PREVIEWS: Korg DS-10
« on: September 07, 2008, 08:23:10 AM »
It's time to upgrade your Electroplankton DJ setup.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=16661

Just to be perfectly clear at the outset: Korg DS-10 is not a music/rhythm game.  It's not a game at all.  And it's not meant to be a light-hearted virtual toy like Wii Music, either.  This software turns your Nintendo DS into a truly legitimate electronic synthesizer with extensive features found on significantly more expensive equipment.  If you've never used a real synthesizer, the Korg DS-10 can be rather intimidating due to its professional capabilities.

Korg has developed this product with the goal that a DJ could take it to any dance club and do just about anything that he could do with a real synthesizer.  On the other hand, there are some tools for the electronic composer, too.  You can save up to eighteen songs, each one containing up to sixteen patterns with very long loops, so that adds up to hours of your own unique creations.  The tools are designed to be easy to use with the DS touch screen but offer essentially the same depth of control as real synthesizer hardware.  There's a sequencer, keyboard, KAOSS pad, and a drum machine with pads you can tap with the stylus.  You can even patch the components into a customized rig by dragging the cables on the touch screen.

We've seen no indication that Korg DS-10 will teach you how to create music or how to get the most out of its impressive feature set.  This is an advanced tool geared towards users who are already familiar with the real hardware.  The combination of portability and drastically lower price will likely make the Korg DS-10 an amazing value and versatile tool for electronic musicians.

This is pretty freakin' awesome! I saw right from the start that I knew it was a sound sampler. I might pick this one up to add to my collection if it is compatible with programs like Cubase or Rose--something in Linux.

It seems like a really amazing program though. The fact that they fit it on the DS w/o the GBA slot really shows how cool it is. I didn't see a price though. Probably gonna be around $100 if not higher. And this speaks about what can become a sound synth now. If a DS can do it, why not a mobile phone or PDA? Seems like Korg is really figuring out where the market could possibly be.

This is one of those things that makes me wonder, will the DS ever go away? Disney and baseball stadiums are using it, does that mean that it'll just always be there in one form or another? "Check it out guys! My PSP2 has a DS chip in it. Now I can go to the ball and start picking out which guys I'm going to dance with by checking up their profile first from their DS chips. WOW!" Oooor something like that.

This brings the DS ever so closer to becoming the best console ever.  In fact, in my opinion its already there.

I don't see why Korg DS-10 would cost any amount more than a regular DS game.  It doesn't come with any special hardware.

Is there any sort of release date set for this?  It would be great if I could put this on my Christmas list.  IGN says September 30 but I can't find it on any sites like Futureshop or EB or anything like that.  Amazon.com says Oct 14 but it's not on Amazon.ca.  I hope this isn't hard to find in Canada.

I hope it has a decent manual.  I know how to write songs but I've never had a keyboard before so I won't know what's what.  I don't need it dumbed down, just tell me what each thing on the screen is and if it's some jargon that I don't know I'll look it up online.

I know of no release date at all, when I asked the guy at my super duper game shop a few months ago he laughed at me and said it would never come to the US, BUT I'm sure it's coming because it's selling like hot cakes in Japan and a release date has been set for the UK. It couldn't come out any sooner in my opinion.

Not at all- Korg makes everything else look like Wii Music.
