360: Worth it?
« on: April 29, 2008, 03:48:59 PM »
A store here offers the XBox 360 Arcade (you know, the replacement for the Core with a wireless controller and a memory card) with GTA4 for 200 Euros (the price of the 360 Arcade itself). Considering GTA4 costs 70 Euros that'd put the console at 130 Euros (though I guess it might work better to just sell GTA on ebay to recoup that money and spend it on cheaper things). I'm pretty much considering that now but I'm unsure if it's actually a good idea. To find games I'd buy on gamerankings I had to go into top 100 view (meaning the top 50 didn't contain one, except for SOTN but that's just a downloadable thing, not an exclusive). Is this not the console for me or is there more worthwile stuff that didn't get rated highly?

it sounds semi-worth it to me. I would bet on whether you feel like you have the money.  Then realize there will be another time.  a large expense is easily forgettable, so don't panic if you pay more at a later date.

It sounds like a deal! ... As long as the thing works. What sort of a warranty do you get with it?

If you don't buy it now, paying the extra 70 later won't mean much a month after you buy it.  I would only do it if you feel you have the money and think you could play it now.  It does sound like a good deal.

It sounds like a good deal, but if there aren't any games for the system he wants, then why bother?  I wouldn't pay $10 for the Mona Lisa if I were blind and didn't think I could sell the painting for a profit.

KDR's question is are there any good games that aren't in GameRanking's top 100 Xbox 360 games that have flown under his radar.

What was that Pikmin-style dungeon game for the 360 that came out last year?  I remember hearing some pretty decent things about that, and it seems like it might be up your alley.  EDIT:  The game I'm thinking of is Overlord.

Umm.... umm..... wow. If gamerankings can't find a 100 title on the XBox 360 you'd want, I'd be hard pressed to think of anything that might have slipped under the radar.

Top 50, there were some in the 100. Well, I'd buy Gears of War and Dead Rising but those haven't been released here since they got the highest rating and you know how console manufacturers are...

I do recall hearing about games on the 360 I'd like occassionally but I can't remember them.

Most games on 360 are also available for PC. The only reason you would get a 360 is if you don't want to spend 600 to 1000 euros rigging up your PC so that it can play these games, unless of course you don't mind the lower resolutions.

If you are getting a 360, the hard-drive is a must if you intend to play online.

If there's nothing that really interests you in terms of games that are out now, how about in the future?  What genres do you particularly like?  Here's a list of the bigger titles I know are coming out within the next year (here in the U.S., at least)...

Soul Calibur IV
Infinite Undiscovery
Resident Evil 5
Alan Wake
Fable 2
Banjo-Kazooie 3
Prototype
Tales of Vesperia
Too Human

Yeah, I want EDF but that alone isn't enough to get a console over (maybe if it was a proper step up from EDF2 but from what I read 3 is one step forward, one step back) :P.

Basically I hate sports, racing and Tom Clancy. RPGs are kinda discouraged because I rarely play them very far though it might be worth a try. I'd try to get PC games for the PC because they cost 20-30 Euros less that way plus have higher resolution and more control options (if the 360 gamepad is the best then I'll play with a 360 gamepad, got one of those though I never use it, analog sticks are useless on a PC). I don't mind braindead shooters like EDF or Hellgate despite the press complaining about them to no end (in these days it's almost innovative to just have a CRAPLOAD of enemies to shoot at once instead of 3-4 "smart" ones...).

Online play is unlikely, while I might conect the thing to the network I don't think I'll pay to play online.

Caliban, I don't think I'd ever have to set my PC to something lower than 640x480 at 60Hz no matter how demanding the game is :P (if I had to go to 320 the CPU will probably bottleneck loooong before the GPU does). We've only got one 100Hz TV and it's not the gaming TV, besides, interlacing looks horrible on that thing (when we played Soul Calibur 2 on it you could see the interlacing on fast movements...) and I don't think it supports progressive input signals.

Gee KDR, you put forth a very convincing argument NOT to buy it. LOL.

Overlord's on PC too. It's a decent little linear puzzle-action title, probably a high 70s.

Also Overlord is coming to the PS3 with the 10 dollar 360 downloadable expansion built in and exclusive multiplayer modes on and offline.

While the consensus is that 360 has a great library and horrible hardware you should really look at what games are on the platform that you want or consider a PS3 if you want a console to supplement your Wii.

Overlord is NO Pikmin.  It's pretty fun and has character, but the levels are often confusing and poorly-designed.  I spent hours in that dang hobbit hole trying to figure out what I was supposed to do.

360 games that interest me:

Eternal Sonota
Oblivion
Blue Dragon
Phantasy Star Universe
Crackdown
Soul Caliber
Quake 4
Kameo
Armored Core 4
Condemned 1 and 2
Lost Planet
Assassins Creed

Games on Ps3 that interest me

Gran Turismo
VF5

So far PS3 is not an option.

Those are the only games I have seen or played on 360 that I liked.
Still not enough to justify the expense/risk involved. But enough games to encourage my 360 owning friends to buy so I can play.

I don't know if any of that helps but those are the only games I could think of I didn't hate or that I did really like.

At least 4 of the games on your 360 list are on PS3 too.

I counted more than that theres:
Oblivion
Eternal Sonata (getting ported)
Soul Caliber 4
Armored Core 4
Condemned 2
Lost Planet
Assassin's Creed

KDR, you should really evaluate the games libraries on what platform since if theres no interest in games on the platform there is no point investing in something that your not going to play. I think the PS3 is a decent platform for games and the game that I got addicted on for the PS3 is warhawk, so much that I bought both expansion packs (omega dawn, broken mirror).

Also you have to remember that the PS3 is the only console that has absolutely no region locks on games, so if Germany doesn't get a game due to strict rating or want to import a Japanese game you can import with no hitches. Also isn't the only reason the 360 is cheaper because Microsoft is cutting the price due to strong competition against Sony and Nintendo?

Yeah but it's not easy to see what's on the system though I guess store shelves would be enough of an indicator as anything that isn't there is probably out of reach anyway...

Lack of region locks on the PS3 is nice (though I don't import that many games due to four weeks shipping time) but that's about it, AFAIK it has a weaker library of games, when I hear about games I'd like that I can't play they're usually on the 360 (often multiplatform of course but if everything else is even the 360 wins on cost), when I hear about PS3 exclusives they tend to be of the "hyped up, fell short" variety. Plus I already have a PS2 (not that PS3s play PS2 games anymore...).

I don't think I've emphasized just how important price is to me, a 400 Euro console is not just out of my budget, it's a total waste of money as the cost of the console itself is dead cost that doesn't benefit me. I'm not even considering the 360 standard pack (the one with the HDD, dunno what it was called) due to price. The 200 Euro Arcade comes with a 70 Euro game so that's only 130 Euro dead cost. The same bundle costs 440 Euros on the PS3 so a total of 370 Euros of dead cost. Difference is 240 Euros of dead cost, that's a lot of games. My monthly budget for videogames is 130 Euros ATM.
