So what's up with Capcom?
« on: April 03, 2003, 07:53:24 PM »
I am personally inclined to say this is total BS, but I thought I would run it by here first.

http://gamers.com/news/1347106

Apparently, Capcom is reducing support for GameCube.  Given that this is the only place reporting this, I might disagree, especially since 2 more Capcom games have recently been rumored at IGN.

EDIT:  It's up on IGN now too.  This really sucks, although I think that it should be mentioned that Capcom themselves have not commented on it yet, and it's likely they will change their minds when sales skyrocket with the new Final Fantasy.

I'd hate to see Capcom lower support for the GCN.  I like having Capcom, although once I play all the Capcom 5 games, I'll decide if I care about Capcom support or not.  Don't get me wrong, the REs for GCN were great, but I need something new from Capcom.  P.N. 03 hasn't been getting rave reviews, and if the other Capcom 5 are mediocre games (like P.N. 03 is it seems), I won't really care if Capcom doesn't support the GCN.  I'm pumped about Killer 7 and RE4 though and if those games are as good as I think they will be, then I'll hate to see Capcom support start to fade.

Capcom wants to be multiplatform.  Shinji Mikami wants to be Nintendo-only (or at least vocally anti-Sony).  If Capcom keeps pressing the situation to the point where Mikami doesn't want to put up with it anymore, I wouldn't be surprised if he asks for a position at Nintendo.  Unfortunately the franchises he's known for won't come with him.  But if his name is big enough to headline games (such as often done in the PC realm and with movie directors), he won't have too much of a problem creating new ones anyway.

This wont be that bad, Nintendo isnt stupid, they want to have 3rd party exclusives. Maybe Capcom is trying to entice Nintendo to pay some more cash for exclusivity.

I think like everyone else, Capcom feels that stay afloat you need to be multiplatform, but I can see this conflicting with what the consoles need.

The developers want/need to port what they can; the console developers are fighting tooth and nail to get exclusives of some kind, even if that exclusive title is a timed one. I'm no genie, but I think the next couple of years we'll see more clashes than alliances. Maybe even more buyouts to cut the other consoles off.

Nah, I just think that Capcom want some more money from Nintendo, and they never said that they would be some sort of Nintendo 2nd party anyway. I think some people forget that Capcom still is a very big 3rd party developer.

I think Capcom is having trouble selling its big games on Cube versus the sales it used to have on Playstation...this isn't a huge surprise, since GameCube has a relatively small user base which is not known for buying "adult" games like Resident Evil.  From what I know the sales haven't really been bad, either, I bet RE 0 has sold more than a million units worldwide which isn't bad, but it could probably sell more than three million on the Playstation 2.  As such, Capcom is thinking about going back to Playstation, and I don't blame them (or it...it is grammatically correct, but just sounds wrong to me...)
I would be disappointed to lose Capcom support, but the ironic thing is that I haven't really cared about any of the games the company released on the GameCube so far, the only thing that really pleased me was Capcom vs. SNK 2, and if I owned a PS2 or a Dreamcast I wouldn't be all that impressed by it either.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I also heard about Capcom's fading support for the GameCube. I think we as Nintendo fans at least need to wait and see how Capcom's big five (Killer 7, Viewful Joe, RE 4, P.N. 03 and Dead Phoenix) turn out before we start flaming Capcom's decision. However I would hate to see Capcom's support die for the GameCube.

personally i wouldnt be surprised if capcom pulled support from gamecube but production studio four stayed with nintendo
i mean mikami likes the gamecube and he has already voiced his problems with the ps2
now capcom itself has been good to gamecube lately with the capcom 5 and re but really all the good games come from production studio 4
hopefully capcom does not pull support and if they do- hopefully mikami will stay with nintendo
i call the big one bitey.

Here's a nice quote, sure to sicken some-
Quote

The article also says that Xbox accounted for only 1.5 percent of Capcom's sales, but the company hopes to increase that particular figure.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense, considering the supposed reason is lower than expected sales on the GC.  Supporting a system that sells even LESS of their games seems a tad suspicious. Hmmmmm.....

What kind of "support" can they take from the Cube?  I mean aside from the RE series what has Capcom given the Cube that us Nintendo gamers would miss anyway?  The Capcom 5 looks promising but the PS2 is the console that has and will get most of Capcom's support.  I'll never understand this philosophy of "Xbox has low software sales, so lets stop making Gamecube games."  Capcom is already a multiplatform company, but if they want to go all the way then they should put all their games on all consoles.  Which means Devil May Cry, Onimusha, and Resident Evil for everybody.  EA does it and they're one of the top 3rd party developers in the industry right now, so its a proven formula that should work for Capcom.

From what i read at Magicbox, It appears that we just won't get exclusive RE anymore. They don't mention Capcom stopping to support the Cube, just that they wish to make Xbox a more profitable outlet for themselves and they will port Re to other systems.  So stop worrying.

I don't think Capcom's "retraction" was all that forceful. I am worried for the Cube, I do think it need adult games, and securing the Resident Evil series kept a lot of their adult gamers happy. That's why I bought my cube, and Capcom said at the time they wanted all the games in the series on the one platform.

I couldn't care less about PN03, for all the hype, that game always looked pretty shallow. I do hope that Killer 7 and Dead Phoenix will turn out well however.

If Nintendo went to some effort to secure the Resident Evil series, thus wooing over older gamers like myself, first time Nintendo buyers, just to let it drop and waste all the work they did.....I don't see how that's a positive thing. The old guard of Nintendo fans just don't seem to accept that there is now a growing percentage of Nintendo gamers who's primary reason for buying Nintendo are their adult games that they have produced or secured; Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness, Metroid, and the next Metal Gear Solid. It's kind of annoying to see Nintendo go to so much trouble to bring the sector of gamers over to the Cube, only to have people say "Who cares, we know that Nintendo owners only enjoy Nintendo first party." Nope, I bought my Cube to play Resident Evil, and so did a lot of other people I know from the Resident Evil community. That franchise is important to us.

Resident Evil 4 will still only be released as a GameCube installment, however the other four Capcom titles: Viewful Joe, Dead Phoenix, Killer 7 and P.N. 03 are going to debut on the GameCube, but the problem is they are not under any type of an agreement to stay on Nintendo hardware. All in all, if these titles do well on Nintendo's console look for Capcom to possibly port these games to other systems.

So much for games being exclusive to one console.

This is precisely why Nintendo fans don't like third parties. Capcom hasn't done anything yet, but if they have (or are going to) this is reason alone for them to land on the crap list. This is the perfect time to start spewing to the press "Uh yes... Nintendo sales are blah. We would like to blah reduce support for their Gamecube. Um, yeah..." while Nintendo has finally climbed out of a hole and is ruling March in hardware sales and game sales. This is what it means when someone can "ruin a wet dream." No one wants to be labeled as being like that... it's the worst kind of insult.

For now, I don't put any stock in it. Someone out there is just trying to steal Nintendo's thunder because everyone is burried in Nintendo hype. I would not be surprised to hear numerous rumors of Nintendo losing support, games, and junk. Even at the top of Nintendo's game right now, there's someone on this forum saying Nintendo should drop out of the console business if even for only one generation. The bottom line is that those who do not like Nintendo are going to be looking for ways to hurt their image and curtail this craze.

My original point is that third parties always seem to have a way to mess up the good. At the start of the Zelda preorder craze, we're all reminded of what's going wrong by EA chiming in to say they want to cut back the sports titles (Gamecube already doesn't get MVP baseball, the biggest sport in America....). We have to put up with third parties whining about sales. Why is it we rarely hear of Xbox losing support when their games sell even less than on Gamecube at times? SEGA supports Xbox despite lack of sales. We get a big fat warning from analysts because we're not in first place. Third parties are abbrassive to Nintendo in general. There's no wonder why we don't like them.

this is bs, the magazine is probably misunderstood.

capcom says this is utter bs.

nintendo sold the most everything for march...

ign says this is bs

i say this is bs..

xbox is having a hard time like GC did... xbox will get the same treatment... n i could see uk retailers repeating the GC thing with Xbox...

the video game market is going to crash... it is to hard for everyone....

ive been right on many occasins on this business stuff... even though i predict this it may not be true with corps having billions..

i dont think billy will tolerate such large losses.. he even raised  xbox live fee... and it is losing supporters...

the xbox gets some very same treatment---you just dont follow it.. n capcom is currently favouring gc and ps2 way more then microsoft.. ms probably doesnt look good to the eyes of a japanese company...

nintendo could very easily take capcom under its belt....

when miyamoto said gc would be easy to develop a long time ago.. he was right.. ps2 is more difficult then the N64 for gods sake!

you ppl just jump the gun so much.. some of the sega sports is returning even....

i think nintendo had a hidden plan.. and i was right.. and i also got flamed for it.. but i was right!!!!!
