I've heard rumor that David Hayter asked Sakurai to add Alex Roivas to the playable roster, but even if that isn't a rumor, there's no guarantee he'd do it.

She'd make for a fantastic WTF character as I haven't seen her on nearly any of the prophet lists.

if she's not playable, she'd make a great assist.

I know this is weird, and a little early, but the possibility of Ray from Disaster Day of Crisis to appear? Even if his appearance is used to hype up his own IP coming later on?

Now that would be a brilliant choice. Alex is a pretty normal character... but through using various sanity effects she could be extremely unique and fun to play. I would love it if her Final Smash was something completely random (shifting effects) that really messed with everyone.

However, I doubt it will happen, given the game in question (which I don't think made any impact at all in Japan), but that sure is one of the more ingenious characters I have heard pitched.

I think Nintendo wants to forget about the whole Silicon Knights era.. if there's anything ED in Brawl, I'd be really happy.

With stevey's leak post we know that the starting roster is 21 (not counting Sheik, ZS Samus and the three P.Trainer Pokemon).

With the original hidden 4 being hidden again, we have 25.

With Sonic and Snake, we have 27.

Finally, with Lucario being confirmed we have a total of 28 known characters.

If the final number is going to be 35, that means we have 7 characters left to discover.

EDIT: The starting roster number has also doubled. Melee had 14 starters, Brawl will have 21.

Will they go for broke or keep it at a modest number?

One other thing, thinking about it the Mii might not make it in. Why? I think Nintendo wouldn't want gamers beating the crap out of caricature versions of other people.

Before anyone says anything, yes I know SSB has cute characters beating each other senseless, but these are fictional characters that hail from games where battle is common places.

The Miis, however, were made just so you could insert yourself into fun activities like sports, fitness and music.

Also, Nintendo DID remove the GB camera feature from Perfect Dark because they feared that people might accuse them of promoting violence.

So add those things and it makes the Mii an unlikely character.

Well this is also a Nintendo that allowed and even pursued Rockstar to release a game like Manhunt 2 on their system. The Nintendo from the N64 era is not the same as the one now.You may have a point about the Mii being used for sports/fitness though.

14 x 2 = 28

The starting roster has increased by 50%, it hasn't doubled.

What about Wii Boxing? The ass-kicking may not be as elaborate as it is in Smash, but it's still an ass kicking.

lol i agree with Adrock who beat me to it, Wii sports boxing is like actually kicking someone ass(or more or less punchings someones face), whereas Smash bros is just me kicking someones ass in a more creative way.

True, I forgot about that.

But the Mii is still out. Supposedly Sakurai is not going to use them in Brawl.

Sakurai
Of course, I think there was a possibility of taking Smash Bros. in a more casual-gaming direction. For example, we could make the art style simpler or make it possible to use Miis. However, with the various titles that the Wii was to offer, I felt that people were looking for something different. That’s the reason I decided in very early stages of development that the Wii pointer and motion movements would not be a primary feature of the game.

I don't think that's really ruling out the possibility of having Mii as an unlockable character. I just took his statement to mean that Miis wouldn't be used as a means to appeal to casual gamers (like they are in Mario & Sonic, for example). They won't be selectable from the start, or made a big deal of, because that'd be against the spirit of the game... But as a part of Nintendo history, I think it's still likely that Miis will appear in some form, and I'd say a playable character is a possibility. I trust Sakurai can see where the line is drawn between Mii as a feature and Mii as a sort of mascot in itself. He's clever like that.

I got sick of all the speculation and emailed my friend who works as a tester at NOA.  Guess what?  He took the last 3 months off, so he hasn't played Brawl at all!  He said it was the next game he would test, but he's working on a graphic novel, so he took a break.  What a bummer.

Kotaku just ran this story, thinking it is the final roster. Seems like a mockup of the list we saw posted here recently. The game trailers video it references clearly puts a ? on the screen denoting they are unsure, though Kotaku didn't seem to pick up on that, sigh.
