The Simpsons Game
« on: October 31, 2007, 06:04:25 PM »
I played around an hour of the game tonight. I have to say straight-away that I'm disappointed.

First thing you notice when you take control of Homer: The graphics should be better. Characters look like scribbles at times. The backgrounds look pretty good though. After about 5 seconds of playing, you'll notice how bad the camera is. It doesn't get any better as things progress either. Control is not very tight, so you'll be missing easy jumps a lot, especially when you're Bart. Prepare for pain on Stage 2! :-(

As for the good well... things are tied really closely to the show. Fans should really enjoy it for that alone. The dialog is great. Funny quips are constant when fighting, etc. The cinema scenes look better than a TV clip.

Oh, the Wii special stuff... haven't seen much that's special so far. One special move involves pulling both Wiimote+chuk towards you. It's over-complicated for a move that is basically your area affect move when fighting. The Wii minigames have been nothing exciting yet either.

I'll try to post more as I progress, but my gut feeling is to give this one a rent before you buy.

Never played the game, but in pictures the humor looks like it falls a little flat at times.  "God of Wharf?"

I played the demo of the 360 version and I agree. I was bored out of my mind and got annoyed at fighting the same enemies over and over again.

I played the demo for the 360 and it was alright.  The HD "pop" of the colors looked really good, and I had a decent time, but I don't think I liked it enough to pay full price for it.

I would say a rent and decide for yourself.

I haven't gotten a chance to play the final version (I own it for 360) but I've heard good things about it. Yeah the camera is a pain but like the demo you can get used to it (Besides I heard that demo battle was NOT a good one to get people accustomed to the game).

The irony there is that Krusty is renown for being an untrustworthy character.

Any word on the Ds version somehow I think that will be the star of the bunch.  I remember early impressions stating that the Ds version was almost a must buy because of pet Homer.

I have the DS version as well, I'll play it later tonight.

The commercial was great. Homer continually walking in the wall was hilarious. I'll rent this as soon as I can.

Just a quick observation, it looks like Lard Lad lost a lot of facial animation in the Wii version, its gone toward this green-eyed, emotionless walking beast.

Oh well, the game still looks nice, but I'm pretty sure its not going to look nearly as good as the 360 version, although I dont think I've seen any lag in the game, either that or its very rare.

Well I played the game for a few hours last night and it is ALOT of fun, not to mention it has diversity galore. The visuals are stunning (Though I am playing it on the 360), with an all around great experience. I think people should at least rent the game, ESPECIALLY if they are a Simpsons fan considering the writing is top notch.

So is this a case of "sucky demo=good full game" syndrome at work?

I'll give it a rent sometime, but I am still not sure. The trailers make it look like you fight with the same enemies over and over again and the gameplay isn't that varied.

That is patently false, you have everything from Pikmin esque gameplay, to Black & White "god" modes, puzzle solving, and more. Not to mention it has some hilarious parodies (it even parodies Mario in a couple segments).

In that case, I blame the trailers. Many of them featured repetitive beat ém up levels in which you fought the same enemies over and over again.

I'll take your word for it and rent it when I can.

Yeah I recall the trailers, there is beat em up but it is rarer than the trailers make it out to be. It really looks like EA made a poor choice in their demo and game commercials, but they are not good examples of what the game is like. Yeah it has beat em up, yeah it has a wonky camera at times, but there is also quite a bit of variety as well, along with some neat homages in both parody style along with gameplay.

The DS version is mildly fun until it gets irritating. The relatively good cutscenes make me want to try the console versions.

Played a couple more hours and this game is tons of fun, though I think I am nearing the end. The humor is some of the best I've seen in a game, and it is varied enough to where things don't get stale. To put the demo in perspective, when I fought that boss again I HATED it like the first time, it felt overly clunky especially compared to the other relatively innovative boss fights.

I noticed the Wii version changed the Sparklemon battles into movies. The 360 version lets you play it out.

Thanks EA, cop outs...

Beat the game, and wow what a ride. While the gameplay may be flawed the experience kept me glued to the television. Even the final boss fight was a hilarious parody, though I don't want to say what TYPE of game it parodied. Anyway I think the game is at least a rental for someone, though it is pretty short (I clocked in at 7:40 minutes and that was including times where I left it paused to do something else so it probably was more like 6hr 30-7hrs)

I was reading a bit more about the Wii version, and it appears EA cut a TON of stuff for it. THey shortened many of the levels and axed free roam Springfield from the final version (you go to all the levels from the Simpson's house in the Wii version)!
