Some people/regions say Coke for all flavors of soda pop.

Yeah people in Florida used to do that. Really obnoxious because you could never figure out exactly what they wanted. I worked at a McDonald's there and I can't tell you how many times someone asked for a meal with a Coke, I'd ring them up and then they would complain that I never asked them what type of "Coke" they wanted to drink.

I live in one of those places of legend where people say coke instead of soda or pop, and both of those words just sound weird to me.  Soda sounds a little less alien to me than pop does.  The Coca-Cola company employs secret shoppers in places like this sometimes to ask for Coke in places that don't serve it.  If they get served any other brand of cola without being asked, Coca-Cola sues the place.  It's all part of keeping their trademark.

The Dublin plant is the most famous for using real cane sugar in Dr Pepper, but there are other places, too.  Wikipedia even says my local bottling plant does it, but that's news to me.  I'll have to look into that.

One of my pet-peeves is going to a place where I don't know if they serve Coca-Cola or Pepsi.  I'll tell the waiter/waitress that I want "cola", to which they respond "We have Pepsi, is that okay?"

Well, Pepsi is a cola, isn't it?

What I hate worse than that UB, is when you go into a restaurant, ask for Mountain Dew and they say, we have Sprite, as if Sprite and Mt. Dew are even the same flavor. I then ask no what else do you got, cuz I hate Sprite, and they say all sarcastic, Coke Products, as if I am supposed to know what range of Coke products they carry, it usually pisses me off so I force them to go down the entire list of all beverages served at their institute.

you just made yourself sound like a bastard. I was at an ihop a few days ago and i asked for a cherry coke, i love cherry coke/pepsi. I get it and take a sip and it wasn't what i expected. they brought out their own "home-made" cherry coke, ie they pour granadine in a glass and fill it with coke.

It tasted fine once i stirred it a few times, but that initial taste surprised me because it tasted sort of concentrated. I think i'm gonna go home and mix grenadine with a Sprite and see how that taste... (i love grenadine, tequila sunrise's FTW)

Sprite and grenadine or tequila sunrises?

Whatever. If I ask for Mountain Dew and they reply we have Sprite, that is ignorance. If I ask what else do you have and they reply Coke Products, knowing all restaurants serve different varieties of said Coke Products, that tells me nothing so I need to know what all they carry as to make a decision. I don't care for Coke that much (or any other cola) and I hate Sprite, so I need to know if they have something on the menu I can tolerate. Otherwise I just drink water.

So it is perfectly acceptable to demand to know what drinks they offer, especially when around here they just put a Coke logo or a Pepsi logo on their menus and never elaborate on exactly what they have. When I say I get pissed, I do not mean I get mad at the server, just frustrated at their lack of willingness to cooperate.

i'm with you on this one. don't know why you're arguing though, unless i missed something i dont think anyone was arguing with you.
I always hate when i get offered Mountain dew because it taste nothing like sprite. If they offered a 7-up, that i can understand. I dont even like it when i ask for sprite and they offer Sierra Mist cuz that taste different too.

In their defense, they are both citrus flavored drinks, and Sprite is probably the closest thing they have to Mountain Dew, since Coke doesn't really have an answer to it.  They should still list all the options when you ask what else they have, though.

I can't say I've ever had the problem, though.  I don't care for citrus drinks in general, and I usually order water at restaurants.

No, Sprite is a Lemon Lime flavored drink, Mt Dew is not Lemon Lime. But Coke does have an equivalent. They call it Vault, it is not as good as MD, but it exists.

I said citrus, not lemon-lime.  MD is made with orange juice, but that's still citrus.  I didn't know Vault was from Coke.

Also Mello Yellow, but you don't see that as often...

But "citrus" is an awfully large category.  I wouldn't recommend Fresca to someone who wanted Sprite or Mountain Dew.  For that matter, Sunkist is Orange Flavored Soda and Orange is a Citrus Fruit... Would you be okay with someone recommending you Orange Soda instead of Mountain Dew?

actually yes because I would. I usually get Orange Soda if there is no Mt. Dew. I actually drink Code Red, but that is slowly fading away so I am left drinking the green one most of the time.

But see that is the point, MT Dew says it is a Citrus drink, Mellow Yellow is a perfectly acceptable alternative, but Sprite is Lemon Lime, the equivlenant of Seven Up and Sierra Myst. Not anything like Mt. Dew.

I'm just saying that they offered you the closest thing they had to what you asked for.  The fact that it was still miles away doesn't mean it wasn't the closest.

I personally don't think actual Coke tastes all that similar to other colas, be they Pepsi, RC, or some generic crap, either.

It may be the "closest thing", but it's not close.  If you go to a steakhouse and order a big ol' juicy steak, and they tell you they're out but they have some Beef Jerky in the back, it might be the "closest thing" (i.e.: both beef products), but it's not even worth mentioning.

Your analogy fails for the following reasons:

I don't order "steak" at a steakhouse.  I order a particular cut, such as rib eye, new york strip, or filet mignon.  These are all alternatives that are about as close to each other as different colas are.

A steakhouse that is completely out of steak would likely turn away people at the door, as steak is its big draw.  That's not the case with a soft drink.

The closest alternative in that case would be a non-steak meal from the menu, as it would still be a meal.  It's odd that you're insisting on the alternative also being beef when I suggested that the closest alternative to a drink flavored with orange juice might be one flavored with lime juice.

The argument is about not even having the item on the menu, not running out of it.

Please try again.

either way if they don't have Mt. Dew I would prefer if they said no, and tell me what they have offering Sprite, fine whatever, but I still won't drink it and will have them tell me what alternatives they do have. I usually end up avoiding restaurants that don't serve Mt. Dew anymore cuz it's easier that way.

I don't need to try again, I'm just simply stating, IMHO, that offering one citrus drink in place of another isn't really helpful, as the "citrus" category contains a huge range of flavors (Orange, Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, etc...) none of which really taste similar.  I think you'll be hard pressed to find someone who normally drinks one of the various "citrus" sodas (say, Mountain Dew, Sprite or Fresca) to accept another soda from a different part of the "citrus" family as a substitute.

If someone offered Sprite when you asked for Mountain Dew, they clearly weren't trying to be jerks, they were just finding what was in their mind the closest equivalent. Just because it isn't that close, doesn't mean they shouldn't offer. If you didn't like Sprite, apparently you don't, it was fully in your right to ask what they did have. Coke products as an answer was where these people failed. Obviously if you are serving Sprite, you are serving Coke products. The question at that point was not whether or not they carried Coke products, it was what Coke products were they carrying.

As such, the appropriate response would've been the list of beverages they offered.
