Let's talk about 3D Sonic here
« on: June 21, 2008, 12:05:51 AM »
The Conduit thread is being derailed, so let us criticize and praise the three dimensional Sonic games here.

Sonic Heroes? Hated this game and the punishment it reigned down on me.
Sonic and The Secret Rings? Decent but not my kind of game.

Here is the break down.

While I agree that the 3D Sonic games are not as high of quality as the 2D games and are not as fun, in many respects. I do not think it is because they are "broken" as some would call it or because they do not move "fast enough" as others have said. Sonic, the old Sonic, had just as much exploration and defeating of enemies as the new ones do. As one who has played them all I think I can say that they all feel about right to me.

My personal thoughts.

Sonic 3-D Blast (Saturn NOT the Genesis clone)- Pretty good game. Not as fast paced as I would like but still had a lot of fun playing this game. Graphics needed some work but I think it being a Genesis port was a major problem with it.

Sonic Adventure- Best game in the series, hands down.

Sonic Adventure 2- Improved on the Chao management but was a little disapointing but still not bad.

Sonic Heroes- It was not as good as the first two but still played pretty well and kept the series moving forward.

Shadow- the only game in the series I have yet to play, I treat it the same as Luigi's Mansion which I was not impressed with as much as I wanted to love it.

Sonic Next-Gen- Played on the 360, it was  a hell of a lot of fun, maybe not as good as SA1 but still I don't get what was so bad with it.

The only "main" Sonic game I haven't tried yet is Secret Rings, but I do want it.

I don't necessarily think it has to be that much faster, because the Sonic Rush games on the DS are the fastest and I think they're too fast with not enough platforming. Sonic 2 is my 6th favorite game all time, I want something paced like that, fast, but still a platformer.

I think we're mostly in agreement that Sonic Adventure 1 is the best 3D game in the series, well it was the slowest one, too, at least of the ones I played. It essentially copied the style of Super Mario 64, a hub world off of which you accessed different action stages which each contained multiple challenges. There was some speed, and some exploration. Too much speed gets you Sonic Rush, too much exploration gets you Knuckles and Rouge in Sonic Adventure 2.

It never bothered me that SA1 was the best, what boggles my mind is how much hate the others get. It isn't limited to here, even the die hard Sega Fanboys all find something to bitch about, but it is usually something like they are too short or there isn't enough Shadow or stuff like that.

I am not a Sonic fanboy, not in the least, but I grew up on Sonic and like Mario I usually can't get enough, but unlike Mario, Sonic stayed true enough to it's roots that I can still enjoy pretty much every game he shows up in, Mario just changes to much.

I liked SA2, more than SA1 in fact.  The Sonic/Shadow levels in SA2 were especially good, and I even kind of liked the mech levels.  Only the treasure hunting levels got on my nerves.  Pumpkin Hill, ya'll.

I liked SA1, but there were times when the level goals didn't seem all that clear.  Near the end, beyond even those noxious Big the Cat levels, I got stuck on the airship with Amy Rose and could never figure out what I was supposed to be doing.  Never played Shadow's game, but just thinking about it kind of makes me feel embarrassed.  It's the video game equivalent of Disco Mickey.

The Sonic/Shadow levels were great, the Knuckles/Robotnik levels were decent, the Knuckles/Rouge levels were bad enough to make me forget the other 2 and sell the game.

So as far as I understand the two main complaints are:
1. Camera sucks
2. The extra characters get levels that are just a nightmare to play

It's no wonder a game gets a lot of hate when it forces the player to go through horrible levels. When a game could be imroved a lot by just deleting a bunch of levels that is a big strike against it.

In Sonic Adventure you don't, but you do in Sonic Adventure 2. You pick the hero or villain side and play through the levels in a specific order. I sold the game when I got to the point where I was at a Knuckles level in the hero story and a Rouge level in the villain line and I didn't feel like going through either again.

I never beat that game, I mostly played time trials. Yeah OK so those are valid points I can agree with, I didn't like that either. Rogue wasn't so bad though.

Have any of the more recent Sonic games used the Robotnik theme introduced in SA2?

QFT, I can't stand that. I really wish they would've left that exclusive to the Japanese releases. We get it, he is shaped like an egg, doesn't mean you need to give him the lamest name ever.

I still call him Robotnik, no matter how many times they call him Eggman. I would seriously be more likely to buy a new Sonic game if they called him that again.

It's kinda like I still call him Professional 666 instead of Madona Dynomite.

His Full name is Dr. Eggman Robotnik, right?

Sonic calls him Eggman mockingly, he usually detests it so I assumed it was an insult. If they changed it then yeah that is dumb.

He's Dr. Eggman, end of story. The name Eggman is where his design came from in the first place.  Dr. Eggman was originally designed as a caricature of Theodore Roosevelt, who was nicknamed the Walrus.  Then there's the popular Beatles song called, " I Am the Walrus", and in the song they say, I am the Eggman as well.

That's the whole point, Dr. Eggman is a caricature of Theodore Roosevelt, who was the Walrus, as an Eggman based of the Beatles song.  Hence that's why his very first artwork for the very first Sonic game has him like this.

I don't care what his original design was based off of, his name is Robotnik. If we give in and call him Eggman then the terrorists have won.

3D Sonic games = ****. All of them. In 2D Sonic games basically you just start the game and hold right on the D-PAD until you beat the game. On 3D Sonic, you hold up on the analog stick, or push the Wiimote forward, until you beat the game. THAT'S IT. The only good Sonic games are the DS ones.

I'm 20 times more excited for that than I am for Sonic Unleashed. To be fair, though, I'd be 20 times more excited than I am for Sonic Unleashed about any BioWare RPG on a Nintendo platform.
