Wii Freeloader
« on: February 29, 2008, 09:01:40 AM »
The Freeloader is now available on Wii! Apparently it can be ordered online through Codejunkies official site (although I can't access the site for some reason). However as it is made by a UK based company I would assume that the freeloader disk itself is region locked to PAL. I also wonder how long it is until Nintendo renders the disk inoperable by way of a system update?  I would dearly love to get one as the GC version allowed me to play so many US/JPN games that I never would have considered otherwise and it is listed at around 10 pounds which is great value.

According to the site, it can be used on any-region system...

Yeah, I don't plan on picking one up until after we start hearing about system updates.  I have a feeling people are going to have to keep rebuying the thing until they just get sick of it.

Brawl should have a system update in it, albeit a minor one, so the first test should be when it's released.

I say Brawl's update is minor because it doesn't upgrade the firmware number of the Japanese console.

But if they're only $20 a pop, it's still worth it if you're really interested in import games.

Vook's revealed what Datel's plan is to make the Freeloader resistant to firmware upgrades their solution is: when a foreign disc is inserted it disables the console from being able to update its firmware. What about future firmware updates? Datel believe that it won't have any effect.

source also shows pictures of the freeloader box.

Does that mean the newer games don't actually rely on the firmware updates they install?

I bet they will make a SD card based patches to remedy future firmwares if it would block the actual disc program.

Apparently some neogaf users are contacting datel about what happens if a firmware update renders the freeloader useless, the response was they can get a free disc that will work with the new Wii firmware provided that the end user provides proof that they own the Wii Freeloader.

There really is no better solution though. Nintendo doesn't want PAL countries to play games, so it has to come from a third party source. The battle must be fought to be won.

The Gamecube freeloader saved my life.

Damn you Nintendo for blocking the GC freeloader out with the last update!!! SOBs...seriously.

I'm not really worried about disks not working and such, i trust that they have that sorted out by now.

The thing that worries me is data management

The cube had easily removable mem cards, I had a JPN one and a USA one, easy peasy.
But how the heck is this thing going to handle JPN/US/EUR saves on one internal flash card?

I dread overwriting of important saves, corrupt data and general save nastiness from this.

The GC freeloader let you save any savegames on the same memcard, I've got japanese, US and PAL saves on one card.

I do too but I had japanese save data on one of my memory cards and it did corrupt the data on that.  It might of just been a fluke though

I guess i will just continue my practice of buying an American Nintendo console to get the best of both worlds. It isn't only the retarded regions that turn me off from buying locally or at all, but the lack of price parity and useless release delays.

Nintendo, the DS shows you don't need regions.

works for ones who have modchips, so I'd assume it works with the freeloader as well.
