MS, Sony & Nintendo switching to cardboard boxes in 2009...
« on: August 28, 2008, 08:04:13 PM »
Well, not really... but if Wal*Mart has their way (and Wal*Mart generally does), we could be looking at something like this fairly soon:

http://checkoutblog.com/entries/2008/8/28/green_gaming__yup.aspx
"Switching to cardboard packaging would be like taking almost 4,000 cars off the road in terms of equivalent green house gas emissions."

I'm all for saving the planet and such, but shipping games in cardboard sleeves where they're too prone to damage isn't something I'm going to jump for joy over.

Wal*Mart has the power to make this happen - if we let them... we must fight to stop them, now!

Leave a comment on the blog and let Joe know what you think about this idea.

I don't know about this. I mean, surely we can all agree that the environment is more important than the packaging our games come in, right? And if game cases are actually proven to cause environmental problems that could be solved by simply changing packaging to cardboard, it doesn't seem like a bad idea at all, right? Just so long as they do it in a way that keeps games safe from harm it doesn't seem like such a bad deal.

But it's not like it's just game packages alone that do this damage, it's the fact that they are plastic...So basically ANYTHING that's plastic is going to be bad for the environment...

Just skip that stage and go straight to digital distribution. I'm sick of baby steps.

If this means anything even remotely like the boxes that the Futurama movie DVDs come in then it's the worst idea in the world.

Well the GBA game cases were all in cardborad and I like them.
In Japan, don't they use cardboard slips or something?

A lot of people weren't fond of the GBA cardboard boxes - that's what started TheCoverProject.net, afterall. ;)

perhaps it'll be like the eco-friendly CD packaging their doing now?  If so, I won't have any problems, that stuff holds up pretty well.

If it helps the environment do it.  As long as the game itself is in a sleeve that doesn't scratch it is ok with me.

Game collectors will whine but still buy the games anyway because they play games or buy the super expensive limited edition hypebox with free book/figure/plushie/chainsaw/stupidity.

No comment ::rolls eyes::

Though I do hope Walmart switches to pop up book versions of games, just think of all the emissions we could avoid there! If it is for the environment DO IT dangit!

Aren't there more pressing environmental issues to be solving than game packaging at the moment?

If you ship games in a case that they can't reliably be stored in then that case will go in the trash and many people will buy replacement cases.

How about we just make the boxes smaller instead of cardboard? DS game cases seem like they could be the perfect size to hold the disc.

Also, if this happens I'll just be buying boxes and frequenting the cover project to print new cover art, so take that environment.
