The only thing that looks different to me (post-leopard upgrade) is the spacing of the forums on the front page.

Font seems to be the same as before.

Yeah, I've discovered it's just me.  For some reason my MacBook Pro erased almost all the fonts (including Arial of all things) and won't insteall new ones.

Macs suck.

Translation: I broke my Mac zoinks!

But seriously, what do you mean won't install? You should be able to just drag new fonts into the fonts folder in your home library folder.

No, no, it won't insteall them.  That's an entirely different matter.  We need a programmer, stat!  Create a function called "Insteall" and send it to Pale's command prompt or whatever it is Mac's base their operating systems on!  Someone must save Pale's Mac, or else he'll be stuck with Mr. Saturn font forever, KaY-o?

Well it's a Mac, so it probably deleted Arial because it was created by the evil Microsoft as a ripoff of Helvetica in order to not have to pay royalties for Helvetica. My MacBook Pro did no such thing, so it was probably your fault. Try to get them off the OS X Install disc and hope you don't need to reinstall the OS because that takes forever and does a few annoying things.

Drag into the library? I just double click the .ttf file and click install font when it opens.

hah, this thread is still going?

Yeah, I have no idea what caused the issue.  But apparently the fonts were all still there, just marked as root only in permissions.  Therefore installing over them didn't work because they were already there.

I had to fix all the permissions.  I do love working on OSX, but all this "it doesn't have issues like windows" talk is still total bonk.

For Pale, to take solace in the fact that his problems are minor in the grand scheme of things:

I always feel bad for people who have upgrade problems. I guess I am "one of the lucky ones" and never ever had an issue upgrading OS X.

I've always done the standard "upgrade now" option. Never archive and install or a clean install regardless of what people recommend and nothing has gone wrong.

OS X 10.0 -> 10.1 -> 10.2 -> 10.3 on my iMac G4 then did a fireware transfer to my (then new) Power Mac G5 which then went trough an upgrade to 10.4 -> 10.5.

The moral of the story is, sh*t happens, it's technology and as good as any company can be I don't think any OS software has ever gone through a major upgrade with no issues across the board.

With that said, if anyone ever has fears of upgrading their OS on the Mac platform just wait till the first patch is released for said upgrade. Usually all the major kinks are worked out then.

For every story like that there are hundreds and hundreds of people who upgraded with no problem and proceeded to complain endlessly about Stacks. With something as complex as a modern computer OS problems will happen from time to time. No operating system is perfect, not even one from Apple. As someone who regularly uses both Windows and OS X I vastly prefer the Mac. Sure it has problems, and it even really screws things up from time to time, but 99% of the time my biggest problem is that Quicksilver (one of the most useful free apps ever) unexpectedly quits often enough to be annoying, and that means less time trying to fix problems and more time doing what I want to do (which usually turns out to be nothing and I get bored. Maybe I should be hoping for more problems to give me something to do.)

EDIT: Yeah, what Mashiro said. He may not have very good taste in games, but he's right about this. In fact I'm taking his advice that he didn't follow himself, I'm waiting until 10.5.1 (coming real soon if Apple seeding a bug-free build to developers means what it usually does) or 10.5.2 before upgrading my MBP to Leopard.

Meh, there's another Service Pack for XP coming out next year (details here). Not sure how interested MS are in supporting XP beyond security fixes after that , but I guess it will depend largely on the improvements in Vista SP1 (a nice reference on what to expect).

Of course, but the user can do a lot to protect themselves from upgrade troubles. I still recommend a clean install no matter what OS you use for three reasons:

  • It encourages the user to make a backup of their stuff without relying on the OS - getting a USB hard drive even if they only use it occasionally makes life easier when (not if) things go bunk.

  • Windows and OS X do not automagically upgrade software already installed to the latest versions when you upgrade - a clean install is a good prompt for the user to do this. And for that matter, neither Windows or OSX can claim to do a good job of software management when I can "update" my Linux distro and it actually finds all new updates for packages installed on my system. Sure, Windows support Microsoft product updates and Apple support first-party application updates (correct me if I'm wrong) but until either one gets to a point where I can update all software on a system, Linux does it better. Sit down, fanboys.
Self-updating third-party applications are fine in the short-term, but a real management tool should work on a holistic level - including resolving dependencies between applications.

  • I don't trust upgrading tools to do their job. If they don't clean up files which are no longer required, then they are leaving garbage behind. If they install unnecessary components then they're filling up my hard drive with garbage. I don't expect them to be able to handle every third-party application and every single piece of hardware under the sun, so why should I expect my configuration of hardware and software to work?

In short, it may take less time, but there's no clear evidence that upgrades are able to keep the operating system in an optimal state.

How dare the vocal minority be so vocal! Let's stop striving for perfection because there's only X people who had problems. Let's pat ourselves on the back and go home early today because there are also Y people who had no problems. And in this case Y > X! Those X people are on their own!

Jesus, its not about the numbers, its about the problems encountered. Problems like hard drives not being detected or entire filesystems disappearing are dealbreakers, even if it is only for one person.

stacks are a stupid idea, and an excuse for people to be even lazier

I'm a rotten liar: I updated to 10.4.11 roughly 20 minutes after I wrote that post.

Anything to get the Safari beta to stop crashing my laptop after waking from sleep mode.

That said, I really WON'T be buying Leopard until I have a reason to.
