Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Boss Battle mode on Very Hard +
« on: March 28, 2008, 11:45:08 AM »
Hey guys, anybody got any strategies for beating the Boss Battle mode on Very Hard? I can get to Tabuu with a 0% damage counter, and get him down a ways in damage, but he inevitably does his "one-hit-kill" thing, and no matter what I do, I am sent flying off the stage.

I had this idea that, using Pokémon Trainer, I could wait till he was about to do the attack, then switch pokémon right then and there, thus making myself basically invincible during the attack. Unfortunately, the attack lasts too long and blasts my new pokémon to kingdom come when he flies out of the ball. So...

Any tips? Has anyone beat this?? I tried for probably two hours, and couldn't, and I'm totally frustrated with it. (though I'm better with Pokemon Trainer now!)

Stand/duck right under him or run full speed at him if your far away to counter the shock wave thingy, you still get sent flying but not as much, and if you hit him a few time before as he's teleporting it stop the attack altogether.

I think you can sidestep dodge the shock waves.

You can sidestep dodge the shock waves, it's the only method that I've found is guaranteed to work... granted you get the timing right.

Yep, you'll have to get good at this. I tried to do a Pokémon switch one time to get around it... but my timing was slightly off and Squirtle flew off the screen nearly before he even materialized. :-( Dodging is the best method, although there is a lot of pressure knowing if you miss one you will have to do the whole thing over again.

For me, I use a side step to avoid the first shock wave, then pokemon change to avoid the other two. Other than that I just do the whole rock smash thing until he dies. Cheap, but it's the most effective thing I've found from personal experience and the web.

Thanks Dzapa, and everyone else. I did eventually beat it with the Pokemon Trainer and his cadre of beasties, and I now have the "roll-dodge the red circles" thing down-pat.

Doing so let me come to really appreciate the differences between the three pokemon... I came to find each one had a specialty towards certain bosses - though I still did rely on Charizard a lot for the mega-HP bosses. (ex - I can routinely beat Master or Crazy Hand without taking damage with Squirtle, Venusaur is my Ridley specialist, and Charizard is my heavy hitter for bosses with lots of HP). The literally ~8 hours I spent trying to beat this mode (yes, I'm lame and also suck - a mean combination) also allowed me to really learn the bosses' patterns, and I've now beaten the mode with everyone to get that dumb trophy or whatever it was. That is time I will never get back.

Hurray!

Any pointers for that thing you fight on the Halberd?  If I could reduce the amount of damage I take from that fight, I might have a chance of beating this mode on Intense.

When it shoots missiles, hide behind the boss so they hit him.  I've only played on normal, but if all of them connect it takes out like a quarter of his health meter.

These bosses suck.  Event 51 was way more fun.

Event 51 (Melee) rocked the socks off of Event 41 (Brawl).  Was anyone else as disappointed as me that there's not a Giga Bowser fight in Brawl?  :(

So, someone ban vudu.  It seems he's provoking bots.  Finally, the pieces of the puzzles are falling in place.

I'll also add some tips in a moment.

Edit: I wanted to sneak that in there before bot was banned, but was legitimately going to post in this thread when I saw it was bumped.

The best way to fight Taboo is simple:  Not on Boss Battles.  It's quicker to get a ton of experience playing him in adventure mode on intense, up until you can kill him with one character consistently, where you've learned the timing to dodge all of his attacks.  When you do that, it's merely a matter of making it to him on Boss Battles Intense.

I'd say the same thing for other bosses, but some are tricky, like Rayquaza and Duon.  Of course, the most important thing is not to get hit!  If you can avoid getting hit, you'll be able to make it farther.  Rayquaza, if you're careful, is easy to dodge, just don't get over-agressive.  Quick physicals, like Ness's down tilt, can tear off chunks of health faster than anything else.  Experiment a few times with all of your character's attacks to see which ones do the most damage and allow you an easy way to dodge whatever attack might happen.

Duon is more of a problem, a place where Ness also cam in handy, because it's difficult to hit him without getting hit back.  As Ness or Lucas, you can absorb his energy burst shot that makes a quarter or half circle, depending on how he charges.  Projectiles can work for some characters, but most should just run in, attack a few times, and then escape before the next attack starts.

Porky is another tough character, suriviving him can sometimes be a matter of luck.  When he's moving after you, and his steps are attacks, jump over him and use projectiles.  When he's standing still, attack as quickly as possible with a strong attack.  He's one of the bosses where you'll almost always take damage, because he's built with a few unavoidable attacks, which is just terrible.

TIP: Don't do this, it isn't worth it.
