Is there a trick to lag free battles?
« on: March 10, 2008, 08:04:34 PM »
Seriously, I have yet to have one single playable battle today~!  I have a good internet connection~!  I have tried several times to play my brother who lives only an hour away and we both experience heavy lag, sometimes to the point where its just static images.  I talked to some people at school and both said they have had little to no lag.  What am I doing wrong?  Is this just a one time case or is it just Nintendos servers being bogged down by the huge jump in connections?

Turn off your computer(s) and anything on your network might help....

Although your lucky, I've only been able to play 1 match total... DAMN YOU ERROR 85010!!! Stop disconnecting Brawl :@

I'm in the great white north, and I have had no lag problems. I've played against Svevan, Pale, Myxtica_Azn (sp?), Nile Boogie (actually there were 2 Niles at one time lol), and uh yeah that was pretty much who I had a lot of fun playing brawl with until now.

How many times do I have to say:  Turn off everything else you have connected to the freaking internet.  I'll get Pale to put it in the thread about it. It can increase the speed a surprising amount for some reason.

It's a fighting game online, it's going to have lag by it's very nature.  I would say that if you want a better chance at playable speeds get one of those USB broadband adaptors and run it wired.

This is interesting, because when I played against you the lag was pretty bad... playable after I got used to it, but pretty bad.

Also, turning everything off that's connected to the internet makes ZERO sense.

Routers are designed to handle this stuff.  The wii doesn't know any better about any other connected devices.

It would take me a half hour to disconnect my house and a half hour to reconnect it.  NOT A SOLUTION.

Oh, so you didn't have a lot of fun playing those matches with me? =P

I've only REALLY experienced lag when playing With Anyone. I didn't notice any with Smash Brother, or with the couple matches with Caliban and Nile.

Hm interesting detail indeed. I have no idea then.

I knew I was forgetting someone, but I just couldn't remember and I was going to add that to my post lol. My apologies. We will have double the fun next time, my promise.

THANK YOU~!  That was my argument all day to everyone who told me to shut off my pc and everything else in the apartment it makes no sense.  My thoughts are just that the servers are bogged down and will get better after people stop flooding them.  However this doesnt still make sense seeing as how people at school who live just across the street or blocks away, have no lag issues. . . .

I have not been able to play a single match online, friend or otherwise.

I think Nintendo hosts all the matches, but I plan to do some tests later

It does make zero sense.  I know.  I've talked to Shecky about it.  However, I've sat there and connected my computer to the router in online matches, watched it slow to a crawl for about fifty seconds, then disconnect it, and it sped up much faster instantly.  I don't care if it makes sense or not.  Perhaps some routers give low priority to the Wii.  Just try it.  If you're getting low speeds, it's worth a shot and shouldn't take much time, right?

I played 2 matches today with Svevan and Nile while I was the only one in the house and all other computers were off: it was unplayable with about a second delay on every action.

I tried switching from Bowser to Mario (since Bowser has some built in lag anyway) and it didn't help. Someone in my other thread said they played on a T1 and STILL had lag, so I don't think it's my connection.

Also, sadly, it seems like the latency indicator appears at random: it's there (and yellow) for one player who has yet to register me but when I went into Svevan's game, it wasn't there, but it appeared after I came out.

Same thing with Megaybyte's game: no latency indicator (though I never successfully joined that one).

I'm hoping Nintendo just needs to iron the kinks out of this. Not being able to play Brawl online after looking forward to it is pretty crushing, actually.

Also, FYI, if you create the game, you probably won't have lag, but you might notice your opponents are a bit sluggish to react.

I am able to turn my wireless connection off in two seconds, but I'm on a mac and not everyone around here has that luxury. Also, I have NO idea if it helped, I was lagging too, but it felt like we were playing in a 0.5 slow motion mode.

Guys I found out that WAVEBIRDS can interfere with the router~!  I changed mine to a different channel and I had fairly lag free battles with my brother last night~!  I will need to try out the online more tonight to further prove this theory but it did fix a lot for me.

Turn off cell phones, don't run the microwave, cover your house in mylar foil, and turn off your neighbor's routers.

I don't use wavebirds, but I'm going to run a wire from my Wii to the router anyway. I'd do just about anything to get my ping down to decent levels...

Nintendo should pay to run direct fiber lines to all of our houses.

I have a high gain antenna that is normally connected to my pc with the standard antenna connected to the router. Last night I switched the configuration and placed the high gain antenna on the router and the short one on the pc card. I had to move the antenna around (it's in my basement pretty much directly under my entertainment center but furtehr away from my desk and the computer. Wow was that explanation long enough? Anyway, I played four matches last night completly free of lag. These were "Play Anybody" matches not Friend Code matches which I have yet to get to play due to timing issues with my friends. I have also watched a couple of matches in Spectator Mode with no lag either so there, thats my story.

If they can mobilize an army to hunt down pirates in 2nd world countries, I think they could mobilize Verizon into getting FIOS everywhere, yes.

For testing, I ran a SHIELDED network cable from my Wii's USB adapter DIRECTLY into my DSL modem, meaning that my Wii is the ONLY piece of hardware on the network and I still experienced some pretty terrible lag, especially when a 3rd person joined my game.

I hope to hell this is Nintendo's servers and not indicative of what I can expect forever...
