Late Night with Jimmy Fallon?!?
« on: May 15, 2008, 03:12:36 AM »
Former SNL cast member Jimmy Fallon has been chosen to replace succeed Conan O'Brien as host of NBC's Late Night show when Conan moves to the Tonight Show next year.

Now I don't mind Fallon as much as a lot of people do, and he seems a lot better suited to hosting a talk show than he was to sketch comedy (not saying much, you could probably say the same thing about him and Olympic gymnastics), but what immediately comes to my head when I read this is Jeff Zucker (President of NBC, and ironically someone Fallon did the impression for in his time on SNL) saying "Well, we obviously can't get anyone better than Conan, so why don't we just not even try?"

SERIOUSLY? THIS is your plan? No wonder NBC is in last place in ratings...

I love Craig Ferguson, he was great on The Drew Carey Show and he's great on the Late Late Show. The problem is I love Conan more and I always choose him. Once Conan moves to 11:30 I'll definitely watch both, especially when you consider the alternative.

Conan's the only late show host that I could stand watching the interviews with. Anyone can read a prepared monologue, Conan can think on his feet and make interviews with people I don't care about funny and interesting. Plus he wrote some great Simpsons episodes, including Homer Goes to College, one of the top ten episodes of a show with more than 400. This combination of talent in performing and writing comedy gives me no choice but to call him the funniest man who ever lived. Of course not everyone likes his style, and I've encountered plenty who think like GP. Since she's usually nice I'll spare her the fate of those others and let her retain the use of her right lung.

agreed in the fullest. Conan is the man. Even his one liner in the simpsons was comedy gold when he was a guest after getting the Late Night gig. It saddens me because i just KNOW once he starts hosting the Tonight Show he won't be able to be himself, because the Tonight Show is considered something of a Legacy and more respectable than any "Late" show. He'll have to act like Leno how Leno had to act like Carson.

Oh and Fallon = Fail. He was ok in SNL when he had a few sketches but wasnt a main cast member, then once he got in the spot light he just came off as an over-rated "NEW GENERATION" Adam Sandler rip-off.

It it means Rove is off TV here, and quits sullying the good name of Fremantle, then yes. It should have.

In my house Conan is immortalized in his guest role on the Simpsons.  If my brother or I do something worth celebrating like getting a strike in bowling it's not uncommon for us to start doing that little dance Conan did.  Upon seeing it the other brother or one of our friends or many of us will instinctively start to do the dance also in which case the first person to start the dance will say "Sit perfectly still!  Only I may dance!" and continue dancing by themselves.

In my house Jimmy Fallon is just known as that stupid douchehole who's crappy acting hurts a scene in Band of Brothers.  Thankfully it's just a cameo.

Anyone can read a prepared monologue,

Psh.  From what I've seen, Leno can't even do that.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

He can do it, but usually the ones he gets aren't any good so it just looks like he can't.

I'm not retarded.  I don't need him to repeat every punch line three times.  I got it the first time.  I didn't laugh because it wasn't funny.  Repeating it a little louder isn't going to help.

He must be good, not only can he read a monologue, he can read it multiple times.

Seriously, though, the only thing of Leno's I'm going to miss is Headlines. What sucks is he's a really funny guy, just not on the Tonight Show, and I'm afraid that that's going to happen to Conan. Letterman seems to maintain quality in the 11:30 slot (though, like Conan, not everyone likes his style) and he had Conan's job before he went there, so I'll hope for the best, and try to catch as many Late Nights I can in the final year.

I LOVE Conan. He is hilarious to me. But Jimmy Fallon? He was never even remotely funny on SNL. He pretty much ruined every sketch he was in AND could single handedly bring down the performance of everyone around him. He might be able to pull off a talk show, but we'll have to see.

Now, Carson, I actually liked. The show was bad, but I found him as a host to be likable. The show was just poorly constructed and he never possessed the skill as a host to make it work.

For realz. It always pissed me off when he'd be the ONLY one cracking up at the sketch he's freaking in while everyone else is doing their best not to get distracted

Weekend Update was the best example of that. He could bust out laughing before Tina Fey even giggled. Eventually, she would laugh, too, but not before Fallon was laughing hysterically.

Jimmy Fallon is a tool and I don't understand why anyone has ever liked him.  My girlfriend does and we have been in numerous arguments because I dared to point out how shitty he was.

They've been last in ratings for a few years now. That actually reminds me of something Conan once did. When the ratings came out and showed NBC in 4th place he had foam fingers like you'd see at a ball game but with 4 fingers sticking up with the NBC logo and the words "We're #4" printed on them and handed them out to his entire audience.
