High Wii Demand Gives Nintendo Planning Problems

NOA can't think ahead if it's always worrying about getting consoles out as fast as possible.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime says that his company is having difficulty laying out a game plan for the coming months because of the record-breaking demand of the Wii.

"The level of demand we are facing complicates all of our future business planning," said Reggie in an interview with Reuters.  Until supply and demand balance each other out, he said, "all of that becomes a much tougher exercise."

Though it's not contributing to Nintendo's plight as directly as the Wii, the Nintendo DS is also causing Nintendo a few minor supply issues.  Reggie noted that "some retailers" were "voicing concerns about DS inventory" as the holiday period went on.

Reggie later commented on the retailer practice of offering the Wii console in a multi-game bundle, something he frowns upon.  "Retailers have already been given feedback that we are not big fans of that," he said.  "We think it masks some of the price advantage we have versus our competition and, frankly, the consumer should decide what they want."

When asked if Nintendo would threaten bundling retailers with fewer Wii shipments, Reggie made his position clear.  "We don't have to remind retailers of the strength we have right now," he said.  "We are simply making an observation and that reinforces our point quite nicely with retailers."

Remember in Bad Boys 2 where the drug czar had a problem of rats chewing on his stacks of money because he had too much cash to launder? He said "This is a stupid problem to have!" This Nintendo problem is kinda like that.

To quote Romeo Crennel, this is a good problem to have. Would they rather they be back in the GameCube days when the total lack of demand was what screwed with their plans?

Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

@ Crimm: Wow, I always thought it was a worm.

I wonder why Nintendo doesn't build their own factory for the parts that are causing their shortage of supply.
