In the original if you fell down 3 times you didn't lose automatically, but it would take the will of God to let you get back up before Mario counted to 10.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Interesting. I always thought it was three knock downs and you're out.

You might as well have lost automatically because no human can press the button fast enough to get back up.

BUMP!

I am loving the hell out of this game. I, however, have one issue with it. In boxing, if in the course of the rounds you knock down your opponent three times then you win. This rule is sometimes ignored in games so the game plays longer. In Punch Out, on the other hand, is messed up.

If you knock down your opponent two times in round one, and then again in round three it doesn't count as a TKO since you have to knock him out three more times in that round. Fair enough, but the issue is that this rule doesn't apply to Little Mac at all! If Little Mac is knocked out two times in round one, he gets knocked out for good in round two.

This is pretty unbalanced since in the original the rule applied to Mac as well.

I've been knocked down three times in multiple rounds and gotten back up a few time.

One time it started the tko animation and I yelled "nooooooo"  only to have little Mac bounce right back up because they put in a fake out tko animation.  I didn't know what do and got beat down for a few seconds until I got back in the game.

I think you need to hit 1 and 2 buttons as fast as possible while that happens.

Also, I noticed an easter egg. In the World Circuit arena you can spot DK out in the audience. Its tricky since you have to pay attention during the cutscenes in which the audience is fully seen, but DK can be clearly seen in the back.

I just read ANOTHER neat secret in Punch-Out Wii. When looking at the character data in the Wii disc Disco Kid is labeled as "Kid Quick". Kid Quick is a character from the old Punch Out arcade games. This indicates that the guys at Next Level Games were thinking of remaking the character and be the sole arcade representative (while some of the characters appeared in the arcade games all of them had console appearances). But turns out that he was so different from the original character they made him a new character, BUT he still retains Kid Quick's stats, right down to the hometown.

Pretty cool, eh?

I just picked the Wii Punch Out today, and given that we just had Christmas and there might be a few more new Punch Out owners out there I might as well *bump* this.

So far, I've made my way up to Soda Popinski, and in general haven't had too much trouble in Career mode (though the battles with Dom Flamengo and Great Tiger gave me some trouble until I did some practice in Exhibition).  From the looks of my practice fight with Soda, though, the game gets a lot harder from here on out.  Still, despite not being terribly fond of the original NES game and boxing in general, I'm finding myself really liking this game.  The presentation is quite nice (though I would have liked subtitles for the non-English dialogue.  Still, at least I could understand Don Flamengo), and the Challenge mode in Exhibition is more fun than I thought it would be (I've cleared all the Challenges up to Bear Hugger, who I only have the Challenge to clear him in Round 1 left).  The game just has a sheer energy and sense of fun to it.  Pity the unlockables are rather...blah.

Bah...I tried playing that game with the Wiimote + Nunchuck motion control combo way back when on a Gamestop demo kiosk, and I was struggling to beat Glass frickin' Joe.  No one in their right mind should use anything other than the Wiimote on its side NES-style for that game.

wrong. only those not looking for a physical challenge on top of the regular challenge of the game should do that.

In a game that relies on split-second timing like this one does, it's not worth the hassle of trying to use unresponsive Wii motion control IMO.

Unresponsive Wii controls? Explain to me how I beat Story Mode with so called "unresponsive controls".

Punch-Out!! is another game that weeds out weakness.  The gamepad excuse is proof that 'gamers' are UNRESPONSIVE.  Why is it that the usual Wii critics tend to be WEAK PEOPLE?

I am responsive.  I am Wii Fit.  The motion gameplay is exciting.  If you can't hand Glass Joe his own ass with some simple waggle, that's a sign the individual SHOULDN'T be ignoring the physical opportunities this game presents.  Jesus Christmas, my 10 yr-old cousin can waggle his way past King Hippo the first time around.  To be consciously fast enough to move in-sync with Little Mac is a hidden gem of disciplined physical arcade gameplay that shows lazy people are still a complete mess despite the added accuracy of Wii Sports Resort Swordplay.

The gamepad play is such a bland piece of cake.

I like using the B/Z-trigger option for jabs.  I think it's faster than pushing Up on the stick, and it helps balance the responsibilities for the two arms.

BnM, let's spar with Caterkiller.

Sticks & Stones, Pro.  I have no need to prove myself to anyone, especially to you.  If a game expects me to execute commands with speed and accuracy, I think it only suitable that the controls enable me to do so.  I find motion control in general to be too unpredictable for twitch gameplay, because there is a delay in execution from the console having to interpret your movements.  I'll stick to the much more reliable and expedient nature of buttons, thanks.

Whatever our disagreements on the motion control in Punch Out, though, we can all agree on one thing: there's an option for everyone in here, whether you like motion control or not.  So let's get back to appreciating the game itself, shall we, before the moderators have to intervene?

That almost sounds like a slogan.

I got the game for Christmas from my bro.  I'm also stuck at Soda Popinski at the moment.  I've used motion controls exclusively and have had no problems, other than figuring out how to throw high punches at first.  I guess sometimes I get carried away throwing one too many punches at a time, leaving myself vulnerable to attack.

I love the arcade style of the game.

Has anyone played the Club Nintendo Doc Louis fight?

I am still on title defense.  I stopped for a while because it was disheartening to have these lightweights beating me all over the ring.

On a side note I have never had a problem with the motion controls and do no better or worse with the buttons.  It is also a lot more fun to shadow box to bring up my life when I knock somebody down.

Ok, I just picked this game up again a little bit ago for the first time since the week it came out and decided I should atleast finish it one time through. I got inspired after I lent it to a friend about a week or so ago and he was eager to give it back since he had already beat it.

I left off on Super Macho Man who wasn't all that hard since he was pretty easy to read, but now I'm on Mr. Sand Man and I'm not sure I would last 4 seconds in the ring with this guy. He is the spiritual Mike Tyson from the old Punch Outs and he used to kick my ass all the time. I'm really intimidated from even trying the title fight since it's looks pretty pointless. I'm doing exhibition and I sure his 1st few punches would have TKO'd me in an actual fight.

So my question is, what are my cues that I'm looking for because i'm getting pummeled in exhibition mode.

truth is I haven't really tried to fight him, I was just looking to see what his initial pattern is, but I can't tell when to dodge his quick left jab that looks like it will floor you on the first hit.
does this guy blink or something that I'm not noticing?

edit: Nevermind, I think I figured him out.

I was about to respond with something to help you. Been asleep for most of the day.

You might of noticed but every fighter flashes red for when you have to dodge or counterpunch. He doesn't have many "tells" that you can read quickly and react. Sometimes he throws different timed punches such as his "stand still" and "Night Night" His other punches are rather quick. So you need to pay attention.
It takes a while to get his timing down.

Good Luck BlackNMild!!
