Xbox fan buys Gamecube....story at 11.
« on: April 09, 2003, 04:53:54 AM »
Let me just start by stating that I'm a new member here, but have been reviewing posts for a while...so I'll introduce myself...

I have been a gamer since the old Atari 2600 days.  Owned a Genesis, PS1, Dreamcast (great console), PS2 (sold it), and an Xbox.  I bought an Xbox at midnight on release day 11/15/01, and have been very happy with it.  I have about 60 titles for it, and it has been probably my favorite console to date.

However, I longed for another console, and really didn't give the Cube a chance.  I picked up a PS2, and was rather disappointed in it.  I sold it a few months later, and lost no sleep over it.

About 3 weeks ago, a friend of mine owed me some cash, so since he's a distributor of electronics, asked me if there was anything that I wanted that he might carry.  Well, I have a great 55" HDTV, Surround, DVD, so I said, "You got a Gamecube?"  I figured, what the heck, I'll give it a shot.

I would like to state that I'm very happy with the Cube.  My wife isn't crazy about it (she loves Halo and Ghost Recon for the Xbox). I picked up the following titles to start my Gamecube collection:

Zelda: Wind Waker
Amazing game.  It's like animated artwork in motion.  The story, facial expressions, controls, etc.  are flawless, IMO.

Metroid Prime
At first, I really didn't care for it, but about an hour into the game, I was hooked!  This game is soooo addictive.  The more I play, the more it "grows" on me.  However, I'm presently stuck on a level....maybe I'll post a "help me please" post to get me past it...hehe.

Eternal Darkness
I haven't played much of this title, but it seems to be a pretty decent game.  I picked it up on recommendation from a friend.

Star Wars : Rogue Leader
Great shooter that satisfies the "X-Wing" pilot that is in me.  I love Star Wars, so this game is naturally going to get some "props".

Pikmin
Surprisingly, this game is very addictive... I bought this game used, and didn't have the instruction manual until yesterday, so I've only muddled through the first 3 "days" of finding parts.

Super Monkey Ball
Addictive and fun, but man, this game will test your patience!

Zelda : Ocarina of Time/Master Quest
There's an "other console" forum at the Xbox site I frequent, and this title seems to be the "benchmark" that Zelda:WW was measured on.  I always hear how great this title is, so I picked it up used for $17 at Gamestop.  Not bad, eh?

Resident Evil
I like the Resident Evil series (fave being RE: CV for the Dreamcast).  I have only looked at the first 15 minutes or so of this game.  I'm afraid to go any further for fear of having Metroid, Zelda, and Resident Evil all "games in progress".  I have to pace myself...

Is this a decent starting collection?  There are a few other games that I've heard about (mainly Skies of Arcadia) that I'm semi-interested in.  Keep in mind that this is the first Nintendo product I have EVER owned, so I know pretty much nothing of what the Cube has to offer. The only Nintendo games I have EVER played up until 3 days ago was Starfox and some Mario game for the NES.  The Gamecube will probably not be my primary console, but it definitely is becoming an enjoyable experience.

I'm looking forward to posting here, and entertain any comments!!!

You're missing Smash Bros Melee. Every 'Cuber has that game, and for a very good reason. BTW, don't waste your hard-earned money with the horrible dissapointment that was Starfox Adventures. Yes, us 'Cubers get crappy 2-nd party games too

your story sounds exactly like mine.  bought a ps2 a long time ago.  bought 3 games for it and then sold it on ebay almost at cost a couple of months later.  no looking back.  bought an xbox on launch day and pretty much been a fanboy of it ever since.  i don't get into owning tons of titles ($$$) but i currently have about 8.  i've owned a bunch and then sold them on ebay once completed.  i was a beta tester for xbox live since the 1st round.  was always interested in the cube since it got rogue leader at launch and no other console got it.  then prime came out and i wanted it even more.  well, circuit city has gamecubes for $130 with a free game so i picked that and prime up for $130.  got prime, rogue leader, and super mario sunshine.  all games in progress now, but i gotta say, i'm having more genuine FUN on this console than i think i've had on the box in a while.  can't really think of any new titles i want right now - waiting on halo2.  but enjoy the cube - it's a great console.  oh, and do yourself a favor and pick up a wavebird wireless controller.  you won't regret it.

Can I ask you the same question back for an Xbox???
SO what games are worth buying  for Xbox.
I had these games on my list:Halo, Splinter cell, Mechassault, Live box, Ninja Gaiden.
What else??

El Pollo Diablos.

p.S Opposite of your wife I don't like Ghostrecon
Nintendo is going to treat us good:F-Zero and Star Fox Armada, new Pikmin, 1080, Kirby, Mario Golf, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis and 2 or 3 new franchises ( maybe mature).
Planning on buying an Xbox! Now all I nead is a good gamertag for Live!

My god man you never owned a nintendo console before? Gamecube is great but not there best. You need to get an old nes and especially super nintendo. Super Nintendo was the greatest console ever in my opinion.

I have had probably 80% of all games released for the Xbox.  What would help would be to know what genre games are your favorites.

Ok...here's the definitive list of "must have" games (that are currently out).

Halo (no explanation needed.  Best...FPS...Ever.)

Xbox Live kit (comes with MotoGP demo/Whacked! demo)

Apex (fabulous racing game.  Grapics/story mode are wonderful as well)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ($29 new.  One of the best "Hack & Slash" game I've ever played)

Dead or Alive 3/Tao Feng (DOA3 is just a great fighter, but can be beaten by a 'button masher'.  Tao Feng takes real skill/learning combos.  Button mashers will get obliterated in this game by an experienced player.  Can be frustrating at first. )

Deathrow (sort of extreme sports meets Lacrosse, except your using a disc, shooting toward a ringed goal.  Shoot goals, beat the crap out of the other team, or a combination of both.  Sleeper hit.  Discontinued, so finding a copy might be difficult. )

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (GREAT RPG.  Huge environments.  Play as several different character classes/races.  Over 200 different weapons.  Over 200 different interchangeable armor pieces.  Tons of spells.  Custom spells.  Good graphics.  Gets semi-repetitive and is very time consuming.  I'm still not done, and have over 80 hours into the game.  One primary quest, but TONS of side quests.  Has been claimed to have "bugs", but have never encountered a problem.)

Enclave (3rd person RPG/Action...$19 new, great graphics and gameplay.  Can be frustrating due to the lack of "save points".)

Mechassault (decent single-player campaign.  Buy it for Xbox live capability.  Lots of online fun)

MotoGP (great motorcycle racing...but sequel gets released within 60 days.  Tons of Xbox live fun).

Phantom Crash (great mech game...lots of mech customization...leans toward the Japanese Anime fan.  Best....intro...ever.  Think of it like Mechwarrior meets Unreal Championship.  In cockpit and 3rd person views.  Very underrated game.  Cult following.)

Shenmue II (Awesome action/RPG.  $19.99 new. Comes with a DVD movie of events from the first Shenmue series, to kind of "catch you up" for episode II)

Splinter Cell (apparently you know about this game...no explanation needed.)

Steel Battalion (if you can afford it/find one, get it.  $199.99 new.  Huge 40 button dual-stick controller.  Fully illuminated.  Pedals included.  Control a huge mech, and fight tons of battles with allies.  Several different customizable mechs to choose from.  Awesome replays which are savable to the Xbox hard drive.  Takes 2-3 hours just to get used to the controls.  Control everything from manevering, to chaffs, communication with supply convoys for refueling/ammo, even wash your windows.  )

Anyway, that's the definitive list.  If I had to choose my top 5:

Halo
Elder Scrolls III:Morrowind
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Phantom Crash
Deathrow

It's a hard choice.  Lots of good games for the Xbox.  Unfortunately, there's some definitive "bombs" as well.  Feel free to ask me about specific titles, and I'll be happy to give you a mini-review....

Well, I played some SNES....my grandfather had one so when the grandkids came over, they had some games to play.

I played Starfox and some Mario game on that console, and I forgot about this one.  It was a baseball game, but it had different named kids playing like in a park or something.  That's all the experience I have with that console....that was in my Sega Genesis days, and I was very happy with it.

"I have about 60 titles for it"

60 games for one console?  That's nuts.  I probably would have difficulty thinking of 60 games for all three consoles that I would like, let alone for one.  Hell I don't think I even have 60 games total for all of my consoles.

Anyway your Cube collection so far is pretty good.  Skies of Arcadia Legends is an amazing RPG and I normally don't like RPGs so that's saying something.  You should probably get it though I might wait a bit so you can finish some of your current Gamecube titles.  Super Mario Sunshine is another must-have game unless you hate 3D platformers.  I suggest you get a Gameboy Player when it comes out to so you can play ports of some of the SNES classics you missed.  You cannot pass up Yoshi's Island and The Legned of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Here's an interesting question: if/when you buy Soul Calibur II which version will you buy?  Xbox or Gamecube?

Your collection is pretty excellent. Smash brothers is pretty darn fun, oh, and later you might be best of picking up the GCN version of Soul Calibur 2 because of adult Link.

BTW I assume you have most musthaves that go multisystems so were just talking exclusives here right?
BTW, how much do you play if you have over 60 Xbox games?

Not sure.  Haven't really researched this game too much.  I have SC1 for the Dreamcast, and it's probably my favorite fighter of all time.  I'm not sure if you've played SC or not, but it is great.  Very fluid movements, unlockables, etc.  Great game.

BTW...do you know of the differences between the Xbox and GC versions?

Think of it as more of a "collection".  I'm at a point in my life where I have a decent amount of disposable income.  As a younger kid/teen, I had NO FUNDS to buy games, etc.  So, since I love games so much, I guess I'm sort of living out my childhood.  Plus, I'd rather play a great RPG/sports game than watch TV for entertainment.

Well , SC2, the GCN advantage is pretty much that Link is a playable character, but hes supposebly awesome, and hell its Link.
The Xbox advantage is that its supports D4 Progressive Scan (1280x720 Resolution I think).

Both versions of SCII are virtually identical except that the Cube version has Link from Zelda in it and the Xbox version has Spawn.  Graphically the Xbox version is a little better, so I hear.  Unless you really care about the exclusive characters I would base the decision on which controller you would feel more comfortable using.

well i would recomend he get the Xbawx version of SC, given hes not had much exposure to Link so i guess wouldn't be that impressed by his addition, but that being said he does have MQ/WW, so i guess link could be quite the favorite charactor.

also given his rather large budget *hateing glares* he could get both if he wanted hehe

Yeah, exclusives.  I am planning to probably buy multiplatform titles based on if the Xbox/GC version offers something the other doesn't.  A lot of Xbox titles support custom soundtracks where you can play ripped songs off your hard drive instead of the standard fare of game music.  Listening to Disturbed, System of a Down, Godsmack, 50 Cent, etc. while playing a driving game is much better than the standard "techno" fare.  That is a bonus that I really like.  If they're in essence the same, I'd probably buy the Xbox version.  Also, Xbox can support up to 1080i resolution.  Of course, the game has to as well.  I am presently running gold component cables to a 55" Phillips HDTV, and it also supports Dolby Digital DTS and 5.1.  I have a killer surround sound system, so the Xbox version will probably win out.

By the way, the answer to your 2nd question is this:  I play games practically every day.  It's not the only thing I do, but I get quite a bit of time to get some gametime in, especially after the kids go to bed.  Also, my wife is turning into quite the gamer.  We play alot of co-op games together, and have beaten Halo on Legendary, Conflict Desert Storm, Baulders Gate: Dark Alliance, Gauntlet, Ghost Recon, and several other co-op games together.  She is also quite good at FPS's when she's playing solo.  Also, she likes to race MotoGP on Xbox Live.  Therefore, I do not get too much flak for gaming.

She was not real "hip" on getting a 3rd console (my kids have their own Xbox upstairs), but now that I'm in the middle of Zelda, she doesn't mind it too much.  She actually seems to like to watch me play Zelda:WW, and is starting her own Eternal Darkness game.
