5th Cell unveils Scribblenauts
« on: December 05, 2008, 08:47:33 PM »
Scribblenauts goes by the concept, "Anything you write, you can use." The hero Maxwell has the power to utilize items in levels called Starites which allow him to later spawn material in the real world for his needs. Ladders, tools, weapons ... goldfish, even. If you can dream it, Maxwell can conjure it, and hopefully both of you can use it to solve your puzzles.

I am very intrigued, if not a little skeptical just based on the ridiculously awesome scope of the game...Definitely going to keep an eye on this one...

Thay say you can feed an elephant to a shark in this game. And give the shark lasers. If so I'm buying, like, ten.

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;

That trailer really sells the game.  Each solution is wackier than the last.  This game needs competitions to come up with the most bizarre solutions possible.

Well the trailer shows multiple angles to the puzzles, so I doubt it'll be a "only one word will progress the game" sorta deal...

And if I remember correctly in the interview it said if you revisit a specific puzzle and if you try to solve it the same way it won't let you which is neat since it makes you think creatively.

I said this in the Talback thread. The games looks incredible and I'm very excited, but I wonder if the scope is too ambitious to fully realise it. Mostly I'm concerned that with the sheer amount of ways to solve puzzles, they'd have to be pretty generic. And easy.

EDIT: Jeremiah Slaczka is an awesome name.

EDIT 2: What will they do for nouns with multiple meanings?

I am most excited about seeing how many times I can complete each puzzle.  Since you can't use the same item twice the difficulty will go up every time and you will have to be more creative and think of new objects with the right applications.

This game is so rad its a definite buy for me. It'll be nice to put that touch screen to good use since I haven't been playing any games with the stylus lately.

At this point, I'm fairly convinced that the core mechanic of Scribblenauts works as advertised, and that's an amazing accomplishment.  What remains to be seen is whether the developer can design interesting puzzles and levels that will actually give me a reason to think of clever words.  A level editor with online sharing would also be an excellent addition to this kind of game.

I guess you could see that as your score for the level, how many times you've beaten it being forced to use a different method each time. Pretty neat.

I'm wondering if methods mean item interactions or items themselves, the latter could lead you to end up blocking yourself. E.g. if you used a bomb (not armed) to hold up a piece of wood and form a slope you wouldn't be able to use the bomb in a later attempt to explode something even though the used solution differs.

How has this game not been talked about?  I know people tend to ignore handhelds compared to consoles but this game looks amazing.

The ways to solve puzzles, the number of them, and the sheer creativity.  The stories alone about the amount of interaction possible should put the hype for this game off the charts!

I'm curious about this game, but a bit worried.  Isn't it the same team that created "Drawn to Life?"  That game, at it's core, was unique, but a dull trek.  While the concept of it creating anything you name is fun, how's the actual substance of the game?  Anyone know?

They say there are over 200 levels so there seems to be plenty to do.  There is some kind of achievement system and a way that lets you play the same level again but without being able to use any previously used words.
All the levels can be edited and shared with other people.

The e3 videos showed mostly basic puzzles.  He has to get something in a tree, get a whale into the ocean, give a chef and fireman what they like, and one where he had to find a way down a hole and around a shark only to climb again to get to the goal.  I liked the last one because he glued boxes to make some stands, dug through the ground and used a toaster to electricute the shark.

None of that includes the videos of everyone goofing around where they summon a werewolf, go back in time to the medieval period to drop tnt on the king, turn invisible, go back to the present and then summon Cthluthu and make him fight God who is riding a skateboard and using a shotgun they gave him.

So I got my NP the other day and there was an article and interview within its pages.

Here is the gist of the interview.

The idea came about with the creative director thinking about Mad Libs style game. The second part was when he had a dream that he was trapped in a room and had to figure a way out. These two ideas was the basis for the game.

There is 2 modes.Puzzle and Action. There are 10 different main worlds. Those range from metro, wilderness,Ancient history to future worlds, underwater and outerspace worlds. There is 280 levels.

Some restrictions are nothing vulgar, copyrighted, suggestive,or overtly religious. No proper Nouns and adjectives.
The currency system is called Ollars. You get them by completing levels, writing new objects, solving puzzles in unique, unconventional ways. You can use them to buy additional level packs, avatars, and music.

The Wi-Fi functionality is used for creating and storing levels. You can share your levels locally and online.

Yes well there is that. As far as I've seen that is the only religious thing.

Anyway this is the type of game I thought of when the DS was unveiled. I like the idea.
