The Star Fox thread, as well as the great DK tunes on the Brawl soundtrack, had me thinking:
Is there a way to revive the Donky Kong series to its former glory?
The original arcade game was a huge hit and pretty much made Nintendo back in the day, but the sequels didnt make as big of an impact. Flash forward to Donkey Kong Country and DK is back on top with the likes of Mario (ok maybe not THAT big). The 'Country' series still gets praised today for what it achieved in its day, and even though the graphics are a debate to some when compared to today, the gameplay is always mentioned as solid. Whether single player or Co-op, the game is just damn fun.
Then what happens after the SNES? Donkey Kong 64 comes out, and although good in the graphics dept. the gameplay was lacking. Everyone cited it as "another Rare collect-a-thon." You might of had some fun with the game, I know I did, but there's no denying that the collecting was tedious. As for the GC, we never got a proper Donkey Kong game. Jungle Beat was close but the use of the Bongo's turned some people off, and/or just made it inaccessable for some who didnt want to get an accessory to play the game (properly).
With all the spin-offs and "gimmicky" games DK has under his necktie, and with all his "whoring out" within the Mario Spin-offs (See: Mario Party series, Sports series), it makes one think that Nintendo doesn't really respect the character/IP as much as they should. But what else can they do with the big ape? If we were to see another DK game on wii, a proper DK game, what could be done to the series make it feel new and grander, something to make us Nintendo fans (and video game fans in general) take notice?
Or is it a lost cause..?
