New Wii Feature to Allow Virtual Console Gifting
« on: October 29, 2007, 08:16:30 PM »
Soon, we'll be able to give the gift of classic gaming.  Also, Wii production has increased to 1.8 million per month.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=14710

The Associated Press is reporting that Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has announced a new feature of the Wii that will allow consumers to purchase Virtual Console games and then send them to friends over the Internet.

Details are sparse, but apparently users who receive and accept a game gift will have the Wii Shop Channel on their console open automatically, at which time the game will start downloading.  Iwata did not mention a time frame for the service to begin.

"We think this will be a breakthrough in encouraging customers to spread news of fun games [by] word of mouth," Iwata said.  He went on to say that Nintendo hopes this new feature will encourage more Wii owners to connect to the Internet, something Nintendo has stated before that it is aggressively pursuing.

In the same AP article, Iwata remarked that Nintendo has increased Wii production to 1.8 million consoles worldwide per month.  There's no word on how the hardware would be distributed regionally, but it's certain that given the Wii's current popularity level, it's still going to be a hard-to-find item in all territories.

Swapping games between friends is something I'd definitely be down for.

Yeah, I wouldn't hold your breath.  I'm guessing it's more like: go to the shopping channel, click buy this game for friend, they get a wii message and download it.

Yeah, once you buy a game, it's forever linked your console.

What they're saying, is you can buy a game for a friend (a game which will be forever linked to their console).

The Funhouse needs to do a Secret Santa thing.

Can I get a Hell Yeah?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I really doubt your identity will be kept a secret when you buy a game for somebody.

Well, not secret secret.

More like everyone puts their name into a hat (i.e. PM it to the coordinator) and they get assigned to someone else participating.  Then in a thread they list:

1) a few games/genres they really enjoy
2) games they already own
3) anything they're definitely not interested in

Then their Secret Santa puts some thought into it (hopefully) and sends them a game they (should) really like.  I like it because it gives you the opportunity to play something you wouldn't normally pick up.  It would also stir up some good conversations in the Funhouse.  Besides, it's only $5 (if NES games are chosen) so it's not like you're risking a whole lot.

Lol I was speaking in general. I would think Nintendo would notify you if a person already has a game.

I wouldn't be surprised if they limit you to buying for friends in your region.

I hope that they don't charge you until the receiver actually downloads the game. I'd hate to spend 10 bucks on something and have it just sit there, undownloaded and unplayed.

Nintendo doesn't want its games intermingling with other countries.
