I can't believe so many people liked the 30 day deadline, most of the complaints I've heard about the first game were about that.

Believe it or not, we're still hardcore gamers. Even me.

You guys are crazy. The second game is so much better and so much more stuff do to. The first one was fun but it was very short(like mini game short to me). I rented it and beat it twice and I could not fathom to buy the first game. I also thought taking out the timer was a huge improvement. Everything I did not like about the first game was fixed or made better on Pikmin 2. I don't think Pikmin did terribly, it sold well in japan, not as good in NA but it was good enough for Nintendo do make another for us and release it over here. I am trying to look for numbers but cannot find any.

I guess everyone has their own opinion. I think achievements could solve some of these problems by having missions or something that have to be done in a certain time for people that like them.

I mean from hardcore gamers, even in the reviews. Most of them were complaints that the game ended too soon, that got everything going great and then ended too soon.

I can't gush enough about Pikmin 2. To me, it stands with F-Zero GX and SSBM as the three best Cube games, and I would love a Wii sequel.

I imagine a lot of people who really stongly disliked the 30 day deadline never bothered to play Pikmin 2 in the first place and thus aren't going to post in a thread called "Pikmin Lovefest".

This is however also the first time I've heard anyone praise it.

Though you're probably right this is so unfair.  The Gamecube PERIOD was a financial disaster.  It isn't fair for Pikmin to be judged based on that.
Actually it is since Pikmin played a BIG part in defining GameCubes initial image. "That kiddy Pikmin thing" was all I ever heard GC described as for the first few months.

Pikmin 2 was inferior because it lacked a time limit.  Now, this is coming from somebody who absolutely detests time limits in almost every situation, but the 30 day limit really made the first Pikmin special.  Every time I let a pikmin die in the first game my heart broke a little, so I would fight my hardest to keep every little critter alive.  In Pikmin 2 they all seemed too expendable since I could just dedicate a few days to harvesting and then go back to the actual game.  The balance between completing goals and getting more Pikmin was lost.

Both games are fantastic though.  The first Pikmin is easily one of the greatest games on the Gamecube, and the second most charming piece of software I have ever seen (first place: Animal Crossing)

But Pikmin isn't kiddy at all. The stark contrast between the Pikmin and the photorealistic background is one of the best artistic choices in any videogame, ever. And it's not kiddy.

It certainly isn't kiddy by any definition of the word that I know, but I will say that the game was not DIFFICULT by any means, until the very end.

"not kiddy" is still just hindsight by the gaming minority who invested their time with the titles.  You can't deny the franchise's candy-coated shell, which always comes front and center when you begin to pitch/market the franchise.

^ Pikmin drowning was one of the most horrific sounds in any video game ever.

I got lucky recently and picked up pikmin 2 in a 2 for $20 deal at a rogers video near my house that was closing. I loved Pikmin 1 but I do think it was a little short. Pikmin 2 encouraged me to explore my surroundings more, take my time and get things right. Pikmin 2 also had a lot more monsters and cool bosses. If anything took away from pikmin 2 it was the endless caverns and the mandatory saves between levels. I agree with Mr.Jack about the bland environments of most of the caves as well.

One reason that the time-0limit of 30 days was great was because it made you weight the lives of your pikmin. Is it worth it to sacrifice/risk your pikmin's lives to get a job done faster? Players had to make ethical decisions in the first pikmin game that were removed from the second: they had to weigh the lives of their pikmin in terms of time and utility. It was genius.

Oddly enough the time limit had no effect on me feeling bad about losing Pikmin.  If I lost too much I just restarted the day.  I felt bad about losing Pikmin because I became attached to them.  In most games you control the character getting killed but in Pikmin you don't.  You f*cked up and YOU didn't die, that little creature did.  I felt especially bad when Pikmin died due to a clear mistake on my part.  Pikmin will get eaten in a battle but accidentally having a Pikmin drown because I wasn't careful enough walking next to a stream is my fault and it didn't have to happen.

Plus the Pikmin are helping you and dying for you.  They're so loyal you can order them to obvious suicide and they'll do it without thinking twice.  Plus, you know, they're cute and they scream when they die.

I didn't see the Pikmin as just a videogame resource like ammo or something that I didn't want to lose because it would affect my performance in the game.  I was attached to these AI creatures and I think that was an intentional part of the design.  Even kamikaze missions with white Pikmin poisoning an enemy made me feel uncomfortable.

I'm the same way in game with permanent deaths like Fire Emblem.  Some people don't want such-and-such character to die because they're got great stats and such.  I don't want to lose that character because he's been a companion of mine throughout the game.

Oh god, it KILLED me if I accidentally left pikmin behind at the end of the day. That's the WORST POSSIBLE THING that I could do as a Pikmin player. It's like the greatest crime in Nintendo Game history.

I got a little careless as I was getting through Pikmin 1.  The reason was because Pikmin can be REALLY stupid sometimes.  After awhile I started not feeling bad for drowning pikmin.

The 30 day limit is the reason I haven't finished Pikmin 1. I'm on a stage where I can't complete a rocket part retrieval in just one day and I don't want to waste an extra day cause I may need them in the future.

I should restart Pikmin rather than buying Brawl.

Well it depends really one what day your on, the 30 day limit is not nearly as limiting as it feels because you have several days where you might get 2 or 3 parts.

Not to say that I am for the 30-day limit, I should play the second one and decide for myself first...
