Wii Speak <<<<<<<<<<<<< Promised hardcore games annoucements

Just saying.

I'm not an Animal Crossing fan so I'm not too interested in Wii Speak yet. I think it's a neat concept and probably a better solution than a headset (wired or wireless) for the Wii. Battery life and Motionplus would simply overcomplicate and ruin things. At the same time, the one game I would've wanted it for (Brawl) is not only out already, but has sh*tty online anyway. I can't imagine how much more devastating the lag would be if the game included voice chat too.

I'm still baffled that Nintendo continues to add more and more to the Wii without fixing existing problems like their crappy online structure. Wii Speak is neat-o and all, but it'll still be saddled by Friend Codes. Same goes for MotionPlus. It would've been nice (and make sense) if Nintendo got at least one 3rd party developer to come on stage at E3 with a new game that properly utilizes the peripheral. If it was a so-called hardcore game, they would've killed 3 birds with 1 stone. Maybe nothing is in the works, but isn't that the whole problem?

I don't know what's up with everybody complaining about headsets being uncomfortable. Do you guys have huge heads or something?

As a matter a fact, I do. Don't hate.

A headset would kill the batteries. A wired headset would disrupt the harmony of the Wii remote and nunchuk. I can just imagine some jackass yanking off his headset tethered to the Wii remote.

The 360 wireless headset can be charged through the USB port.

I do, however like the idea of not wearing headsets when there are multiple players. I just hope they handle the muting of both myself and annoying kids in a simple way.

Probably it's going to need to calibrate it before you use it that involve playing different sound samples from the TV and then calculating the sounds and echos it should hear from the tv and then removing them the recording(like sound canceling headphones). Then again, AC isn't known for loud explosion and heavy metal music....

True but AC won't be the only game compatible with Wii Speak.

Well... do we know where wiispeak plugs in at?  If it uses a USB, I wonder if any old USB headset could be used, or the hardware could be reverse engineered by a 3rd party pretty easy.

Taking a different approach to the voice chat solution for the Wii, Nintendo announced the WiiSpeak peripheral that will ship along with the forthcoming Animal Crossing: City Folk this holiday.

The small microphone that sits on top of the Wii sensor bar will pick up anyone's voice in the room, relaying the audio through your television's speakers. This, according to Nintendo, is to encourage a more inclusive experience. Whether or not that will be the case -- or if it'll just be a general annoyance to everyone in your household -- remains to be seen.

I had a chance to test out WiiSpeak with Nintendo's Charles Martinet (acting at Mario). I sat in a small area with a Nintendo rep who played Animal Crossing while I asked Martinet  (or Mario, if you're in to make-believe) questions about various fish he had caught, or if he had gotten rowdy at any industry parties the night before.

Between Mario, the PR rep, and myself, we had a pretty nice three-way conversation going on. I was able to hear Martinet clearly through the television's speakers, and as far as I was able to tell, he was clearly understanding me even though I was a good five or si feet away from the WiiSpeak. While I'm not entirely sold on the method, it's good to know that the hardware seems to work as good (if not better) than you'd expect.

Well for an action game I could see having a button to activate to send voice messages, and when you do, it can change the volume of the game to lower and then pick back up when you finish communicating.  It could be like you are focusing on the conversation instead of the surroundings and could work just fine.

Who here wants to hear my wife yelling at the kids to stop doing what kids do but shouldn't do while I try to sneak in some Animal Crossing time?

Probably wouldn't happen with a headset.

Also, what if I'm playing with some spaz who is cussing up a storm cause someone stole the fish he was going after and my kids are watching the action? They don't hear the kids cussing at me in Halo...

The usb cable on it is pretty long aready so if you don't want it on the TV then you could always set it up in front of the couch or really want a head set you could duck tape it on someones head and everyone else just yell at him the whole time you play :P

I guess theoretically they can work but the game will be hard coded to do the audio through the TV speakers anyways.

No more than it being either directly above or directly below the TV which will most likely be putting out quite a bit of sound, and if that were a problem Nintendo probably would have noticed it by now.

Teleconferencing mics, like the ones used in Polycom conference room phones, have noise cancellation technology which cancels the sound that the device is outputting, preventing it from coming back into the mic.

People underestimate how much noise a fan can generate, especially when it's near a mic which is intended to pick up voices from 10 feet away. In the case of Polycom phones used in office conference rooms, the temperature is often regulated by a central AC unit in a maintenance room somewhere, meaning no fans or AC noise is heard.

In the case of a living room, however, it's not uncommon to have an AC unit in the window in the same room or at the very least a fan running. The WiiSpeak mic will be rendered useless by both of these. Beyond that, there's a whole plethora of background noise that a household of human beings generate which you'd be better off not broadcasting to your AC friends. It'd be confusing at best and embarrassing at worst.

The one hope I see for it is the fact that it looked to have a very long cord, meaning you could sit it next to you and possibly turn down the receive threshold.

Still, this is no substitute for a headset, as not only do you often not want an entire room full of people to be able to hear your conversations, but the closeness of the mic to the player's mouth is what allows for clear speech in an otherwise noisy room.

Unless Nintendo has licensed some new mic technology which somehow discerns unwanted background noise from regular speech, then I suspect this mic isn't the voice chat solution most of us were hoping for.

I'd love to be wrong, but I see this as a limitation of the technology which has yet to be overcome.

Oh, I get it. You're one of those people who turns everything into a bizarre absolute in a desperate attempt to mask the fact that you've no counter to an argument.

WiiSpeak fails logistically, and I say that because it might be a great tool for teleconferencing with two rooms full of people who know each other at great distances (provided there is ZERO BG noise on either end), but it's a terrible tool for 3rd parties who would *GASP* allow us to chat with people without friend codes being involved or for the typical code swapping with complete strangers that happens on nearly every gaming forum.

I don't mind the addition of WiiSpeak, but it'd be great if Nintendo introduced a bluetooth headset which worked with the Wii's protocols.

This is just another roadblock to 3rd party devs being able to give their customers true online voice chat on the Wii without having to consider the ramifications of that audio coming through speakers into a room where who knows who else resides.

I find voice chat invaluable for online games, especially Team Fortress 2 where fast communication can make the difference between losing and winning, but you do get that occasional assclown who loves spouting obscenities, racism and who knows what else. There's a reason we're able to mute these people, but we can only do that as a reaction to something they've already said, hence why voice chat is typically piped into a private channel for the player alone to hear.

Just for kicks, I'm going to go on gamefaqs and swap AC codes with everyone (because people swap codes with strangers all the time, something Nintendo should probably know about), then start voicechatting and when it becomes clear there's family in the room, I'm going to start telling my own special version of "The Aristocrats" joke. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_aristocrats , FYI).

This will quickly and efficiently demonstrate the inherent design flaws of Wii Speak.
