Well you can't really compare scores that are seven years apart, but that is less than they gave Melee.

Well I would normally complain that this game didn't get a perfect ten, but it isn't worth my breath.

It's also .2 lower than Galaxy, which is another comparison I'm looking at.

Which seems quite fair, Mario Galaxy was an amazing, near flawless experience.

I agree, and I doubt I'd agree with a score higher than Galaxy. Also I think this game is much more likely than Galaxy to get a few lower reviews, people mad about clones or something. I still can't believe that Galaxy managed to not get a single review less than a 9 (or the equivalent).

The trouble with Brawl is that it is a tough game to review, as with many fighters. It depends how much you weigh all the components of the game. A game like SMG is pretty easy to score because it focuses on one thing for the most part. From reading the review, it appears Matt dinged it a bit for SSE, but stated the rest of the game is pretty much brilliant. Now I haven't played it (Can't wait) but I would probably knock it down to a 9.5 because of the roster and MAYBE the SSE which I heard is OK, but not amazing.

SSE is a cool idea, but I'll probably do the same thing with it that I did with Adventure in Melee, play it a few times, and then again every once in a while, but spend most of my single player time with Classic and Event modes, or even just fights against computer opponents (which I suppose can be Wi-Fi battles now). 9.5 is a great score, as we've mentioned it's .2 less than Galaxy and the same as Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3, I have no doubt that it will be an amazing game, and I am eagerly awaiting Sunday (especially since it's also the opening day for a local indoor football team I like and my birthday).

Nintendo Power gave the original Super Smash Bros. a 7.8, so I've learned to not demand perfect scores for games I like. Anything above 9.3 or so, I'm happy.

I think even taking those things into account, they are very minor in the grand scheme of the game. For me the game is 100% about multiplayer replayability. If the game outshines Melee in every facet, then it is good enough for me to give it a 10, because Melee was a 10.

Well as I said it depends on how you want to weigh, considering IGN Wii's stricter reviewing guidelines a 9.5 seems more than fair, and as stated it is on the same level as TP and MP3 both AMAZING games. Not to mention Melee got a 9.6 and it was done by Fran not Matt.

As for the score I was expecting this. I mean if you enjoy the game isn't the score irrelevant.

Insanolord what are games that you purchased that got ok scores but you liked it more than the reviews led you to believe? For me it was P.N.03 and sonic riders last gen as for this gen Mario & Sonic and Red Steel.

On the Wii so far I've enjoyed Alien Syndrome (which I already mentioned), Heatseeker, and Kororinpa: Marble Mania. I also thought Red Steel was better than most people gave it credit, it got lower scores because it promised more than it delivered, but what we got was a good experience and I hope the developer gets the time it needs for the sequel.

The developer has had tons of time.  Whether it has the skills & talent or not is another story.

Before it all gets started:

1) No major gaming publication considers a "10" to be a perfect score.

2) No major gaming publication wants their review scores to be compared, either to their own reviews or to someone else's.

Scores are merely value scales, and most proper gaming publications rate games based on what you were promised, and what you actually get. Comparing scores unravels the stupidly delicate balance of the asinine modern review system.

I'm glad 1up has switched to grades, maybe other publications will make similar steps to undermine their own scoring, thereby making scores obsolete or at least peripheral.

I would like to request that this thread not turn into a scoring debate once some asshole scores the game a 9.2. That's a friendly request, not a mod request. =)

I'm not sure I like the grades, or if I like them better than the scores, but I agree with most of your feelings on this subject. For anyone who hasn't seen it, that was an abridged version of Evan's excellent editorial, available here: http://nintendoworldreport.com/editorialArt.cfm?artid=14623.

After Nine Different Reviews Brawl is holding up pretty well, 97 same as Super Mario Galaxy.

Metacritic is the only site I use now to get an idea of a game based on score alone.  Basically in Metacritic if you can get a 80 or above you have a good game, movie, book whatnot.

The power of Smash Bros is so great not even Gamespot can resist.

Gamespot gives Brawl a 9.5.

I would like the grades if they kept it simple. However, they did not. When every single grade can have either a plus or minus, you have essentially created a scale where you are judging out of 13(A +/-, B +/-, C +/-, D +/-, F), rather than a simple 5. Though, they did mention on the 1up podcast that a few people wanted a simple, Buy, Rent, Don't Buy scale. That would've been perfect.
