Smash Brothers Brawl is Melee 1.1
« on: March 04, 2008, 05:16:29 AM »
It has been confirmed here http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/review/R122293.html

You really all should stay away from Brawl because:

Quote
The Wi-Fi battle options are far from flawless: searching for players can take up to minutes (though there is a Sandbag you can perform your moves on to alleviate the waiting time); tedious friend code-entering is required to battle your friends (though this is a global complaint for Nintendo's Wi-Fi titles, not just Brawl); and there is sometimes a bit of lag during battle.

Or its pitiful modes:

Quote
This time, the only bonus level is Target Smash. Snag the Trophies, Race to the Finish, and Board the Platforms are nowhere to be seen, and the few Target Smash stages are now shared amongst all characters, instead of each character having his/her own unique stage as in 64 and Melee. The varied, sometimes wacky bonuses that appear upon clearing each stage in Melee (and whose collection led to unlocking the most prized trophy, the Diskun) have also been removed: one's score is now entirely dependent on the time remaining and damage dealt.

Quote
Simply put, many of the remixes, while arranged by famed composers, do not really do their originals justice. The fast-paced, cheery-sounding Ocarina of Time medley would have sounded out of place in the original game. The Song of Time in the medley lacks the ethereal, somewhat sorrowful mood within the Temple of Time. Saria's Song, which should evoke a melancholy feeling of a lost friend, is strikingly unfitting when played at such a fast tempo. .............. Nearly all of the music appears to be synthesized, not recorded by a live orchestra, as was the case in Super Mario Galaxy. Brawl's soundtrack is a prime example where nostalgia or quantity does not imply quality.

So in conclusion:

Quote
For those who wanted a Melee 1.1, that's great, but I'd rather have stuck to the original instead of shelling out another $50 for a limited upgrade.

Please be smart and skip out on Smash Brothers Brawl, instead get an overlooked gem like Escape form Bug Island which is fresh! Heck get it and Miami Nights for the price of Smash Brothers Brawl. 1+1=2 not 1.1

Old news, Crimm already filled us in.

Someone needs to tell gamerankings to start building in gamefaqs scores into their cumulative review score. How can I trust the cumulative score at game rankings when the most important reviews aren't even counted!?

I think it is a conspiracy to be honest. This poor gamefaqs reviewer isn't getting paid off, so his score doesn't matter.

Just to show I'm fair, here is a quote from a professionally written pro-Brawl review

Quote
What smash is all about really. This has been made bigger, better and just plain awesome. Pretty much every mode in the game has Co-Op modes but what stands out is the great as ever multi-player. Items to throw in for randomness if you please or a stock match in Final Destination with no items. Each is fun to watch, because no one match is ever the same. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get drunk and watch Jigglypuff get ripped apart. It's just FUN. And you'll NEVER get tired of it. Ever.

Overall, a Fantastic game and a worthy addition to the series. VERY fun and sure to be stuck in your Wii for a while. And even longer if you have friends.

FUN, NEVER, and VERY how can you go wrong?

I reckon it's a fun game, worth buying for sure and lots of fun.

I'm a bit disappointed, sure it's a new Smash Bros but all the new features are a bit too much.

This game is just mindblowing, I no longer have a mind.

Real fun until the 100th match where you know exactly what's going to happen.

The greatest piece of entertainment software on the planet.

A bit lacking in soul, has all the boxes ticked but isn't really that fun.

A worthwhile sequel, Nintendo's done it again.

Looks and plays the same as Melee. Don't let the bells and whistles fool you, keep your GameCube.

Anyone anywhere can say anything ever.

I actually agree with you Mario.

In Melee, when you got like a new character to challenge you it was REALLY EXCITING!

In Brawl, I play for an hour and then get a list of like 10 things I've unlocked.  Maybe there is just TOO MUCH STUFF.

Also, this game more than any other Wii game to date has me wishing it was in HD....

Obviously, it's still great though.

Why the carriage return between every single sentence?

It just doesn't make sense.

It is a waste of my web-space.

Your taking up like an extra .02 bytes when you do that.

It really doesn't make sense.

Hah I have no idea.

I think because i was in AIM chatting mode.

And that's a habit I picked up on there.

So that people can read what I'm writing...

without waiting for me to finish typing the whole damn thing.

Edit: I just realized Mario did it too.  heh.

This is your last warning now that Brawl is almost a day out.

Don't waste your time with this crappy slow game

Quote
Unfortunately, this is where the game really suffers, and truly turns Brawl into more of a “party game” than a “fighting game”.

To put it simply, the game is just too slow. It's the slowest game in the series, and makes no attempt to hide it. The quick, edge-of-your-seat action from Melee has all but vanished, as all characters now move slower and take longer to return to the ground. Final Smashes, a new sort of "super-move" for all characters, also suffer from this; while they're cool to watch at first, eventually you get so sick of how much they slow the pace of the game down that you'll be reluctant to even pick them up at all (as flashy as they may seem).

From what I've read, these change were done to encourage more mid-air combat – and while it certainly does help that aspect, it doesn't do much for the game in general. And when there is something wrong with the core physics of the game, you can't help but feel bad for the developers, who have otherwise poured so much time and effort into the other aspects of the game.

Speaking of which, there are many other elements of the game which help redeem its poor mechanics. There are a wealth of gameplay modes (both single and multiplayer) to enjoy, as well as tons of things to collect. Personally, I'm big fan of Nintendo history, and for me collecting all the various pieces of memorabilia was probably my favorite part. However, if that's not your thing, you can also try your hand at the various other gameplay modes such as Event Mode, Multi-Man Brawl, or heck, even design your own stage! There is truly is a lot of different things to do in this game - the question is, do you actually want to do them?

And horrendous replay value:

Quote
For a fighting game, this is where it really hurts. The core gameplay of Brawl just does not stand up to its predecessors, or most any game in the fighting genre. The physics changes make the game too predictable, and Final Smashes (Which admittedly are cool the first 15 or 20 times), slow the game down to a point where it's not even worth having them toggled on – which makes me question why they put so much effort into them in the first place.

Do NOT buy Mario Party 9 aka Smash Brothers Brawl:

Quote
Don't let the genre fool you – Super Smash Brothers Brawl is not a fighting game. It is a party game, through-and-through; surprisingly similar to Mario Party, in fact. However, just like MP, its appeal will wear off after about a week of playing, and it's really doubtful that you'll ever find yourself coming back to it except for big occasions or some such.

While Brawl is slower than Melee, there is no way in hell it's slower than Smash 64.
