Random thoughts on WW (few minor spoilers)
« on: April 01, 2003, 10:14:31 PM »
Just a collection of random stuff.  I'd say if you've played the game more than a few hours, none of this is a spoiler (although, honestly, I don't think any of them are, with the exception of the labeled ones.  These things are mostly just my random thoughts about the game).

1. There are true-to-life constellations in the night sky.  Specifically I see Orion.  I dunno too many but I know that one when I see it.

2. Miyamoto sure seems to have a thing for water lately.

3. I also think he's been watching some Miyazaki films.  The little forest-y creatures seem inspired from Princess Mononoke.

4. Found a nice way to exploit the travel lengths, but it requires a Wavebird controller.  You set your ship in the direction you want and hold the controller in that direction (probably "up" in most cases, since you want to maintain the fastest speed).  Once you are in this position, turn the controller off and on quickly.  When it turns on, the control stick's neutral position is fully in the "up" position, meaning you can put the controller down and your ship will maintain speed to your destination.  Of course, be ready to pick it back up and reset it if you run into some sort of trouble, such as the octo's.

5. My GOD.  The number of side quests and things to do is amazing.  It rivals Animal Crossing and smashes the hell out of GTA.

6. Would have been nice, when bombing on the ship, if you could lock on, instead of having to manually aim.

7. Also would have been nice to have context sensitive item selection, meaning you automatically get different items assigne to X/Y/Z dependent on situation.  For example, when you run across a fish, you should switch to bait automatically.  If you slow down for treasure, the hook should come up automatically.  This option could always prove a pain, so you would be able to turn it off.

8. Otherwise, allow you to setup a few customized item menus, say one for boating, one for fighting, etc., and then you could somehow switch instantaneously.

9. The game also takes a page from the Megaman Legends series, in my opinon, for a few reasons.  One, the idea of a LOT of water and a few islands.  I know that theme is far more prevalent in MML, but it's kinda present here too.  Two, I could swear I hear some of the same sounds in WW, although it's been a long while so I could be wrong.  Three, ....well I'd say it but it's kind of a spoiler, so you've been warned.  When you raise the Temple of Gods, there's some markings on the outside of the tower that resemble some of the glyphics from MML, but that could just be me.

10. Why can't I ever find Beedle when I need him.  I got his locations, but MAN, he's never near the islands.  Super annoying.  Plus, half the time he's not carrying what I need....

11. *Minor sidequest spoiler* If you talk to the "sad" girl on the steps in Windfall, you can get a sidequest to photograph something that is dear to her.  She says it is perfectly round and pale.  I could have SWORN it would be the moon (in full state obviously), but I was wrong.  DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT tell me what the answer is.  I'll figure it out.

12. *Fairly large spoiler****AVOID****  I find it quite funny that, despite not having done the Tower of Gods, I've already gotten two Triforce Charts.  Lol.  Since I decided I'd rather sail around and see what there was to do, I ended up finding two of them.  Haha.

13. Ok, in Windfall, the rich dood.  He wants me to rescue his daughter, and if you talk to him enough, he says he'll help fund you.  He then throws coins into his pots and says to find them.  So I broke up the three he wanted and he got pissed.  Sigh, stupid old man....

14. *Minor sidequest spoiler* I did the Flying Birdman competition.  I eventually got 263 feet/yards/whatever.  I wanted to see if I could get anything else, so I did it again.  I ended up hitting my banner and fell down, but it still credited me with beating my old distance, even though it says I went 260.  GG game.

15. *Minor spoiler*  I swear the magician enemies are Toucan Sam.  And I find that sad, because I'm killing TOUCAN SAM.

Guess thats all for now.

For #4, do you really have to hold up on the control stick? I just set the wind in the direction I was going, angled myself in that direction, and set the controller down (I don't have a Wavebird). The wind carrierd me quite quickly.

If you watch the water "splashing off" your ship, you can tell you have a speed increase by holding the stick down.

I hate sidequests, it is one of the main things I hate about the Zelda series.

Hahah! Gotta love #15

some additional gripes:

A. The Ghost Ship was rather complicated to get to, but extremely easy to beat once inside. Imo, that ship should've been the same difficulty as a full-fledged dungeon.

B. No bombchus *sniff*

C. When you have to collect the triforce shards, each shard should've been sealed away in some temple.

D. Needed more significant side stories (in Majora's Mask, a lot of the side stories really helped develop the world of Termina, because they were very well done, and very detailed).

E. Forget the boat, you should've been allowed to ride on Valoo! Who cares about red lions, when you can have red DRAGONS.

F. Not that much new music (several were just remixes of LttP and OoT music). MM had the same problem come to think of it.

G. A lot of the really time-consuming quests were rather unrewarding in the end. Either you got a simple treasure chart, some rupees, or (at best) a piece of heart. What about those OoT-caliber cutscenes?

H. Not enough songs to conduct. At least the Sun Song makes a comeback.

some additional thanks:

I. Thank you for not setting a time limit for most of the dungeon challenges!

J. ...for not limiting the game to three consecutive days.

K. ...for the gallery dedication (see Nintendo Fanboys thread in the Fast Forward forum).

L. ...for the awesome character designs.

M. ...for a flawless final boss fight.

N. ...for living up to the good ol' Nintendo tradition.

Yeah, Animal Crossing is ONLY side-quest type things (obviously they're not true side-quests, but they mimic them).

#1- Other then orions' belt you can also see another with seven main stars in the shape of a frying pan called the big dipper or the small dipper I'm not sure which one is it but you will see that constelation for sure.

#11- I think it's a guy and not a girl.

#99- Pay close attention to what Medli (the flying species) is wearing, she has on her front cloths the symbol for biochemical hazards.

I saw that frying pan constellation too, but I don't think its either of the dippers.  The dippers are a bit less obvious, and have a side-view.  I wonder what that constellation is supposed to be.  A mirror?  Anyway, it's very cool.

This is a nice topic (thanks a bunch for labeling the spoilers).

Minor spoiler: Sidequest answer

I eventually figured it out before you guys told me (which I asked you not to do ), because the character says "What is pale about this?"

After I made it into the NIntendo gallery, the guy said he needed color photos.  So I assumed that there was some way to do that.  Eventually Lenzo tells you that you need to get the firefly thingy, which I did, and behold, color photography.

At this point I did the moon thing.  Nice little sidequest, kind of easy to figure out.  I like that sort of thing in my games tho.

If that's the case, then Din is the biohazard b/c that logo *could possibly be interpreted as spoiler* is also on Din's Pearl.

Anyways, I have a few things I'd like to add just cuz this if a forum and that's what you do in a forum.
1. This is more of a mathematical/transdimensional question. I realize that MM took place in some alternate realityor dimension (I seem to remember it being a reflection of Hyrule or something). Anyways, Tingle was 35 in that game. According to his statuette in the Nintendo Gallery (which is one of my favorite parts to the game. Seriously I'm addicted to it.) Tingle is still 35! Is this a typo and it should have said 135? Or did the genius who imprisoned him put him in a cryogenic freezing chamber from which he thawed just as link foolishly saved him? Whatever. It really doesn't matter.

2.Back to the Nintendo Gallery, I have had TWO statues just APPEAR! One was Zelda and the other has skipped my mind. Anyways, I CERTAINLY did not take her picture and I KNOW for a fact that I did not get her picture in the form of a Legendary pictograph. This statue appeared *spoiler* after zelda was kiddnapped. Is Ganon taking pictures of Zelda and giving them to the Nintendo Gallery guy?*end spoilers* Has anyone else experienced this seemingly magically appearing statues?

Actually it's not on Din's Pearl. From all three pearls to collect Naryu's pearl is the one that which symbol most resembles to the symbol on Medli's front but it's still not the same symbol. I have actually went researching if i could find the same symbol on other enigmatic characters in this game and found that Medli's predecessor as a guardian which was a Zora has the biohazard symbol. If anyone wants to see proof of this go to www.zeldauniverse.net and select from the left menu "The Wind Waker" from "Game Info",next select from the right menu "Items/Equipment" to see images of the pearls or select "Characters" to see images from the characters, all you have to do is to scroll down until you find what you want. Identifying the symbol on Medli and the princess Zora could a little dificult but it is there.

Not really.  The Princess Mononoke ones are white, have clicky heads, and are more human shaped.  The Koroks have leaf masks, different colored bodies, and resemble half tree, half human things.  Their eyes are vaguely similar, though, if that's what you were referring it.

I like the boat, and I don't bother holding down forward.  I just clean my room or whatever while it goes.

Locking on while in ship would be nice, but manual is fine.  It's just annoying that you have to stop to shoot, though.

I like side quests.  I've spent at least 6 hours so far just getting my map filled up and solving puzzles on all the islands.

I like the wizard bird dudes, but they annoyed the heck out of me prior to getting the bow.

One thing I really like?  **sort of spoilers, but not bad** 99 bombs, baby.  Not to mention 5000 rubies!  Oh yeah!

One question: For the ghost ship, do you have to do it for every single island it appears at, or just once?  I haven't actually even seen it yet, and I'm curious about how much I have to do.

One thing about the ghost ship. You need a special chart to enter it or you will just pass through it. Once you have the chart it's easy.

I said rubies, but it's rupees.  Just wanted to correct my mistake.

More cool stuff: The bags, particularly the spoils and bait bags.
**spoilers, sort of**
I like the idea of collecting lots of one type of item and giving them away to obtain something or play some sort of game.  The bait bag is also a good idea for the fish stuff, and being a seagull is also great fun.  The delivery bag is good too, it just doesn't offer anything very new.
**end the sort of spoilers**
