It seems to me that with Monster Hunter Tri and this destined for Wii, ignoring the console at this point would only be pure stupidity.

See THIS is significant third party support. Hell, it is probably the most significant third party support we could ever get. This could set off a trend of third parties flocking to the Wii. This is the biggest game series in Japan and when it comes to third party support Japanese devs are where it's at anyway. Are Konami and Capcom going to continue giving us their b-material when Square Enix is giving us their TOP franchise? And this ain't Dragon Quest Swords or any bullsh!t like that. This is the REAL Dragon Quest.

Well the Wii has now become the home console RPG system for Japan. With just the announcement of Dragon Quest X, I can imagine every single Japanese company moving any RPG that's in development or in the planning stages to the Wii.

Plus with Dragon Quest X on the Wii, now none of the Japanese companies can even try and agrue that their games aren't right for the Wii, when the most popular traditional core gaming series in Japan is now hitting the system.
