Vertical Lines in Windwaker
« on: April 05, 2003, 10:18:53 AM »
I've recently bought a gamecube (platinum) and my first game aside from the freebie, was zelda. My question is while riding in the ocean, I see vertical lines in the waves, like graphical errors. Everything else looks perfect, and its only in certain conditions of the game that I see the lines. I have tried on different TV's and still get the same, although its more noticable on my trititron for some reason. Is anyone else having this graphical problem, or is there something wrong with my system/game?

Hmm, I have not encountered this problem.  It's most likely a problem with your game.  If it is a big deal to you then you might want to return that copy for a new one.

You're sure you aren't talking about the treasure chest location indicators, right?

I see these vertical lines too during Wind Waker, usually at dawn or when there is a shift in light.
I doubt it's a disc defect or a system error. I'm guessing its something akin to slowdown. It's not permanent, very minor, and not a big deal.

ok so i'm not alone, its only in certain lighting conditions (usually when the moon is up in game), its nothing earthshattering wrong with the game, just a little graphical glitch that was probably overlooked or something.

I get it too. It only happens during the evening or morning where the transition between night and day occur. I think it's because of the graphical art style. Perhaps it's the blending of colors.

u know what.....i saw this too, but then i realized it was rain....look closesly....at first i thought it was static, but it only happens on the ocean(to me anyways)...i thought it was static, but it was just light rain....its more defined when its heavy rain.

nolimit, these are very distinct lines that form and change as the day changes. It's not any form of rain.

What type of TV do you have?

It seems like someone else posted about these lines on the Zelda board and a PGC staff member replied saying it was dithering. This could be a different situation, but I've always thought that this was the thing they were referring to.

It's possible these lines are only forming for certain people. I'd hate to think my Gamecube is is malfunctioning or something.

I've tried on two different tv's.  a 27" Sony Trinitron, and a 27" RCA (some new one thats made for xbox's, has some port for them, since i have an xbox also) Both TV's have the vertical lines, but the Trinitron shows them alot more than the other tv. As someone mentioned, its not rain, although I do know what your talking about with that, its generally only seen during light changes like others have said.

I have yet to notice them and I play on a 61 " tv so they would be pretty big if it was happening.
I'll be playing again tonight so if I do notice I'll come back and  mention it.

It's a dithering artifact that's visible during water transitions and sometimes in shadows or other lighting effects. There's nothing wrong with your game or your tv or your Gamecube. In fact, if you can see it noticably, your tv is pretty good.

yeah its definitely not rain...rain is obviously rain...this sticks on the screen like a status sprite about 8 vertical lines that appear towards the middle of the screen going from left to right...they dont take up the whole screen just a small section in the middle. I have a tv about 10 years old...goldstar...i also use a pelican multiconsole rca switcher.

I see this too, unfortunately.
It looks like interference of some sort (it has a "ghost"-like quality to it). I'm using a 27" t.v. w/an aftermarket s-video cable. I've only had my GC (Platinum) for a few weeks, but I've not seen these lines in any of my other games (MP, RE, RE0 & ED). I mostly notice it when the screen contains a lot of medium (blue) or light colours. I noticed it today when I was sparring with Orca (in the light brown colours). It's not a constant thing & the pattern can shift from thick to thin lines.
I'd like to know if this is a problem exclusive to all WW copies, both NTSC & PAL. If not I might try to exchange my copy for another.

It's in every version of the game (US at least) and happens on every Gamecube. You won't notice on a smaller/older TV, but you will if you have something like 25" and up I'd say, especially on an HDTV when running the game in progressive scan.

Are you sure you guys aren't just seeing the shadow of the sail?  The shadow is rather thin and pixelated.  I thought it was a bug for a while until I saw that it changed sides with the sail.  I am pretty sure that is what you are describing.

Well if that's true it's disappointing, to say the least. But it won't stop me from playing or enjoying this great game!
I just hope Nintendo keeps it from happening in future releases. I also wonder if it's a coincidence that the only game it happens in uses a cel-shading based graphics engine?

Jollus-- It's not a graphic effect or artifact. It's a very thin ghost-like layering of vertical lines. It looks like interference of some sort.

I noted these lines as well and mentioned it in another thread in the Hyrulian Forum...someone there told me it was due to dithering as was commented on earlier in this thread as well. It's annoying, but nothing I can't live with.

It's not a big deal at all. I'm so used to weird lines, waves, and other weird things from playing the SNES and Genesis. This is only minor. It reminds me of how gaming used to be before it went to all polygons and textures.

I get the same problem (and not just when sailing- sometimes it happens in other dark areas, too). I have a 20" flatscreen Advent TV that I bought just a few weeks ago. My Gamecube I've had since launch. I also move the camera around, but it never erases the lines. The lines didn't bother me, thoguh- just a nuisance on occasion.
