what are we expecting out of wiiware
« on: February 29, 2008, 02:22:51 PM »
so there have been 3-4 games announced for wiiware so far.  and i was just wondering what people were expecting in the future.  personally i think this is a great platform for company's to test out new franchises on the wii without spending a butt load of money.

we keep hearing about how no one makes any money on the wii except for Nintendo, but this could be just the thing to kind of reinvent the wheel so to speak.  for instance we know that there are hard core games out there that cant find publishers because of the business model that most company's are taking with the wii.  and where as most of those projects are probably dead in the water this is a golden opportunity for a capcom, konami, take 2, etc, to put a small team together and make a game.  if it sells well that's all the proof they need to go ahead with a full project.  really if the cap is 40 megs then it can be done for ruffly the budget of a ds game.

just wondering what kind of games people want from wiiware.  as well as what you expect.

Capcom and Konami could get a kick in the nuts into making better titles if they feel threatened by the success of indie WiiWare titles.

Or they won't change at all, or they'll shove their own advertisement-backed CrapWare onto the service.

I expect a few quality games and not a ton of shovelware that makes Live Arcade look like God's gift to gaming.

I'm looking for independent games. I'm hoping the Wii is used as an outlet for independent PC games, where the Wii remote can be substituted for the mouse. From some of the bigger companies, I am hoping for new unique IPs that take some risks, do some crazy stuff and feel out the waters. I think if the barrier of entry is low enough for Wii Ware we can expect some reinvigoration of the game industry with some new unique ideas from nobody's that have no current affiliation with the industry.

yea see that's the thing this is going to be so cheep to do indie developers and small publishers can take the risk.  i understand that this probably will never be as good as xbox live arcade or any thing.  but with a unique controll scheme and the right idea the risk wont be as great as making a full fledged game.

i would also love to see something in the vein of an episodic rpg.  that would be pretty cool you know.  i love rpgs but sometimes 50 hours of game play can turn me off.  but on the other hand an episodic 10 hour rpg would be perfect.

i know I'm asking for something i will probably never get but at this time were still months away from the first game's to be released.

I expect that there will be a handful of games that are good and worthwhile that I won't be able download because I have no room :(

I'm not that pessimistic.  I think it'll be a lot of flash game ports.  I think you're on the right track though.

Yup.

Crap is inevitable. There's no way to avoid it. Nothing is sacred enough that it will avoid being hit by crap, and WiiWare is no exception.

Right now I expect the service to be very rock solid. Some of the showcased titles look very promising and far more unique than anything released on the Wii so far, like the Lost Winds game. Even stuff like Pokemon Ranch and pOp! could turn out to be very fun to play.

I thought Pokemon Ranch is supposed to be a pokemon box for Diamond and Pearl.

You know, at the right price this sounds like it could be entertaining.  Once again I don't see what the problem is, granted not everything on WiiWare is going to be a winner but damn stop dragging stuff through the mud before you ever get to see what something actually is.

Well, actually, I'm totally hyped for WiiWare. I mean, what games do we know about so far?

Final Fantasy: MLaaK
Pop!
Castle Defender
World of Goo
Major League Eating
Some unknown Telltale Games game
That austrian Medatronics game
Star Soldier R
Lost Wind
Dr. Mario
Pokemon Farm

...ummm... I'm gonna need to save up some more money.

But the way I see it, Wiiware will be a great place to be for a lot of more flash-type games and content, simply because of the economics. Some XBLA titles are big, but most probably gross only 200,000 or 300,000 I guess, so that's not enough for a big multi-person team, or loads of content. We should probably expect smaller game scopes, less game content on wiiware, hopefully balanced by innovative designs and mechanics that are larger than the sum of their parts.

You know what game would go great on WiiWare, by the way? A port/clone of The Incredible Machine. Oh yeah. So awesome. So simple yet so awesome.

I think Kairon just copied and pasted all the games coming out onto WiiWare. Most of those will probably be terrible, especially with little to no filtering to keep the crap out, it will be like the Wii garbage software times 1000.

You're such a troll GP! &P

Well, I'm prob gonna avoid the Nintendo titles. But I'm pretty much 100% sure that Castle Defender will be one of my most anticipated purchases.

I'm looking forward to the FF game, Lost Wind, and Castle Defender. If games like these come from WiiWare we should try to be a little optimistic here. Of course there is going to be crap games on there, there on crap games on discs and the VC too.

As a side note, I think when it launches there should be a seperate forum for WiiWare, so we can do seperate threads for each game, spread the word on good ones, and craptastic ones alike, discuss upcoming releases and so on. It's like the Wii had it's first natural baby. (obviously the VC was adopted)

I think you mean "Platchen" (or "Twist and Paint" if I am not mistaken). That's the one being made by the Austrian company. Also, when you say "Medatronics", I think you mean "Gravitronix".

And Golden, while I did say that there will be crap on WiiWare its unfair to say that ALL of it will be crap simply because they are being made by small, indie developers.

We should ALL just reserve our judgment till the said games are released. Up until then, no game is fantastic nor they are bad.

We'll see, so far I see a bunch of games that look like they are low-budget flash games. Beyond FF, I don't see anything that looks that good, and even FF may turn out to be average (Not to mention it didn't start out a WiiWare game).

I'm hoping for some japanese indie devs to go for the Wii instead of the PC. Of course, most of the games are just uninspired clones but I'd still rather see shmups and Megaman clones than bejewelled clones.

Whiich of the games are uninspired clones? Castle Defender looks completely reworked, and although I think Major League Eating looks stupid, I think we might be surprised by the controls. If done right the game could be fun, although I probably still wouldn't get it.

I'm not trying to hate, but you haven't played any of the games, don't be unreasonably pessimistic, at least say YOU THINK the games are uninspired clones, don't label them without playing them, or at least gathering more info, cuz both FF, and Lost Wind look like they could be amazing to me, with Castle Defender offering a good time wasting distraction.
